What QB Competition?

Even Steve Sarkisian seemed to pour water on the idea of a quarterback derby today after the Coliseum scrimmage.

“Max (Browne) is improving as well if not at the rapid pace of Cody (Kessler) so far,” Sarkisian said.

Sorry for no qb controversy or indeterminate coaches comments Wolf you sorry loser

    • Helen

In some ways I wish there was a controversy as it might focus Scottie on USC and not have his mind wonder over to Kiffinville.

Have they stopped with the subscription policy on the OCR USC blog? I was able to read the USC articles without any subscription. Anybody have any idea?

    • Helen

I believe it is back open. It seemed to be open on some days and so I would occasionally try and jump over there, but I stopped for the longest time. The last month or so it has been open every time I went there so I think they’ve learned no eyeballs means no advertising revenue.

What did you think about the Bruin basketball season?

          • ThaiMex

Every Year you can count on the usual outstanding schools (Duke, N.C., Villanova, UConn, Kansas, Az, UCLA, etc.) to make an appearance in the BIG DANCE. Some things NEVER change….like So So Cal finishing at the bottom of the conference and hosting the Kids Choice awards. Congrats though, on that ONE NCAA Banner hanging in your gym…..the one that say’s “NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT PARTICIPANT”. Recruits must love it and take notice!

Doesn’t “pouring water” imply that one is minimizing or reducing a conflagration, which in this case is a metaphor for the QB competition? Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to say that Sark is “pouring fuel” on the idea of quarterback derby? Then again, Gargamel is only a hack reporter for a fourth rate newspaper, so maybe the subtleties are beyond him.

Wolf really skewed the quote by Sarkisian. Sarkisian really said that Browne, while improving, is not doing so at nearly the same pace as Kessler. Something along those lines.

      • ScottWolfSniffsHisOwnFarts

Thanks. So, Gargamel’s entire blog post is misleading? Why am I not surprised?

        • Helen

Scottie’s posts are either misleading, irrelevant, personal attacks or manufactured. And he was the one pushing the idea of a QB controversy just a couple days ago.

QB Blake Bortles of U. Central Florida may the first player picked in the upcoming NFL draft. Here is comparison of Bortles’ first full year and Cody Kessler’s first full year (which was suppressed by first half of season in the Kiffin fiasco):

QB Blake Bortles may be the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Below is a data comparison of Bortles first full year stats and the same for Cody Kessler (first half of last season was less productive because of the Kiffin Caper):

Max must really be awful if he can’t pick up a limited playbook! 5 Star Bust On!

The good news about Kessler is that he says he worked hard on his arm strength during the off-season, and that Sark is coaching him to throw earlier after the snap, apparently with some success, and with Sark’s expectation of further success. I have been highly critical of Kessler’s arm strength and throwing late. Players improve, if they work hard and fortune smiles on them.

A truth about the QB competition is that one would expect Kessler to show better in the early practices–HE was the starter. Would one expect Kessler to learn faster? That, I don’t know. Regardless, everyone has his own learning curve.

Logic suggests that the longer the competition proceeds, with Browne getting his share of reps, the fairer the competition is to Browne. It’s up to Browne to shift the “learning ratio” in his favor, and/or to demonstrate qualities that Kessler does not have. I think that Browne, as the RS freshman, deserves a generous amount of time to do that (Kessler, after all, did not play stellar last year, especially in evenly-matched games). If given a generous time period, Browne has to close that learning gap, or he has no fair claim to start.

So far as Scott Wolf, I agree with another commenter here that Sark is fueling the competition. He served notice on Browne that he needs to learn more, if he wants to be “in the hunt” to start. That’s something Browne needs to take to heart.
