What Is A Scholarship Offer Worth?

Lane Kiffin said last summer he did not celebrate anymore when a recruit committed because a commitment was often meaningless in today’s flip-flopping world of high school recruiting.

The same might start being said of a scholarship offer. USC’s offered 68 players so far for next year. Does that mean they want those players? Maybe. But how many are just being offered as a fallback in case someone else doesn’t commit.

Or worse, if a three-star committed today, would he be jettisoned later if the four-star wants to come? Of course. So an offer is great moment for a recruit, it just doesn’t guarantee a scholarship . . . anymore.

  1. Aaah, what’s a day without Kiffin mentioned in it?– Totally empty, spiritless and without pity.

Anyway, so this is the modern day way of recruiting– don’t believe anything the establishment i.e. college coaches, say to you, and certainly don’t rely on teenagers’ promises.

The world is getting away from us. But don’t worry, nature will outlast humans because the earth does not need people

  2. By comparison, Notre Dame has offers out to 95 recruits.

How many are offered as a fallback in case someone doesn’t commit? Well the answers is pretty easy: 68 – 25 = 43.

Shirley you’re not suggesting that USC only offer 25 scholarships and that this is the honorable thing to do?

  3. And you’re still nothing more than a petty, sniveling barrow, Smeagol-Wolf…

  4. Wolf, I’m surprised that you haven’t posted anything regarding some upcoming changes that Sark and Haden are discussing that will affect the football program. I first heard about possible programmatic changes yesterday over drinks with two of my business associates who are close to Heritage Hall. You haven’t even posted anything this evening, like you usually do on Sunday nights. I might be able to get more info from one of my contacts tomorrow, and I’ll be sure to post.

So far, Sark has been fairly free of controversy and bad decision-making. Let’s hope he keeps it that way.

    • We all know your “inside info” is worthless, nice try!

Plus, eavesdropping on someone while there visiting the shitter at Heritage Hall is creepy

      PS…..Your nose is growing…haha!!!

    • We know your inside info is always worthless, nice try.

PS…Quit deleting my posts. The truth hurts!

  5. Better reporting would be to explain what it is typical – for example, if you have 25 spots open, does a team typically offer 30? 40? 50? Isn’t it much like inviting people to a wedding? You plan for 30% ‘No” responses. Suggesting SC is doing something “wrong” here is a little pollyannaish, Scottie.

  6. Anybody going to politely tell Sarkisian it appears impolite to do video interviews with his sunglasses on? Or does he also have the incurable Redondo Beach syndrome? Whatever else Sarkisian is or is not, he appears to be a nice guy. You can’t be a totally nice guy to everybody and be head coach. But he needs to come across to his fan base as a nice guy. He needs to humanize himself unless he wants to be perceived to be robo-coach. Lane Kiffen had an insecurity complex which expressed itself in arrogance and cockiness and in which he underestimated his players. I wouldn’t say Sarkisian has either (but you do have a game face when you hit the playing field). The families of the players he recruits get to see him in a more personable light. It’s tough doing interview with a press corps wanting an errant phrase to seize upon for a story. But Sarkisian might make it easier on himself if he tried keeping the sun glasses off. Sure there are other things more important such as his repetition coaching style and delegating to assistants which he reportedly does an excellent job at. Fight on Sark!

  7. Soundslike a desperate program to me. Stock in USC football has obviously plummeted.
