USC Morning Buzz: The Plot Thickens Over Why An Offensive Player Is No. 55

There seems to be no logical reason for an offensive player to wear No. 55, the most-hallowed number in his USC history and reserved for a top linebacker. But now we have conflicting reasons for how offensive lineman Toa Lobendahn is now No. 55.

“I asked for No. 54 but they just gave (55) to me,” Lobendahn said. “If (Steve Sarkisian) was to give me another number I’d wear it too.”

One problem: There is no No. 54 on the team.

Earlier in the spring, Sarkisian said Lobendahn was promised No. 55 by Lane Kiffin: “It was something that came up in conversation with the previous staff and it was the right thing to do. Somebody has to wear some numbers.”

Gotta sell the fishwrap – thicken that plot, Scottie.

  • Sarknado

So Scott, Lobendahn wore 55 in high school. Why would he ask for 54?

  • Gollum-Wolf

Try thickening the hair on your empty head, Gar ga mel…

  • Internal Monologue

Do all roads really lead to Lane Kiffin? This “story” has as much legs as Scottie’s story that Kiffin ordered the game footballs to be deflated.

    • that “story” helped run Kiff outta town, Jack.

Kiff started the fight, and the wolfman calmly locked the door and did a Kenny Rodgers job on him…

      • Internal Monologue

Scott, you had absolutely no influence on Kiffin loosing his job. Wake up and smell the puss. Kiffin did a poor job of coaching under difficult times and lost his job for that reason. The only thing that was clear was your lack of professional journalism skills by repeatedly saying Kiffin was responsible for the balls being deflated.

        • and lying about his coaches Poll vote, and trying to set me up and the Number switching shenanigans etc etc etc

but his ultimate undoing was trying to ban the wolfman from practice. blew up in his face and he never recovered. Lost the next game (Stanford) and kept losing….

          • Internal Monologue

Booting you from practice was Kiffin’s crowning achievement of his tenure and was a slap in your face… but no, that was not his undoing. Football is about winning not about putting up with media with a vendetta.

You and the rest of the media totally blew it by not investigating the coaches poll controversy. You took it on face value that Kiffin lied, but the reality was Kiffin was telling the truth. How can that be you might ask? Kiffin did not vote USC #1 because he, like all other coaches in the poll, did not fill out the poll. They all have some underling fill it out and Kiffin never knew that the underling voted USC #1. The great story was never revealed that the coaches poll is a joke because none of the coaches assess the other teams each week and submit their own opinion in the poll. Kiffin almost blew it and accidentally reveal the coaches poll has no credibility. With a little work you could have uncovered the real story and made national headlines.

          • And they call me boring…

          • Jethro G Sabbath

            Not boring but incredibly repetitive

          • ThaiMex

Funny how you mention the word “BORING”…and You Know who shows up…(to take CREDIT).
            fit Un!

          • Yeah and I see the wise Moderator Deleted Comrade for being boring!!

            Surgery sweeeeet!!

          • Jethro G Sabbath

I think 50-0 might have topped that.

          • Helen

Scottie: you slipped up and fell out of your faux persona by stating “… and trying to set me up…” Nobody tried to setup Charlie Bucket.

          • WESTWOOD ROB

Or is that what Bucket wants you to think?

          • Not even the great Charlie Bucket is that clever and devious. To pull off such sublime duplicity, Bucket would have to rely on the assumption his every word is being parsed and analyzed by a fanatical fringe group and then couch the phraseology in a rushed defensive manner to give the illusion of a master mind momentarily letting his guard down and revealing his ultimate deception….I’m good, but I’m not THAT good.

          • WESTWOOD ROB

Or have you begun to identify with the Wolfman a little TOO much?

          • I….don’t think so….

          • marvgoux1

There are more twists and turns in this Bucket character than a Hitchcock movie!

          • Easy, that was just an innocent typo, you guys got me all confused with all this jibber jabber!!

          • Helen

Funny, you always make “innocent typos” during your posts as Scottie.

      • ThaiMex

“you coulda heard a pin drop”

  • UCLA Dynasty

I didn’t even go to that school and know that 55 is not “the most hallowed number in SCCC history.”

  • UCLA Dynasty

Not to mention a defensive player could also have that number at the same time. That’s an SCCC journalism degree for ya.

  • Internal Monologue

    “It’s just a number” – Toa Lobendahn.

  • So Sarkiffin thinks he can fool the wolfman???

Pshaw!! Like Kiff, this guy is WAY out of his depth trying to play checkers against the 3D Chess Master!!

this is gonna be fun! Wolfman gonna TEAR YOU UP, yo!!

Wolfman, are you turning into a… “55 Truther”?

  • Bestlakersfan

You pathetic, bald turd. Leave the 17 year-old kid alone.

    • Flagged

      • Cheap seats

You really shouldn’t let comments about you affect your confidence. It goes with the territory of journalism.

Wang uses his real name in the forums. Why don’t you, Scott?

  • ScottWolfSniffsHisOwnFarts

You really suck at your job, G argamel.

    • Jethro G Sabbath

Is the G-word not allowed or is that just an inadvertent space?

      • ScottWolfSniffsHisOwnFarts

        Not allowed.

  • Ken Hart

Did you really say, “The plot thickens?” So pathetic aren’t you Wolf?

    • your eyebrows are pathetic.

      • Jethro G Sabbath

        Classy cadre?

        • you never stick up for the wolfman, but i say one thing about Pilot Light Checking Guy and you jump all up in my grill…..go figure.

          • Jethro G Sabbath

As far as I know, Wolf never called himself classy.

          • Jethro G Sabbath

I guess the moderator didn’t think it was too classy

          • ok Col Jessup, just one more question:
if, as you claim, i’m the wolfman, and the wolfman runs the blog….then why are my comments routinely deleted?

i’d like an answer to my question…

          • Jethro G Sabbath

            I never made that claim.
I do find the thought amusing, though.
