UC Irvine Coach Mike Gillespie One Win From College Baseball World Series

UC Irvine defeated host Oklahoma State, 8-4, in the first game of their Super Regional series. If the Anteaters win one more game, they go to the College World Series in Omaha. And it would mean another trip to Omaha for Coach Mike Gillespie, who led USC to a national title in 1998.

Maybe if UC Irvine goes to Omaha, Mike Garrett can drive up from Langston University in Oklahoma and apologize for firing him.

  1. Thanks for pointing that out Scotty. I was having a scotch tonight and wondering what happen to Mike. To bad he could not even clear the 500 mark the last 4 years at USC.

    • I was having a whiskey and was wondering why USC hasn’t been to the postseason since Mike left…too bad Mike Gillespie took USC to Omaha four times and won the national title in 1998….too bad Timmmayyyyy…and how has your baseball program done since then?

      • I’m looking at it this way. The team made HUGE strides this year, and its looking up and up! FIGHT ON!

  2. wolfman, you are truly the Keyser Soze of the sports world!!!

If someone disses you, you not only run them outta town, you then follow them to the new town and CONTINUE to crotch kick them into submission!!!

Oklahoma, Alabama, King’s Landing…they got no where to hide once you they get on your “list”!!!

You are the most RUTHLESS VATO in town, wolfman!!!

  3. that’s funny since I know people at UCI who believe he is one of the best people around…I guess you hang out with the wrong people

  4. Clever post, Wolfman, particularly not mentioning what Gillespie did in the subsequent years. And you mentioning Omaha sent a thrill down my leg thinking of that truck stop we’ve visited…

    • how has USC baseball done since Gillespie left?…how clever…but then again you pound your chest over the many tennis and golf national titles USC has won since he left, right?

      • Don’t you know who I am? I am Scott’s biggest shill on this blog. I’m complimenting the Wolfman for giving what his detractors would say is a one-sided view of Gillespie’s tenure to merely stoke the fire of his naysayers.

        • I guess you don’t know who I am…I’m making the naysayers get angry because the coach they hated the past few years is one win away from going to Omaha…a place USC won’t be going to anytime soon…

        • We all know you are Golly-Nerd, idiot rah rah Kiffin lover and the perennial loser at the Best Star Wars Costume Contest at Comic Con Conventions from here to Bangor, Maine.

    • Golly-Nerd had a thrill down his leg thinking of the possibilities at the “When Nerds Attack” Comic Con Convention next month in San Diego!

  5. I’d like to trade 5 of Scott’s posts for 1 Taliban sympathizer

    • Lets continue complaining about a decision an AD that is not longer with the program made almost 10 yrs ago..
that how we keep readers up to date on this BLOG!
      Wolf is a CLOWN!

  6. Irvine took the lead yesterday scoring two runs on an infield single! I love watching Gillespie ball. The professionals know how good he is:

Scout One: “Coach Gillespie’s WAR is like 16. He’s worth 16 wins per year. He’s the highest on the West Coast—that’s a no-brainer. I would challenge any other coach in the country to take the team he had and bring them to a super regional. A double squeeze (against Oregon State)? I haven’t seen that since high school. I didn’t even know people practiced that anymore. But it’s great, he gets his guys to understand who they are.”

Mike Garrett destroyed the USC baseball program because he couldn’t stand having a coach who didn’t bow to him. Langston College is far too good for him.

  7. I guess it’s another slow USC news day (aka “You mean I have to get off the sofa and work for a story?”)?

  8. No doubt Gillespie’s overall body of work at SC was great- 1 National title, 4 CWS, and lots of post season play. But 3 of his last 4 years were horrible, and it was time to make a move- Gillespie had gotten stale and both sides needed a change. Too bad Garrett replaced him with Chad Krueter, the only coach alive worse than Lane Kiffin. This is another example of a Wolf “man crush”

  9. It’s truly odd for a professional reporter to troll the subject for which he is assigned to cover. Most reporters are content with making their point and then moving onto the next topic. I guess the benefit of Scott’s approach is that he doesn’t need to engage in the time-consuming approach of actually reporting news.

    • It’s truly odd for someone like you that detests this blog to spend so much time on it. Most dissatisfied readers would go elsewhere. I guess you are obsessed with Scott.

  10. Mike Garrett and Lane Kiffin are better at their jobs than Scott Wolf is at his.

    • What a bunch of malarkey…the Wolfman’s nearly 30 years at the DN speaks for itself.

      • Golly-Nerds’ 10 straight years of losing at Comic Con Convention Best Costume Contests speaks for itself.
