USC Saturday Buzz: Nelson Agholor Emerging As Consensus All-American

USC wide receiver Nelson Agholor’s made two preseason first-team All-American teams (Sporting News, Phil Steele) and will probably be on more before the season starts. He certainly has the potential. But these evaluations seem to be made more on what-could-be this season than what happened last year.

Agholor’s admitted he needs to be more consistent. Last year, he dropped too many passes or too often complained to referees about pass interference on unsuccessful plays. Those areas need to change if he is to make post-season All-American teams. (Photos by Beverly Pham)

I guess that’s why they call it the 2014-2015 All-American team – cuz it’s based on how they are expected to perform during the upcoming season and not last year.

    • Ted

Pre-season all american can only be based on last years performance. By your logic no one can be an all american because 2014-15 has not happened yet.

      • Ben Factor

Ted, you make a very compelling argument.

If Scott is surprised with Agholor’s preseason acclaim, so am I. Maybe I’m just jaded by the sophomore year accomplishments of his two predecessors at #1 USC WR.

I have liked Agholor from the moment I saw his high character in his TV commitment to USC. May he exceed every expectation!

      • Helen

Pre-season rankings are not based on previous years – it is an expected outcome for the upcoming year. Sure the player’s past performance is factored in, but the award is for the the upcoming year. There have been incoming freshman on pre-season All-American lists and they have no previous college experience.

        • Ted

Up coming years projections that is based on past performance! Namely the year before…

    • B.Miller

Instead of stating what Agholor did NOT do last year, how about mentioning some facts.. Wolf said based off his potential.. What were his numbers last year? Wolf said he dropped to many balls.. How many balls did he drop?
Sounds like more complaining that the kids is on the All American team..

  • NotAFanOfYou

Nelson is going to make WolfPutz look like a fool with those comments. Then again WolfPutz is already a fool.

Hope he lives up to the hype as a receiver and returner.

    • Helen

Even though Agholor could be an All-American returner, my guess is Sark will have him focus on receiver and not risk injuries. We have many capable returners (Farmer, Mitchell, Jackson, Cravens…) but only one true start receiver returning. Plus throwing Jackson in on special teams is a nice bone for him.

Could not agree more, but I won’t be surprised if it doesn’t unfold that way.

What’s a good message board that we don’t have to pay for?

Hey, go piinch yourself succa, when was the last time a ruin was AA at wide receiver? That is what I thought, you donl’t know and it was last century.

            OK, so what’s your point?

          • TrojanFan3.0

Ruins have had marginal talent at WR or perhaps it’s been more of a QB issue

          • gotroy22

True they haven’t had a NFL caliber quarterback since Matt Moore transferred to Oregon State.
