The PR Benefit Of 4-Year Scholarships

USC made a splash today with its announcment of four-year scholarships in revenue sports. Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Illinois and Nebraska started giving out four-year scholarships in football in 2012.

But they didn’t advertise it. So for many fans, it might seem like USC is doing something ahead of the curve, which will bring it good public relations today.

  1. Per your post Scott I saw no mention of those Big 10 schools offering mens/womens basketball scholarships – in this instance USC is ahead of the curve in that vein.

    • What is with these coherent posts in understandable english? Where did the Trotsky-speak go?

  2. In my day, all football players and some baseball players all got four year scholarships. When did it change to one year?

        • UCLA has no BCS bowl victories. BCS Bowl victories are obsolete Caster Oil, and they mean nothing since BCS games were nothing more than showcase games with TV money being the ultimate object, instead of FB NC tournament.

For now, UCLA will settle for owning LA Football. I won’t bother to review SUCC meager Basketball program success.

          • Thanks for coming by and showing your envy for all things USC. Lets give her an 8 clap and towel wave.

          • I have to give you props on the handle, “UCLA Owns LA Football” is a great way to bait people into some trash talking, haha I get it.. Even though I highly I doubt its something you really believe to be true.

But hey, when I’m bored I’ll play along!

          • Acknowledging and agreeing with are two different things. What I acknowledged is that your mindset makes no sense. I’m not even going to bother asking you how or why you’d believe UCLA would own football in LA because you yourself probably wouldn’t be able to answer that. You’ll most likely take the cheap & easy way out and say “well they won the last 2 years” so ok if that’s your definition of “owning football in LA” then sure whatever helps you sleep at night.
I’m fine with USC having more National Titles, more Heisman Trophies, more Rose Bowl victories, more BCS wins and appearances, more players drafted into the NFL (the list can go oooon and on), and not to mention they have a very comfortable lead in the all time series over UCLA.
UCLA is pitiful in most of those aforementioned categories, and when people think college football in LA, USC will always come first. Sorry bud, just how it is and I apologize for reminding you of the ugly truth.
You can keep your past 2 victories and your “SUCC” jibe, because it’s basically all you got and I wont take that from you.
You’re done, but I had fun with this little debate while it lasted!

          • Yeah boyo just like your one year stint as NCAA baseball champions – man and even more telling the impending loss of that ‘VA’ stadium……one and done

          • That’s why your school will never amount to anything. The highlight of your program is beating a broken USC team..
Try winning something a conference or championship..
But hey great job beating USC..

          • Ha, “what a loser reply” !

Fact is you (CLA) can’t get there (BCS) !!

            What-a-Joke !!!

How about “You own the [Eastern San Fernando Valley] ”

            What-a-Joke x 2

Man it must be sad to be a Bruin ???

            FightOn

  3. I love it, 400lb. Guards, QBs slower than clogged toilets stuck on the books for 4 more years, yes!!

  4. Great. The school, SC in this instant, gives away guaranteed 4-year “contracts” to its revenue generating athletes

What happens to that “contract” if the kid is unhappy with his playing time after 2-years and wants to transfer?

Today’s contracts are only as good as the people behind them

  5. From the LA Times coverage of this announcement…

“The NCAA had long limited athletic scholarships to one year – giving universities an annual choice whether to renew its commitment to a student-athlete – until legislation was passed in August, 2011, allowing member schools to offer scholarships spanning multiple years. However, the arrangement was nearly scrapped six months later when 62.12% of the 330 schools voting went against the legislation – just shy of the 62.5% needed to overturn the new rule.

The schools are not required to award multiple-year scholarships; it’s only an option, and it is not a widespread practice.

Only six schools from the six most influential Division I conferences awarded at least 24 multiple-year scholarships in the year between the spring of 2012 and spring of 2013, according to a report by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

UCLA has offered multiple-year scholarships in certain situations but does not have a uniform policy, according to an athletic program spokesman.”
