USC Giving 4-Year Scholarships

Athletic director Pat Haden announced this morning USC would offer four-year scholarships in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. USC previously offered one-year renewable scholarships.

“In taking this action, USC hopes to help lead the effort to refocus on student-athlete welfare on and off the field,” Haden said.

  1. That’s a great idea. Hopefully there is a similar commitment by the student athlete for four years as well.

      • Besides transfers (such as Amir Carlisle, Ty Isaac and Max Wittek) or players who were released for disciplinary reasons (such as Dillon Baxter and Junior Pomee), which players didn’t enjoy the benefit of having a four year ride, prior to “following the lead of other schools”?…Sure, it would have been nice to unload an overhyped recruit or two, and replaced them with a more productive player, no?… Did the fact that in 2012 we were smack in the middle of our NCAA sanctions prevent us from doing this sooner?… I honestly don’t know… just asking….

        • Good questions. I remember an old movie where the head coach was trying to get the new recruit to quit so they could use his scholarship for someone else, but I’m not sure if it was implied that the scholarship was guaranteed for 4 years back then.

  2. great news, these athletes deserve this. It should have always been this way. Although I wonder, if a athlete is not physically able to continue as an athlete, does the scholarship change to an academic one so as to not limit recruiting scholarships?

  3. Haden’s announcement indemnifies SUCC from ugly recruiting results after its upcoming flat line 7 – 5 season. Haden shovels coal faster but the steam pressure keeps falling.

    • “Haden shovels coal faster but the steam pressure keeps falling.”

      Priceless!

    • Why is a little ruin fan on this page trying to disrespect The Mighty USC TROJANS?The ruins haven’t been relevant for years.have never won a national championship in football and they have no heisman trophy winners at all.FUCLA….IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MIGHTY TROJAN FAMILY!!!

      • Solo, wrong on all three counts!

we got a Natty, a Heisman AND have whipped trOXan butt two years running, and if you want to go back into history, lets take a random point in time to see the trend in the rivalry: starting in 1980 UCLA has 16 victories, Southern Cal has 15 victories with one tie!!

never has one person been so wrong about so much in front of so many!!

maybe you should change your name to “Dumbo”

        • It’s been so long that you last won a shared national championship in football period! The ruins celebrate a win over SC as they’re national championship because that’s about as close as the ruins are going to get to the big show! Yes the ruins have the most national championships in the ncaa but how many natty’s from football???how many heisman trophy winners? Silly Ruins fans SC RUNS L.A.PERIOD!! ALWAYS HAS ALWAYS WILL FIGHT ON! And yes you might have won us two yrs in a row but nothing like the dominance we had over the ruins in the last decade? Remember 50 to 0 ???

          • Butt you said that the ruins “have never won a national championship in football and they have no heisman trophy winners at all.” You really can stay within the realm of the truth and still mock Westwood High.
