USC Morning Buzz: Todd Marinovich Paints A Memorable Moment

MarinovichFor many fans, an enduring image of former USC quarterback Todd Marinovich’s career occurred in the 1990 game against crosstown rival UCLA at the Rose Bowl, when he made an obscene gesture toward a Bruin player.

Marinovich created the above painting himself, which he is selling to the public. A friend tells me the actual story behind the painting is not what the public thinks. Instead of flipping off the UCLA player, Marinovich made the gesture toward wide receiver Gary Wellman because Wellman didn’t side adjust his route as UCLA blitzed so Marinovich had to hold the ball longer and center Criag Gibson didn’t pick it up. Wellman disagrees but that is Marinovich’s version.

  1. Just what I need for my living room– ‘Big Mac & Fries’ Marinovich giving the finger to some player.

    Maybe I will order two.

  2. I guess he has found his calling as a painter. He’s actually quite good.

  3. That is one of my favorite sports photos of all time. It really sums up the SC-UCLA rivalry.

  4. 2 Thoughts…Marijuanovich has always been a classy guy like that. 2nd…what brand of shoes is he wearing?

  5. the amazing thing about this burnt out stoner is that while he would be an embarrassment to most schools for being a petty criminal as well as a huge flop in the pros….at Southern Cal, a school known for such criminals as OJ and Reggie and a whole CONSTELLATION of NFL flops, Todd is mercifully forgotten.

that said, we’ll take one print for Cadre HQ. i like all the blue and gold.

oh, i almost forgot, Sweeeeet Scooooop, wolfman!!

    • Please share with us any evidence showing that Reggie is a criminal.

Be careful with libel or you yourself could end up a criminal.

      • Lake, is that you??

it’s CRIMINAL how Reggie took over $300K in illegal benefits and caused Southern Cal untold shame, loss of schollies and tens of million$ in revenue by some estimates…..but funny this, some trOXans still DEFEND him to the end!!

it’s called…oh what IS that term……..oh yes: DENIAL!!!

oh and libel is not a crime, at worst it is a Civil matter. But i hear Reggie has avoided this topic at all costs, so unlikely he will pursue the matter lest he become subject to discovery including deposition under oath…..and wouldn’t THAT be interesting!!!!

        • Bucket,
          Quit dancing!
You used criminal as a noun which would mean the persons referred to have been convicted of a crime. You were correct about OJ but not Reggie.
With all of the preaching you do here doesn’t it make sense for you to admit you made a mistake?
It seems to me that you are creating an ironic parallel.

  6. What’s the big deal?…….he was simply confirming that he thinks UCLA are #1…..

  7. Ah, so the spin is that he wasn’t flipping off a UCLA player, but that he was instead flipping off one of his teammates? Either way, classy stuff…

  8. I received my print last week, it looks phenomenal, just waiting for the framer to finish. I have another one of Todd’s prints (Despair) he’s an incredibly talented artist!

  9. USC QB sitting on the turf afer being leveled by a Bruin defender? That’s about right. Next up on the canvas: Barr Buries Barkley, followed by Marsh Mashes Kessler. I see a series!

    • I’m a little partial to the hit by Rey Maualuga on former UCLA QB Patrick Cowan…….yes, I know the USC lost that game, but the hit was still awesome….to Cowans credit, he didn’t flip the bird to Maualuga and he popped right back up after the hit, even though he reportedly suffered a concussion and collapsed in practice a few days later…..
