For many fans, an enduring image of former USC quarterback Todd Marinovich’s career occurred in the 1990 game against crosstown rival UCLA at the Rose Bowl, when he made an obscene gesture toward a Bruin player.
Marinovich created the above painting himself, which he is selling to the public. A friend tells me the actual story behind the painting is not what the public thinks. Instead of flipping off the UCLA player, Marinovich made the gesture toward wide receiver Gary Wellman because Wellman didn’t side adjust his route as UCLA blitzed so Marinovich had to hold the ball longer and center Criag Gibson didn’t pick it up. Wellman disagrees but that is Marinovich’s version.
