USC Morning Buzz: Not Every Sport Gets Four-Year Scholarships These Days

USC drew national praise Monday when it announced four-year scholarships for football, men’s and women’s basketball. That same day, two track-and-field athletes faced hearings before a university committee because track coach Caryl Smith-Gilbert wanted to revoke their scholarships. Each athlete experienced a performance decrease under the new coach.

The committee decides whether a scholarship is renewed when a coach does not want an athlete to remain on scholarship. A decision needs to come before scholarships are renewed July 1. This quote from Monday seems even more important now.

“USC hopes to help lead the effort to refocus on student-athlete welfare on and off the field,” athletic director Pat Haden said.

  1. Let me help the Uclan trolls get started. “We beat you in football the last two years” so you stink.” “Our basketball is better than yours so you stink.”
Now that’s out of the way….

Obviously we have something you guys don’t and that is a deep and undying love for USC. Its great to be a Trojan!

    • Jeffrey Dahmer’s sister still loved him too.

Now that THAT’s out of the way, let’s break this down…

If Southern Cal is going to treat its athletes like expendable employees then those employees should be able to form unions to protect their rights!!! And O’Hadden cried the loudest when the Fed Court ruled for the Norghwestern Athletes. Examples like this support the notion that decision was wise.

    • Pat Haden/SUCC speak with forked tongue – agree or disagree? I personally have no problem with you loving SUCC. The issue on this blog is strictly SUCC, not your decision to lovingly support SUCC.

      • The issue is within YOU……why else would you feel compelled to waste your energy on hating something that you obviously cannot control?

          • Full disclosure?……. yes… I actually grind my own coffee beans and brew fresh java for my entire staff, each and every day…in fact, today, we are enjoying a medium roast coffee from Costa Rica.. they love it…….BTW… why are you defending a UCLA troll?……

          • I’m not defending him, I’m defending the concept of free speech. Think of it like the ACLU defending the KKK to protest in Skokie Illinois (remember the Blues Brothers movie?).

          • forget it, Goo-Goo, trOXans are lock-step thinkers like the GOP who don’t believe in science (e.g. evolution or climate change) because the party wackos tell them what to think!!

that’s why the hate the wolfman….the ultimate gone-rogue Maverick!!!

          • Of course, we believe in evolution….everyone knows that you evolved from monkey dung….

          • chuck buck, evolution is inherently a racist theory while creationism is neutral on that point. Evolution implies survivol of the fittest meaning that some members of the species are more evolved and advanced than others. creationism implies that all men (and women) are created in God’s image. which sounds less pernicious to you???? Please do not talk about items that you have fully thought through. The same morons who complain that Christians are bigoted, racist backward thinkers really are more “progressive” in their thinking that those secular thinkers.

          • wow.

            ok we GOT ONE!!!

brother, i thank you for sharing the latest creationist propaganda! it is quite “creative” and amusing!!

of course you got the science all wrong (darwin’s theory) but i appreciate the attempt at clever rhetoric.

reminds me of when i let someone talk me into stopping at the Dinosaur statues next to Monongo Casino. the Brontosaurus was actually a “creationist museum” when you walk into it. sugary sweeeeet!!!

fun fact: Pee Wee’s BIg Adventure shot scenes there. the Wheel Inn has just barely edible food, though.

          • When people cannot discredit the message, they often discredit the messenger using cheap parlour tricks such as name calling. Is that what you are doing here? I wonder…

          • You’ re the one who called Darwin’s theory racist!

To the contrary, I want you to enlighten the ignorant masses with the TRUTH, brother!!

            Get DOWN, Billy Brown!!!

          • Hundreds of black human beings were displayed as transitional forms of human evolution at zoos and at the St Louis World’s Fair and aborigines in Australia being hunted and killed for their bones to be studied by evolutionary scientists. Evolution inspired Hitler’s theory of the Master Race.

          • Can you prove that the earth is billions of years old? Can you prove that God does not exist? So is it fair for me to raise the probability of your ignorance because you can’t?

          • I can’t, but a Paleontologist or physical Anthropologist could. Believe it or not 10ski, Dinosaurs walked the earth for approx. 70 million years. Their bones prove the earth is at least older than 7000 years. Faith and facts don’t mix – that’s why Church and State are separate.

          • Except he can’t explain why there are intact red blood cells and protein in the bone marrow of those dinosaurs.

          • I’m saying the science says there are intact red blood cells and protein in the bone marrow of those dinosaurs. Can you explain that? Or are you anti-science?

          • I am not out to attack anyone’s beliefs, but with all due respect I have to question that assertion. But if true, that would an enormous scientific bombshell. Could you please cite the source for this evidence, I would love to read it. Thanks

          • Dinosaur Cells In T. Rex Fossil? Shocking Find Gets New Support From Molecular Analysis

            | Posted: 10/20/2012 2:10 am EDT Updated: 10/20/2012 2:18 am EDT Huffington Post

Do fossils of dinosaurs, such as Tyrannosaurus rex, contain soft tissues?

            By Kate Wong

RALEIGH—Twenty years ago, paleontologist Mary Schweitzer made anastonishing discovery. Peering through a microscope at a slice of dinosaur bone, she spotted what looked for all the world like red blood cells. It seemed utterly impossible—organic remains were not supposed to survive the fossilization process—but test after test indicated that the spherical structures were indeed red blood cells from a 67-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex. In the years that followed, she and her colleagues discovered other apparent soft tissues, including what seem to be blood vessels and feather fibers. But controversy accompanied their claims. Skeptics argued that the alleged organic tissues were instead biofilm—slime formed by microbes that invaded the fossilized bone.

Schweitzer and her colleagues have continued to amass support for their interpretation. The latest evidence comes from a molecular analysis of what look to be bone cells, or osteocytes, from T. rex and Brachylophosaurus canadensis. The researchers isolated the possible osteocytes and subjected them to several tests. When they exposed the cell-like structures to an antibody that targets a protein called PHEX found only in bird osteocytes (birds are descended from dinosaurs), the structures reacted, as would be expected of dinosaur osteocytes. And when the team subjected the supposed dinosaur cells to other antibodies that target DNA, the antibodies bound to material in small, specific regions inside the apparent cell membrane.

Furthermore, using a technique called mass spectrometry, the investigators found amino acid sequences of proteins in extracts of the dinosaur bone that matched sequences from proteins called actin, tubulin and histone4 that are present in the cells of all animals. Although some microbes have proteins that are similar to actin and tubulin, the researchers note that soil-derived E. coli as well as sediments that surrounded the two dinosaur specimens failed to bind to the actin and tubulin antibodies that bound to the extract containing the apparent osteocytes.

Schweitzer and her collaborators detailed their findings in a paper released online October 16 in the journal Bone and in a talk given October 17 in Raleigh at theannual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. “Here’s the data in support of a biofilm origin,” Schweitzer said in her presentation as she showed a blank slide. “We haven’t found any yet.”

          • So you’re a conceptual defender…..Yes, I remember the BB flick….it’s a classic good stuff……”I hate Illinois Nazis”….

          • I guess I just did…. by responding to your post…..it won’t happen again… at least not today….

    • It’s called an inferiority complex…….how else can you explain why no REAL USC fans bother trolling Wangs blog?…..it just doesn’t add up…at least they don’t take out their frustrations on their wives or children…

  2. Why is it on this blog that folks discuss everything but the topic of the thread? Its basically UCLA folks all day trash talking with USC folks. Im frankly surprised that UCLA folks would want to discuss USC topics all day. Isnt the content on the UCLA Blog interesting enough?

      • Instead of attempting to limit free speech here, why don’t you increase free speech there? With apologies to that great civil libertarian Whoopie Goldberg of The View, the answer to speech you disagree with is more speech, not censorship.

        • The only person limiting free speech on this blog is Gina the Moderator….she has altered my posts on more than one occasion…….It’s bad enough that you admit to watching The View, but you’re now quoting Whoopie, too?….Armageddon is upon us!

          • I don’t watch it, but Whoopie’s anti-free speech antics against Will Cain were mentioned today on the internet newsbusters site.

          • Bleauz,

I notice that as well. Gina or Scott or whoever has deleted and manipulated my post for some reason. Im not sure if its to create more controversy. Im not sure why my post of the picture of the helmet that Scott mention was removed.

          • They can be a little hyper sensitive, at times….. especially when the trolls go crazy flagging posts because their fragile feelings get hurt….

    • As you already know, there’s rarely any point to Scotties posts…. it’s just kibble for the trolls and/or fodder for one of his future lame polls…

    • Scottie thinks all college athletes in all sports should be guaranteed four-year rides regardless of how they perform, whether they help the team or not, even if they hurt the team or regress. Once you sign ’em, they’re yours. Mistakes cannot be corrected. Easy for Scottie to say. He doesn’t have to win to keep his job and his contribution to scholarships of any sort is zero.

  3. Sad that Gilbert has to attempt to take a scholarship back from a kid. However her teams are strapped with not being able to compete in distance races and field events.
USC needs to take a serious look at Stanford and Oregon on how they fund their athletic programs. Stanford is the perennial winner of the Directors Cup and Oregon with however Nike is pouring funds into their program now dominate Football, Baseball, and Track and Field.

    • Nobody is taking away field events and distance runners from Smith-Gilbert. She has chosen to put almost all of her scholarships in the sprints, hurdles, and relays. USC had plenty of field event and distance runner All Americans during his 19 years on the job. (Bryant-SP, White-JT,Mambo-TJ, Erdelyi-3k Steeple, Langerholc-800, Vashchuk-1500, Budniak-3k Steeple).
Most of those All Americans were international students. But you have to think outside the box when you have scholarship limitations. And I predict, this will be reason why Smith-Gilbert will not live up to Ron Allice type standards.
And for those of you who point to the men’s 4th place finish at the NCAA Championships as a sign that Smith-Gilbert is doing great. I will remind you that every point scored on the men’s side was a senior. They were Ron Allice athletes. Let’s see how the next few years go. Then we can evaluate correctly.

      • My Gawd, give her a chance to get her team on the track. It sounds like she is attempting to do some shuffling to place athletes in other events. I believe she will bring in some Distance runners and Field event athletes.
She was named the Western Region Womens Coach of the Year. She had a pretty stellar record coming out of Florida I frankly didnt think Allice made the best use of his scholarship by spreading them around enough.

        • If you didn’t think Ron Allice made good use of his scholarships, then look at the 2001 women’s team that won the NCAA Championships with 66 points. The Women of Troy had runners in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 400H, 1500, 4×100, 4×400, LJ, TJ, SP, JT, HT,

  4. Completely justified. There are athletes who have essentially never competed. Don’t believe it? Look at past news reports of recruits then look at meet records. Worse, the entire team is affected by the low gpa of an athlete who is not performing academically (not uncommon), thus threatening post conference competition. And the former coaching staff typically offered T&F recruits full ride. All the way around a bad situation. Totally support the administration’s efforts to correct this problem.

      • You really this stupid Dogpatch?

Figure it out. You’ll have to stop drinking that Drano or your feeble mind will never grasp the concept.

Seek help now. Boy, are you ever dumb.

        • Jackie the Trust Fund Baby Brony, that is no was to Make Friendship Magic! Now why don’t you go play with your plastic griffons, dragons and unicorns and leave the serious sports talk to the men folk? That’s a good twink!

          • Answer what,Jackie the Trust Fund Baby Brony? Your uncivil rant? There is Discord in Canterlot tonight after you were found to be lying about Norm Chow’s well-documented attempted re-hire by Heritage Hall and were beaten down for it.

          • Dogpatch is an idiot supreme either on or off his meds. Just read his bizarre responses to me. He follows me around like a puppy dog. I’m so into Dogpatch’s head, he thinks I’m a Bruin fan who lives in some place labeled Canterlot. Scary weirdo.

          • I hear you…last time I conversed with the poor soul he was accusing me of being “Golly-Nerd” (whoever/whatever that is) and ranting about Comic Con and Hong Kong vacations. If I had to guess this individual has racked up frequent flier miles going back and forth to Thailand…

          • Now Golly-Nerd, you really have to do a better job of disguising yourself when you change handles after being humiliated here. Your latent homosexual themes and vampire hour postings give you away every time.

          • Jackie the Trust Fund Baby Brony, it’s so predictable that you would bring your My Little Pony playmate Golly-Nerd back to defend you. Heaven knows none of the other rah rahs lifted a finger to help you. I bet that made you feel really sad.

          • Hey it’s Golly-Nerd! I was so worried you had slit your wrists again after you latest banning. Are the rumors true that you were the Wookie that set off the fire alarm at the Phoenix Comic Con convention 3 weeks ago? Is that why you disappeared, to lie low until the police gave up looking for you?

          • Answer what,Jackie the Trust Fund Baby Brony? Your uncivil rant? There is Discord in Canterlot tonight after you were found to be lying about Norm Chow’s well-documented attempted re-hire by Heritage Hall and were beaten down for it.

  5. In other news, Vandy just exposed the “private schools can’t win baseball championships anymore” story you trogans love as false. Lose on!

    • I noticed that last night. I was surprised Scott didn’t lead with that today. The rah rah conventional wisdom is that SC can’t compete for the national title because we are a private school and we can’t get decent walk ons with the ridiculously high tuition we charge.

  6. this just in to Cadre HQ: NCAA has totally BOTCHED the O’Bannon trial!!

    POWER to the people!!!

the Plantation mentality of private schools like SOUTHERN Cal is further GUTTED!!

Unions, Profit Sharing, true Communism is finally within our GRASP!!!

next: the Southern Cal DMV gates are coming down!!!

oh, Eddie O, you’ve done it AGAIN!!
