Trobabes vs. Brubabes

TROBABES

Monte Rustan/L.A. Examiner

Here is the 1955 USC vs. UCLA freshman football game at the Coliseum. In those days, freshmen were not eligible to play and were placed on their own teams. The teams were called the Trobabes and the Brubabes.

we always got to the stadium early for the frosh game, the future varsity players were just as well coached, and just as enjoyable to watch.

Same thing was done in basketball (prior to 1973). Can you imagine a frosh team being any stronger than the 1966 frosh ucla team composed of Lew Alcindor, Lucius Allen, Lynn Shackelford, Kenny Heitz, and Jim Neilson? These guys even beat the varsity, who had won the NC the year before in a preseason game. I was at Paulette for that game as well as the redemption against Houston several years down the road. Will never forget either game. Gary Cunningham, an acquaintence of mine was the frosh coach. Not sure that doing away with frosh teams was a good thing, but I too enjoyed those games none-the-less.

I watched the UCLA loss at the Astrodome, on Elvin Hayes free throws. Guy Lewis reacted like a crazy jerk after the 2 pt. win, very much like the stampeding SUCCsters after the gyp 2013 Stanford FB win.

The UCLA/#1 Houston rematch happened during the Semi-Finals of NCAA tournament at Sports Arena. UCLA destroyed the #1 Houston team 102 – 69. I have not seen a NC college Basketball team since, that could do any better than Houston. I still have the Sports Illustrated issue that featured the cover of Alcindor releasing a sky hook from about 14ft. off the ground as E. Hayes watched knock-kneed on the SA floor. As usual Wooden was gracious in victory, and the UCLA crowd didn’t stampede onto the court. BTW, the Houston Team Mgr. was arrested that night outside the SA for scalping tickets.

Can’t wait to witness the Palo Alto Stanford/SUCC FB rematch in September.

Favorites don’t rush the court/field. UCLA was odds on to win the SA rematch..as was the Tree in FB last year when we upset them. Actually it is a compliment to the vanquished, as it tacitly admits to their being a relatively strong favorite, and better team. (according to Vegas anyway).
Nice way to stay on topic. If someone mentioned that crops were failing in Tunisia, I assume your spin would be about alleged USC inadequacies. Some would say that it is straw grasping.
Back to the subject at hand, If memory serves me correctly, didn’t Lew have his cornea scratched in that game at the Astrodome? You neglected to mention that JW was also gracious in defeat.

Lar Dog, at that time, the Cougars were undefeated and the unanimous #1 basketball team in the nation. Is it your contention UCLA was favored in the semi-final game? I think not. I’lll need some proof old man.

I compared Guy Lewis’ “gosh Molly, we won the game” jerk behavior to SUCC’s behavior after their gyp Stanford win. I stand by that comparison. There is a difference though Lar Dog.

Houston had never upset/beat a UCLA type team ever, and their win propelled Houston into the nations #1 team.

SUCC, on the other hand has played Stanford FB,90 times as of the 2013. SUCC is 58 (61%) – 29 – 3 against. the Cardinal. I’m betting, once Stanford (favorite or dog) kicks the krap out SUCC in September, their fans won’t bother stampeding the field; SUCC FB isn’t worth it.

If you mentioned the Murrieta D bags protesting illegal women and child, I might be able to work up some SUCC linkage.

          • gotroy22

How about the ruin d bags who were burning the American flags out at Murietta?

        • gotroy22

Were we the favorites in 1999 when we stormed the field after beating the ruins?

        • rusoviet

Gracious in defeat? According to whom? You?

Look I get you’re acting as the ‘arbitrator’ of this SC website – I do based on what? You’re 70 or approaching it?

Allow the rest who watched the ‘con’ that Wooden truly was (not gracious in defeat boyo – ask Bob Boyd and the ‘expectorating by his wife when Mo Williams took them down in ’69′) and his enabler JD Morgan intimidate the tournament officials and the LA Times, Herald-Examiner, CBS et. al. on what a phony saint this con truly was..

Looking forward to the demolition of the Sports Arena just as the university is doing at the NW corner of Exposition and Figueroa

As Bob Boyd said “I knew I could I could beat Wooden…what I couldn’t beat was Sam Gilbert.”

And yet UCLA has 11 Basketball NC’s and SUCC is 0 forever. Squawk on CommieSUCC – Little Petey Pom-Pom didn’t know squat!

Hey ugly who owns a pizza delivery car, how much did wooden aka woodie pay lew alcindor, lucius allen, bill the stoner walton, and the rest of the pros of ugly?

          Yawn.

        • gotroy22

You don’t want to go there PT, the same thing was going on then with our football program under John McKay and John Robinson as was shown in the 1982 probation report.

  • TrojanLights

I was on 1968 USC Freshman team. Don’t remember us being called the Trobabes. Just the USC Frosh.
