Meanwhile In “Student-Athlete Welfare” Scholarship News

A university committee recently rejected an attempt by USC track coach Caryl Smith-Gilbert to revoke one of her athlete’s scholarships. You cannot take away a scholarship for a performance decrease, which the athlete experienced under the new coach. It was a fairly simple case for the committee, which decides when a coach does not want an athlete to remain on scholarship.

Smith-Gilbert actually tried to revoke two scholarships and I’ll address the second case when I confirm the results.

Why she tried to get rid of two athletes’ scholarships is puzzling when you consider USC patted itself on the back two weeks ago for awarding four-year scholarships in football and basketball.

“USC hopes to help lead the effort to refocus on student-athlete welfare on and off the field,” athletic director Pat Haden said regarding the four-year scholarships.

  1. “when I confirm the results.”

FYI……betomas is an unreliable source, it’s true!

  2. Ms. Smith Gilbert evidently is not familiar with the wolfman’s reputation for stellar reportage!!!

Ms. Smith GIlbert, did you learn NOTHING from the Kiffin regime??

    the wolfman misses NOTHING!!

i would actually recommend staffing any major decision WITH the wolfman in advance to avoid any further embarrassment. .

so just take your spanking, and proceed accordingly.

  3. OOoh boy 400lbs. guards and QBs slower than clogged toilets for 4 more years yes! Ha… .

  4. Track scholarships weren’t in included in Haden’s loss-leader, semi-magnanimous 4 year scholarships offer – those scholarships are just offered to Football and Basketball recruits. Haden had to do something, no sane person wants to continually lose in SUCC’s elementary school Basketball program. .

      • Busted Jet. But truth sometimes hurts. Guaranteed 4 year scholarships might help SUCC Basketball recruiting negate some of SUCC’s abysmal Basketball program’s W/L record. This is LA, and “Hoops” count – just not at SUCC.

  5. Wolf making a blanket comment on a private, confidential procedure. Just enough information to stir the pot, yet not provide any background info. Were the scholarships indeed revoked?? And, when & why do these committees meet? If they’re part of the ‘due process’ at the school, why not mention that?
