`Student-Athlete Welfare’ Scholarship News Update

This is an update to yesterday’s post about a track athlete winning their hearing to keep their scholarship after Coach Caryl Smith-Gilbert tried to revoke it. A second athlete also fought to keep their scholarship and the committee ruled in their favor but the athlete lost 20 percent because of an academic-related issue.

That 20 percent won’t help Smith-Gilbert much when it costs more than $50,000 to go to USC. In any case, the committee demonstrated if you are going to remove scholarships, you must have legitimate reasons, not just unhappiness over performance.
