USC Morning Buzz LB Comparison: Jack Del Rio v. Chris Claiborne

DEL.RIO

Jack Del Rio was selected for the Hall of Fame yesterday, which immediately raises an interesting comparison. What made him a superior candidate to Chris Claiborne?  Del Rio was a consensus All-American in 1984 and co-MVP of the 1985 Rose Bowl. Claiborne is the only USC winner of the Butkus Award and a unanimous All-American in 1998. He was also the Pac-10 defensive player of the year.

One could make the argument (as USC listed) that Del Rio also played baseball. But no one would even be speaking about him if he wasn’t a stellar football player. Instead, what probably made him attractive for the Hall of Fame is the publicity he received last year as the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator. That will help sell tickets to the dinner.

And I’m willing to give him something since USC fans will not have to put up with him as the Trojans’ football coach.

  1. Wake up. If you don’t buy a table or don’t show, you won’t be chosen.

  2. I’d say in time Claiborn will get in easily. Pete Carroll was obviously a timely and sure fire choice, they didn’t need Del Rio in the same class so the typical conspiracy theory nonsense won’t play this time.

  3. Scottie: what’s with al the emphasis on selling tickets to the dinner? It should be about the inductees and their careers and not petty things like selling tickets, especially from someone who gets in for free.

  4. Today is another great day in paradise. I hope everyone has a great day.

    Seize the moment!

      • Unfortunately, it seems as though Mr. Chuckers Bucket is still in his denial stage of recovery. This stage tends to take the longest to overcome and is the most arduous. Once he progresses past this stage, I believe he shall overcome the remaining typical obstacles on the road to positivity and self fulfillment.

It’s nice to know there are others on this board that have a genuine concern for his welfare.

        • I just hope the guy can make a full recovery. My prayers go out to him

        • Yet your own recovery from alcoholism is in doubt. You must not have one more mojito my friend. It turns you angry and bitter.

          • I’m not sure what you are talking about. Please elaborate so I can understand what you speak of.

            Thanks in advance,

            Your brother Juan Carlos

  5. Scottie, Scottie, Scottie…..the world isn’t perfect, nor is it fair….Why don’t you ask the selection committee about their reasoning for choosing these inductees?…for that matter, the MLB All-Star Game selections are a joke….the MLB HOF without Pete Rose is a crock….and the sports writers, who vote on this, historically “pride” themselves by not inducting most players on the first ballot… talk about egos….
