Brice Taylor was the first All-American in USC history in 1925. He accomplished this despite not having a left hand. Taylor was also the head coach at Southern University and helped start the Bayou Classic against Grambling. He is also in the USC Hall of Fame.

It’s somewhat ironic that SUCC’s 100 yd practice field is named for Howard Jones. As the SUCC HC, Jones never, as far as any research can validate, recruited or signed an African American FB player.
In the late 1930’s The UCLA football team featured Kenny Washington, Jackie Robinson, Woody Strode, and Ray Bartlett. At that time there were only a few dozen Black Football Players in ALL of College football.

Robinson thought so much of the way he was treated at UCLA, and a diploma from there, that he dropped out of school just shy of graduation? UCLA had nothing to do with his MLB career. He played one season and had a BA of less than .100 as a Bruin. His greatest spring-sports accomplishment was a NCAA long-jump title. He was without a doubt the greatest multi-sport athlete in UCLA history, and a great piece of the civil-rights movement. Not true TL. BB recruited an Afro-American FB player in 1970, but he was ineligible to play, because freshman @ the time, were barred by NCAA rule from varsity FB participation.
Ok you are technically correct on Wilbur Jackson being in Bama program in 1970. However it was monumental when USC’s Sam Cunningham when to Birmingham to rumble over the Tide. Some say that game did more for intergration in the South than Martin Luth King.
I saw a documentary on how it was Alabama’s Bear Bryant plan to schedule a game with USC as he knew we had Black football players. It was his idea to invite USC to Alabama for a game to open the eyes of those in the South that they needed to have black players if they were to compete amongst the elite of college football.
After that game Bear went to the University President and said, “We have to have some of those (Blacks) guys if we are to compete going forward.
It appears Bryant had that famous conversation with the university president when he recruited Jackson the year before we played them.
It may or may not have been the year before. However that does not discredit the USC game vs Alabama a being the hallmark that opened the doors to SEC football intergration.

USC now has the highest % of foreign students of any university/college in the nation – it has made legion steps both internationally and in So.-Central Los Angeles.
All USC employees through three descending generations are given a full scholarship once the employee has worked at University Park – this is what makes Troy truly special
What you mean to say CS, is SUCC has the most Chinese Mainland students in the nation. SUCC recruits Chinese students heavily in Mainland China and Taiwan – way more than in the hoods and barrios of LA or Ca. Why? – the Chinese can afford the steep nut of out of state SUCC tuition. In addition CS, SUCC’s athleticgraduation (i.e. FB and Basketball ) rates historically rank 11th or 12th in the Pac-12 conf. – hardly a quality reference for 4 yr. SUCC athletic scholarships.
We do get a number of Chinese students. However USC also has students from 129 other nations. We have a good number from India, South Korea, and Indonesia. Those are not wealthy nations.
I have no objection with SUCC’s Chinese Student population. However, I’m willing to bet (99.9% of those Chinese students paid full tuition) and so did the Indian, So. Korean, and Indonesian students @ SUCC. I’m just saying the % of foreign students enormously exceeds all students from the Ca and LA Hoods and Barrios.

Well it takes money to run a private university. Not just the minorities from the hoods or barrios feel the pinch in the wallet. I saw a post on one of the other sites yesterday that reflected the high costs of tuition at colleges now a day. Middle class and upper middle class families are being forced to take out student loans.
I’m not going to refute your point either that these Chinese students are paying top dollar to get in here.
I have failed to my point clear. SUCC is in the education business, and has every right to demand tuition. The Chinese are diligent students and deserve their opportunity. But SUCC is also located in the middle of a lower economic section of LA where some of it’s citizens deserve the same chance as the Chinese but can’t afford 70k a year or their unwilling to go into life long debt to obtain an education. SUCC should be helping more of its disadvantaged constituents obtain the education they can’t afford in local neighborhood. Two year SUCC full scholarships would really help i.e. Two yrs Jr. College, then Two years at SUCC.
USC us doing more than you may be aware of for the community. As one poster made reference to in this thread USC offers free classes to its employees and their families, a number of them who are from the neihboorhood.
As I mentioned in another one of my post in this thread; USC has adopted the surrounding public schools into its Family of schools. It offers tutoring and inclass teaching assistance to those schoools the year around

USC also has its Upwad Bound Program that works with minority students from the community:
Part of the university since 1977, Upward Bound is an intensive pre-college preparatory program comprising three components:
1. The Saturday Academy, an academic support program that meets at USC’s University Park campus on Saturdays from September to May, providing tutoring, academic advisement, college tours, enrichment courses and SAT preparation;
2. A summer residential program that gives students a real college experience by allowing them to live and take classes on the University Park campus.
3. Ongoing assessment by an academic adviser who makes weekly visits to partner schools, meeting with students, teachers and counselors to make sure that students are on track academically.
As you mentioned in your post USC is in the education Business and has every right to demand tuition. To ask USC to give 2 yrs free tuition to anyone one with the grades from South Los Angeles would put them out of business. Not to mention cause an uproar from potential students outside the area.

I disagree that two years scholarships would force SUCC in chapter whatever bankruptcy court. Besides, what SUCC charges itself for tuition and what the retail cost of the same education is, I’m fairly sure, substantially different.

What I’m suggesting is SUCC provide x number of scholarships in 5-7 career specific plans ( i.e. Nursing, Accounting, business, teaching, etc.). ThaiMex is being pretty cruel in his depiction of the environment at USC till approximately the 1960s. however you dont hear much about any black athletes at USC till that time. It does sort of mirror the general student population at USC till that time.
I hate to say it however USC was negatively referred to as a ‘White Island in a Black Sea” during the 60s. as the Black population surrounded the residential area at that time.
The University’s Black student population was nearly nil I’m sure till about 1960. Im not sure who would have to take responsibility for that.
