Player Spotlight: Brice Taylor

BRICEBrice Taylor was the first All-American in USC history in 1925. He accomplished this despite not having a left hand. Taylor was also the head coach at Southern University and helped start the Bayou Classic against Grambling. He is also in the USC Hall of Fame.

  1. One wonders why Brice Taylor was USC’s sole African-American player of worth until well after the end of WWII – why did this potential beginning of equality suddenly flat line for over 3 decades?

      • No. It wasn’t until the 1950’s, thirty years later, that C.R. Roberts was recruited. At that time most SUCC fraternities were “Whites only.” Roberts did most of his socializing at UCLA. It’s somewhat ironic that SUCC’s 100 yd practice field is named for Howard Jones. As the SUCC HC, Jones never, as far as any research can validate, recruited or signed an African American FB player.

        • In the late 1930’s The UCLA football team featured Kenny Washington, Jackie Robinson, Woody Strode, and Ray Bartlett. At that time there were only a few dozen Black Football Players in ALL of College football.
What is it that makes you knuckleheads so proud?
          fit Un!

          • True very true – the one I always wished Troy had snagged was Strode.

“I don’t want to know your name and you don’t want to know mine…” said to who?

          • Someone later said to the guy who said the above…
            “Pompy, my gun”
a wonderful man and a brilliant actor….and a UCLA BRUIN!
            fit Un!

          • Don’t think anyone on here is proud of this unjust time in history. Just giving props to the few that made it on the field or in the classroom.

          • When you knuckleheads bash the “Bel-arians” (especially RUSTUPID after a few Stoli’s) for their LIBERAL Politics and views….you deserve to be treated like a little puppy that soils the carpet. Disneyland street Lamps, and clocks, and The Kid’s Choice awards are watered down coats of paint in an attempt to cover up years of prejudice…Sam Cunningham came around in 1970 THIRTY PLUS YEARS after Kenny Washington, and Jackie Robinson, baseballs FIRST Black Player. How about all the symbolism behind that other RACIST SYMBOL, Traveler? I am not the least bit surprised that Spineless Sanctimonious D-bag blowhard T-Family has completely disappeared…..and he’s the biggest loud mouth accusing everyone (Bruin Fans) of being racist. No doubt he has his head in the sand waiting till its safe to come out.
            Fit Un LIMBO U!

          • Robinson thought so much of the way he was treated at UCLA, and a diploma from there, that he dropped out of school just shy of graduation? UCLA had nothing to do with his MLB career. He played one season and had a BA of less than .100 as a Bruin. His greatest spring-sports accomplishment was a NCAA long-jump title. He was without a doubt the greatest multi-sport athlete in UCLA history, and a great piece of the civil-rights movement. The comments on Cunningham were about his role (along with Jimmy Jones and Clarence Davis) on the all-black Trojan backfield that shook up the SEC in 1970. Troll On/Shill On!

          • 1970? Wow…that’s mighty white of you. 1970???? Really? Who wasn’t jumping on the civil rights bandwagon in 1970?
If you want to belittle the significance of UCLA….explain why Robinson, Washington et al. , didn’t attend Fig Tech? Explain why it took you knuckleheads till 1970 to integrate?
Jackie Robinson was a UCLA BRUIN…, Just like Arthur Ashe….
Old racist habits are hard to give up over at good ol’ LIMBO U!
            fit Un!

          • Wow! Can you spin things. What in my comment makes you think I am a racist? You are sick! Jackie Robinson was my childhood idol, and remains as such in my senior years, as a athlete and as a man.
Read/Think before you respond. Again, you are one sick troll/shill.

          • Still, about thirty years after Brice Taylor and did he ever play a down of SUCC varsity football?

          • That certainly qualifies Mr. Hawthorne as participating FB player.

    • Thats a very good question rusoviet. It’s even more amazing that we had a black football player star as early as 1925 and it took the vaunted SEC till 1970 and that was at the nudging of USC.

      • Not true TL. BB recruited an Afro-American FB player in 1970, but he was ineligible to play, because freshman @ the time, were barred by NCAA rule from varsity FB participation.

        • Ok you are technically correct on Wilbur Jackson being in Bama program in 1970. However it was monumental when USC’s Sam Cunningham when to Birmingham to rumble over the Tide. Some say that game did more for intergration in the South than Martin Luth King.
I saw a documentary on how it was Alabama’s Bear Bryant plan to schedule a game with USC as he knew we had Black football players. It was his idea to invite USC to Alabama for a game to open the eyes of those in the South that they needed to have black players if they were to compete amongst the elite of college football.

After that game Bear went to the University President and said, “We have to have some of those (Blacks) guys if we are to compete going forward.

          • It appears Bryant had that famous conversation with the university president when he recruited Jackson the year before we played them.

          • It may or may not have been the year before. However that does not discredit the USC game vs Alabama a being the hallmark that opened the doors to SEC football intergration.

        • Yeah there was that stellar move by bel-air tech admin to ram Billy Bolden up Prothro’s back side – oh I’m sorry that wasn’t the ‘BB’ you were referring to? Hmm why is that johnnie west side whitebread – I mean you knew all about ‘Bear Bryant but not ‘Billy Bolden’ – talk about a complete mess – imagine Tommy Prothro having to accept this clown and when he needed him most the guy went ‘UCLA owns LA Football’ on him…’Coach I have a headache…tell Gary I can’t….where’s mommy?”

Save the 1966 Rose Bowl name me one game ucla is famous for? BTW I don’t mean your own mind set johnnie west side whitebread but for the real fans of college football.

          • I always thought their high point after Prothro, who I agree was their smartest coach, was when Vermeil had a cup of coffee in Westwood and led them to defeat #1 Ohio State in the Rose Bowl in 1976.

          • Many don’t remember ‘but’ when Vermeil was weighing whether to leave for the Eagles McKay had already announced he was off for the new Tampa franchise. Vermeil asked McKay what he (Vermeil0 should do?

McKay was quoted as saying “Once maybe twice in life the brass ring comes around – grab it when it does!” And Vermeil did and was a great coach.

          • Tom are you in relief of CommieSUCC for unrelated verbiage. Kentucky 1967? Please explain.

          • Not Tom, but Kentucky’s Nat Northington, a sophomore, started at defensive back vs Ole Miss in September 1967, becoming the first black player to play in a SEC conference game. Kentucky recruited two black players in 1966.

          • Was that before Texas El Paso beat Kentucky (all black vs all white) in NCAA final Game. I believe Pat Riley was on the Kentucky team

          • If recruiting signing day was in February back in 1966 as it is now, then it was indeed before the Miners upset Riles The Dictator and his Kentucky Wildcats in the NCAA March Madness.

          • Problem is boyo it was the initial post that got the usual ‘swagger’ from ‘homers’ to dig deeper into the reality of the horrific time gap between Taylor and Willie Brown.

What I loathed about you Bruins is your happy to rip USC but never ever will admit anything in Any way at bel-air tech – you never do.

UCLA fans remind one of Boston Red Sox fans – the worst fan base in all of the USA. And yes boyo we’re your addiction USC – the Yankees.

  2. Thanks, wolfman…but I am FLOORED by the fact that the Chucker-Bucker, who knows more about Southern Cal football than 95% of the readers of this blog, has NEVER HEARD of this one-handed, Arfican-American All-American from the 1920’s????

What POWERFUL FORCES have pushed this remarkable hero into the shadows????

maybe HE should have a statue on campus as a priority before the hideous carousel horsie or the Disneyland clock????

    • Hey there’s that ‘anatomically’ correct re-construction of ‘woodie’s hole’ replete with all the ‘junk’ he squirreled away in his ‘den’ with paid docent on campus no less – then again what else is there but the ‘woodster’.
Heck bel-air tech even has a schollie named after Sam Gilbert’s widow – no shame there – nah never ever any accountability just good old “oh come let us adore him….”
      “I told Bill Walton I don’t like it …not a bit…”

Hey you know since TJ Simers ‘retired’ from the OC Register I guess the mantle to adore woodie is one spear carrier lighter…

      • Are you on medication? I can never make it past the first couple of sentences…not that I try anymore. If you got something to say, just say it for crissakes.

      • UCLA: the University 1919 – present: Wooden” 10 Basketball National Championships.

SUCC: the University 1883 – present: Zip Zero, Zilch, Nein, Zone,Nought, Naught, Nought or none Basketball NC’s.

When you quite breathing CS, Wooden’ achievements will still be engraved in blue and gold.

  3. Brice (“cause’ the Alligator bit it”, /Jerry Reed) Taylor arrived on campus 25 years after Joseph Pomeroy Widney, racial theorist, author and President of USC left his mark on good ol’ SoSo Cal. “He wrote books that espoused white supremacy”, including “Race Life of the Aryan Peoples”. Widney’s “writings are still quoted today by white supremacist groups like the National Vanguard”.
Just another contribution to SoSo Cals rich tradition.
    I applaud Brice Taylor.

    • No argument there – Stanford had a president with the same belief system – David Starr Jordan – in addition (same time period – early 1920’s) UC Board of Regents were on board. USC Chancellor Rufus Von Klenismid was a strong advocate – all of these are rightly pilloried for their beliefs but the worst is that ‘saint’ of the feminazis – Margaret Sanger cold hard eugenicist – you never see that in the propaganda the left cranks out to honor her.

My point is I strongly believe it was this very rampant belief system that did indeed limit African-American and other minority athletes/students attending USC untl the late 50’s early 60’s – flat out.

      • USC now has the highest % of foreign students of any university/college in the nation – it has made legion steps both internationally and in So.-Central Los Angeles.

All USC employees through three descending generations are given a full scholarship once the employee has worked at University Park – this is what makes Troy truly special

        • What you mean to say CS, is SUCC has the most Chinese Mainland students in the nation. SUCC recruits Chinese students heavily in Mainland China and Taiwan – way more than in the hoods and barrios of LA or Ca. Why? – the Chinese can afford the steep nut of out of state SUCC tuition. In addition CS, SUCC’s athleticgraduation (i.e. FB and Basketball ) rates historically rank 11th or 12th in the Pac-12 conf. – hardly a quality reference for 4 yr. SUCC athletic scholarships.

          • We do get a number of Chinese students. However USC also has students from 129 other nations. We have a good number from India, South Korea, and Indonesia. Those are not wealthy nations.

          • I have no objection with SUCC’s Chinese Student population. However, I’m willing to bet (99.9% of those Chinese students paid full tuition) and so did the Indian, So. Korean, and Indonesian students @ SUCC. I’m just saying the % of foreign students enormously exceeds all students from the Ca and LA Hoods and Barrios.

          • But this ‘post’ is all on you Johnnie west side whitebread – you and all the other morons leftist gutless he/shes that ape the idiocy of the left – Brice Taylor knew bigotry in his life and he overcame such – you and your love affair for ‘woodies’ rat hole haven’t a clue…

          • CommieSUCC channels Mr. Brice Taylor. LOL. Just for the record counselor, when and where did you and Mr. Taylor sign the agreement that allows you to speak about the bigotry in his life; and, what or what not Mr.Taylor overcame because of his SUCC education?

CommieSUCC, you are one half – arsed cretin.

          • Well it takes money to run a private university. Not just the minorities from the hoods or barrios feel the pinch in the wallet. I saw a post on one of the other sites yesterday that reflected the high costs of tuition at colleges now a day. Middle class and upper middle class families are being forced to take out student loans.

I’m not going to refute your point either that these Chinese students are paying top dollar to get in here.

          • I have failed to my point clear. SUCC is in the education business, and has every right to demand tuition. The Chinese are diligent students and deserve their opportunity. But SUCC is also located in the middle of a lower economic section of LA where some of it’s citizens deserve the same chance as the Chinese but can’t afford 70k a year or their unwilling to go into life long debt to obtain an education. SUCC should be helping more of its disadvantaged constituents obtain the education they can’t afford in local neighborhood. Two year SUCC full scholarships would really help i.e. Two yrs Jr. College, then Two years at SUCC.

          • USC us doing more than you may be aware of for the community. As one poster made reference to in this thread USC offers free classes to its employees and their families, a number of them who are from the neihboorhood.

As I mentioned in another one of my post in this thread; USC has adopted the surrounding public schools into its Family of schools. It offers tutoring and inclass teaching assistance to those schoools the year around
            .

USC also has its Upwad Bound Program that works with minority students from the community:

Part of the university since 1977, Upward Bound is an intensive pre-college preparatory program comprising three components:

            1. The Saturday Academy, an academic support program that meets at USC’s University Park campus on Saturdays from September to May, providing tutoring, academic advisement, college tours, enrichment courses and SAT preparation;

            2. A summer residential program that gives students a real college experience by allowing them to live and take classes on the University Park campus.

            3. Ongoing assessment by an academic adviser who makes weekly visits to partner schools, meeting with students, teachers and counselors to make sure that students are on track academically.

As you mentioned in your post USC is in the education Business and has every right to demand tuition. To ask USC to give 2 yrs free tuition to anyone one with the grades from South Los Angeles would put them out of business. Not to mention cause an uproar from potential students outside the area.
I’m surprise you are railing away at USC after all the news in the media of UCLA’s dwindling enrollment of Black students. Amounting to a hand full more than those on Athletic scholarship.
and FYI. I’m a Black from the hood surrounding USC who graduated from the University with their academic financial asistance.

          • I disagree that two years scholarships would force SUCC in chapter whatever bankruptcy court. Besides, what SUCC charges itself for tuition and what the retail cost of the same education is, I’m fairly sure, substantially different.

I’m not suggesting SUCC everybody in the hood and barrio gets a scholarship. What I’m suggesting is SUCC provide x number of scholarships in 5-7 career specific plans ( i.e. Nursing, Accounting, business, teaching, etc.). A 5 – 7 career plan scholarship would provide amble education for a low income student to prosper in the Neighborhood.

          • But now the neighborhood is predominatly Hispanis as the black community has evacuated for the Inland Empire.

          • Well Johnnie westside white bread they choose to go to a ‘private’ university instead of the fruitopian racist rathole you ‘claim’ you went to – or whatever ‘jc’ you’re still working on your ‘AA’ degree from –

I give you the moron of johnnie west side whitebread – johnnie west side whitebread

          • Seen the uproar over favoritisim for admittance being given to ‘any’ out of state applicants by UC? Funny no mention of that from you – it’s simple economic boyo – non-residents pay more and the declining economic state of the UC budget is a real motivator to ignoring ‘in state’

Maybe UC has the honor of having the most ‘out of state’ admissions in the USA over in-state – that squares the circle on your hypocrisy re. foreign admissions at USC.

Just once admit the bouquet from westwood – shock the world – no – be the Red Sox fan.

          • CommieSUCC reveals his total ignorance and inability to comprehend anything other than large printed words in his Disney comic book collection.

The issue isn’t SUCC’s admission of Chinese students, but that more retail Asian students populations attend SUCC than local students from the Hoods and Barrios. The main reason for this huge inequity is strictly based on the ability to pay 70k a year SUCC tuition.

I have no complaint with whom attends SUCC from out of country.and pays retail freight. My concern is SUCC’s local population is shut out of SUCC education due to lack of funds – a population SUCC claims to serve.

          • UCLA,

As I posted above I believe USC does quite a bit educationally wise for the local population. I believe even more so than the few 5-7 year plan scholarships that you propose.

I believe the over all compreshensive programs that USC has in place that helps thousands of local students, far outweight the assistance provided by the few scholarships you speak of.

I’m serous when I say that. I’m not just attempting to one up anyone. You should really drop by our campus to take a look at these programs.

      • Many of my HS acquaintances who went on to attend SUCC were causal N-word users – in private, rarely in public – mini racist’s as it were. One of the many reasons I’ve never cottoned to SUCC: the University.

        • But just as we all understand Johnnie westside white bread ‘you’ never have or did right Johnnie westside hite bread? Because Johnnie westside white bread that is what your post reeks of “Don’t examine my logic…I’m a grad of bel-air tech and I always tell the the lie that implicates anyone else….

          Right Johnnie

          • Whitebread? The old jokes were that UCLA stood for University of Caucasians Living among Asians, or JewCLA.

          • And now SUCC has the most Asians attending a University in the US. 22, explain why SUCC refused to supply returning Japanese students with their earned scholastic transcripts prior to Pearl Harbor, and the forced confinement camps. There is a classic Kingston Trio live song, with the lyrics that stated “they went to UCRA” that gets polite chuckles.

          • No denial – a truly awful move – what that moment in time and the era of Brice tailor have in common was Von Kleinsmid

          • Indeed, CommieSUCC, many of those C.S. SUCC administrators, who refused to cooperate with the returning decorated Nisei solders, sat out WW II out like Roderick Reagan. You remember Roderick, don’t you CommieSUCC, he had major speaking parts in VD medical training films and the lead in many action packed Hollywood studio dog fights with toy Zeros while strapped into a drugstore cockpit.

          • Lieutenant Reagan was ordered to active duty on 19 April 1942. Due to eyesight difficulties, he was classified for limited service only, which excluded him from serving overseas. His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation at Fort Mason, California, as liaison officer of the Port and Transportation Office. Upon the request of the Army Air Forces (AAF), he applied for a transfer from the Cavalry to the AAF on 15 May 1942; the transfer was approved on 9 June 1942. He was assigned to AAF Public Relations and subsequently to the 1st Motion Picture Unit in Culver City, California. Reagan was promoted to First Lieutenant on 14 January 1943 and was sent to the Provisional Task Force Show Unit of This Is The Army at Burbank, California. Following this duty, he returned to the 1st Motion Picture Unit, and on 22 July 1943 was promoted to Captain.

In January 1944, Captain Reagan was ordered to temporary duty in New York City to participate in the opening of the sixth War Loan Drive. He was assigned to the 18th AAF Base Unit, Culver City, California on 14 November 1944, where he remained until the end of the war. He was recommended for promotion to Major on 2 February 1945, but this recommendation was disapproved on July 17 of that year. On 8 September 1945, he was ordered to report to Fort MacArthur, California, where he was separated from active duty on 9 December 1945.

While on active duty with the 1st Motion Picture Unit and the 18th Army Air Forces Base Unit, Captain Reagan served as Personnel Officer, Post Adjutant, and Executive Officer. By the end of the war, his units had produced some 400 training films for the Army Air Forces.

          • I’ve seen Roderick’s war film spectaculars. the toy Zeros he destroyed are several notches below the production value of a 3 Stooge’s short.

22, do you remember a TV series “I led three lives.” It’s the story of Herb Philbrick, Christian family man, FBI informant, and a Commie Cell member.

It’s my understanding that Roderick either wrote to or phoned, J. Edgar Hoover and volunteered to spy on the red element of the SAC membership; that, Roderick eventually sold out. Mr. Hoover declined Roderick’s help without a laughing.

          • Hey white bread why not tell any here your personal knowledge of your days at ucla – come on do it – while you’re at it keep trolling for fellow leninist-stalinist-maoists that you worship – the hypocrisy of the liberal elite – a school next to Bel-Air and obsessed with mocking one who stays in the inner city

          • CommieSUCC I’m not sporting a Hammer and Sickle like you do. And, now you’re putting words in my mouth. that the best you do CommieSUCC. Mic-key Mouse.

          • You’re an anti-capitalist louse – an ‘occupy Santa Monica’ moron – a leftist

          • So, in a summary of your recent absurd, tedious, alcoholic fueled blog rants – You cupcake, declare w/o shame, I’m “…an anti-capitalist louse.” Over and out CommieSUCC.

          • Yeah boyo that’s what you are – oh BTW any real memories of ucla or is it your usual hate of Troy.

          • Sure you are. You detest the man who ended the Soviet Empire. Yet you love our current president who was mentored by a known communist Frank Marshall Davis.

          • Have you read the Venona Files? You sound like a bad 1970s Woody Allen movie.

          • So Roderick was based during WW II in these war torn cities: San Francisco; Culver City; Burbank; New York City, where Roderick dodged hostile killer pigeons; Culver City; and Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, Ca. It’s incredible Roderick failed to earn several Purple Hearts.

          • You didn’t answer the question, please tell us about your hero BJ Clinton’s Vietnam War heroics.

    • Widney’s spirit is ALIVE AND WELL, at Southern Cal and with the trOXans on this blog!

Thanks, Thai!!! As always you shed welcome LIGHT on this matter!!!

    • Widney’s spirit is ALIVE AND WELL, at Southern Cal and with the trOXans on this blog!

Thanks, Thai!!! As always you shed welcome LIGHT on this matter!!!

    • Good ole bel-air tech is the complete flip of a ‘pc’ rat hole – ‘MECHA’ and all the worthless pathetic ‘ethnic’ studies – even worse the ‘gender propaganda’ studies all of that racist trash is why U-California is going down hill nationally- these extremists chew up budgets as their student govt. votes to de-invest is Israel (remember that sapho crackpot pounding the desk in February?)

        • Then why do you roost johnnie westside white bread? Why johnnie (note I use your preferred ‘fem’ moniker…hmmm fem moniker….hmmm Nancy Pelosi…..hmmm castrated johnnie….hmmm strut your ‘castrado’ self….ohhhh noooo)….

          • CommieSucc, SUCC’s little white cupcake castrado – Nuch, nuch, nuch. Here you are wandering around abusing SUCCster intelligence like a Boom Box turn to max sound.

Who cares that you were a substitute SUCC asst. assoc. Professor of Biology and Jimmy Jones dropped your lousy. class. Yawn x10. You weren’t a teacher, you were a blowhard know-nothing who couldn’t explain anything without screaming and shouting like a chimp in heat. SUCC’s very own “loud, broken car alarm that refuses to reset.”

Once again CommieSUCC, how many of your former students remember you, or care whether you’re dead or alive.

        • He’s right. Many California public high schools quietly had a MECHA club spring up in the 1970s led by a left wing teacher to inculcate the minds of our impressionable Hispanic students in how evil America was and how Alta California must be returned to Mexico. Now the takeover is being completed as our current regime has dropped the pretense of a Southern border.

    • ThaiMex is being pretty cruel in his depiction of the environment at USC till approximately the 1960s. however you dont hear much about any black athletes at USC till that time. It does sort of mirror the general student population at USC till that time.

I hate to say it however USC was negatively referred to as a ‘White Island in a Black Sea” during the 60s. as the Black population surrounded the residential area at that time.

The University’s Black student population was nearly nil I’m sure till about 1960. Im not sure who would have to take responsibility for that.

        • Funny thing is ‘bel-air tech worships woodie’ aka ‘back end of a horse’ – my post is what made note of the absence of A-A athletes but I wouldn’t play your ‘…I’ll be your friend if you don’t back the other guy…’

What did you bring to this discussion save the typical mocking you’re so good at you go ‘girl’ you ‘jonnie westside white bread…’

At least Thai-Mex posted something – you? Nah you’re what you are – trash USC and then go find anyone you can hide behind when your idiocy is called out

          • I very seldom hide CommieSUCC, and never from you. How many of your former students would give you a satisfactory reference. Even better, how many of your former students would care what whether you live or die. You’re so starved for attention, and human contact that you’re willing to argue the same point from three sides. I’m betting you attended SUCC because UCLA rejected as a student.

  4. SO the discussion about Taylor being SC’s first all-american is about racism???…how many all-americans or otherwise, were at other schools in 1925 and they were of his race, and why or why not…did they have any academic admission qualifications back then? HOW many in the other major football schools, like Notre Dame,Michigan, etc…

    • Good question, did f ucla have any black players when they were the teachers college on Vermont?
