Another Alumni Game Update

ALUMNI.GAME.1961Even more information on that USC v. USC Alumni spring game on May 6, 1961 is now available. The alumni won the game, 31-6. That surprises me because one would expect the college players to be in superior shape during the spring. Then again, here is Denver Broncos running back Al Carmichael in an L.A. Examiner photo, on a run for the alumni team. The roster also included Lindon Crow, Leon Clark, Monte Clark, in addition to Marlin McKeever and Mike Henry. Quarterback Frank Hall threw a touchdown pass and run another. The USC team got its only points when quarterback Bill Nelsen intercepted a pass on defense and scored on a 1-yard run.

  1. Surprising?…..Doesn’t experience and what’s between the ears count for something, Scottie?

  2. Why would the score surprise anyone. Back on the day, the NFL Champs consistently beat College All-Stars. Men will beat boys in a physical contest 99 times out of 100. The alumni honed their skills and tolerance for pain lining up against beasts like Gino Marchetti, Art Donovan, Alex Karras, Chuck Bednarik, Ray Nitschke, They also had to play against the likes of Johnny Unitas, Jim Brown, Paul Horning, Frank Gifford, I am surprised it was only 31-6.

  3. Al Carmichael ’52 team was also the player to catch the first TD pass in the ‘new’ AFL…’61 team upset ucla and basically was the team that in’62 won national championship…I was 9 yrs old when I first saw him play…my favorite from the ’52 team, but I still remember all their names, still have the programs ‘pigskin’ previews…great memories
