Petros Papadakis On USC Selling Everything Before Games

Radio host Petros Papadakis weighed on USC’s announcement this week to sell certain “experiences” at football games to season-ticket holders, like charging $1,500 to run out of the tunnel at the Coliseum before the game.

“It does feel a little weird to me to put a price on running out of the tunnel,” Papadakis said. “We were told as players constantly that that was earned as a right. Now that is worth exactly $1,500.

“It feels creepy to look at the menu (of things to purchase). I really thought they were above this kind of style of marketing.”

Petros is a joke. He got in SC because his old man kissed everyone’s rear end. What’s creepy was looking at that awful menu at their diner while pappy was kissing men as a joke in his “entertainment” segment. Made you want to barf. BTW, anyone dumb enough to pay $1,500 to run out of the tunnel should join the cadre.

at least Petros was a player. He has a little bit more insight as to why he doesn’t like the idea.

Here’s the info: Nubs’ real name is apparently Mark Larson and he works for Lee & Associates in commercial real estate (doesn’t own the company). He was on the Board of Counselors of USC’s Athletics (AKA the “fat” Booster Club) and he can be contacted here http://resources.lee-associates [dot] com/asp/user/website/ourpeople.asp (just type in his name). If he denies it and erases links, I’ve got screen captures to prove otherwise.

          • betomas

Nobs is old and doesn’t fully understand how the internet works. He’s made a lot of awful comments on here hiding behind a screen name.

The Garrett defense, plus the Newport connection, plus his insulting letters to the LA Times sports page… I have to admit, betomas has convinced me.

And yet… I can’t help but feel a little sad. There is a little less mystery in the world this morning.

I assume you’ve seen all the same stuff I’ve reviewed online regarding “Codename: MarLar,” but I thought there a couple of interesting things about this press release:

            http://www.realestaterama [dot] com/2013/04/23/lee-associates-names-new-president-to-its-investment-services-group-office-ID020455.html

One thing that was odd this past year was that Nobs started saying he was a Manhattan Beach guy, after years of bragging about Newport. Maybe he left Newport after stepping down from that position.

Second, did you notice that the guy who replaced him is a UCLA grad with a Spanish surname? I bet that chapped his hide.

          • https://www.facebook.com/charles.bucket.3 Charlie Bucket

Larsen replaced by a taco eater?? Who did business in the dreaded I.E.???

Chavez will get a kick out of this.

And now that I think of it, his Despicable comments about the UCLA kid who was hit by car should be exposed to the appro parties. Not by the Cadre of course.

          • betomas

He still lives in Newport Beach. But he wishes he lived in MB. Look, there’s a lot more info that I’m holding onto and not divulging about Mark.

You’re just now catching up on this? It was quite a revelation. Nobs spent a few days denying it and then went silent.

I wondered for years who that guy really was, but it’s one of those things where the truth is always a bit of a let-down compared with the crazy thing you’ve imagined.

Plus outing members violates the anonymous nature of the blog. Unless everyone is required to post their real name address and phone number this isn’t fail to Mr. Larson.

          • betomas

sorry marv. gotta disagree here. Nobs has made some seriously racist and bigoted comments through the years (also as Joe Blow, Fat Booster, etc.) and he left enough bread crumbs behind and a helpful source connected many dots.

But his friends knew him as Joseph Way B. Lowe Normal.

  • Bill Konther

Got to agree with Petros on this one. Very weird. For the few bucks this will raise, better off allowing people who have done something special for the University or the community to lead the team out of the tunnel.

    • Ben Factor

It’s consistent with the direction of our entire society–ever more blatant and ridiculous sound bites progressively debasing the public discourse. We should have seen a problem when Reagan’s campaign manager/strategist/whatever won “Advertiser of the Year.”

The problem is as old as democracy itself, but you’re spot on that the relatively petty sums aren’t consistent with a well-regarded university. You want them to go back to selling the names for new buildings, academic programs, and professorships, right? You recoil from USC selecting the “discounter” market segment.

For USC, it raises the question whether the Coliseum rehab was an overreach at a time when college sports are subject to so many diverse financial pressures.

      • betomas

Sounds like USC could never outright afford the maintenance and upkeep of the Coli without these gimmicks to raise $$ but they are now neck deep in it.

  • http://www.10-commandments.org/ 10 Commandments

I’ve noticed Scott quotes, references, etc. Petros alot. Petros has a personality so therefore he gets on the radio. Scott has little or no personality so he writes a crappy blog….

  • JamestheFin

Petros is too mild with his criticisms. It’s a bloody ‘effin disgrace for Max Nikias, Milktoast Haden, and the Athletic Department to turn USC football into a used car lot.

I can see the tv commercials a la the old Cal Worthington commercials already, ‘IT’S STEVE SARKISIAN AND HIS DOG SPOT!!![Cue Traveler, then start with banjo's and a singer singing, 'If you want to see a football game go see Steve...If you want to see a football game go see Steve...'].

This is so low rent it’s pathetic.

He and his father both got scholarships for playing football at Troy. He (Petros) has taken a college football reputation and has been able to create a niche for himself as an afternoon drive-by host.

Petros and his dad were fortunate enough to get a non-academic scholarship. What is irritating is the school is laying out $1 mil a year for food for all 690+ athletes. Costs keep rising: water rates, electrical, natural gas, petroleum, insurance charges, salaries on and on – the school has chosen to offset a part of that increase by shrewdly marketing ‘participation’ by those that have both the means and the desire to be part of the game day experience. The money raised will be well spent and for the naysayers from others schools sports in 2014 is a business regardless of the cable payout or bowl fees – it is a business.

Programs that mock this move and their respective fan bases will soon realize if the interest is there by a devoted fan willing to pay extra – why not.

Caveat for such – better make sure there is a market otherwise you might be staring at a year from November for that $40 million needed for that overhang on Spaulgin Field I.e. bel-air tech extra scratch can’t stretch that far.

    • Jack B

      Right on.

If USC constituents want to give money to the school for this kind of stuff, more power to ‘em. It’s good fill-in-the-cracks money.

Everything’s for sale in America. Always has been. Always will be. Always. Take note, you’ll be seeing a lot more of this at college campuses everywhere before long. Pays the water and keeps the gas on. Gets lot of free pub. Don’t worry. Those donations will rack up some serious dollars. If you don’t want to pay, it’s none of your business. Big deal.

As far as Papadakis goes, I went to USC when his dad was there. John was a one-man commercial enterprise on campus. He was always hawking his wares around the school, leather goods, etc. Basically, pure crap like I tried to make in Indian Guides. You couldn’t cross Tommy Trojan’s view without having to get by Papadakis (donate to me!, please) and his roadside hippie goods.

Guess John’s son, Petros, has forgotten about his roots.

      • rusoviet

I saw him once on the south side of VKC. He acted like your typical jock with something to prove – a big mouth. He’s still doing it on Petros show on Friday afternoons.

  • UCLA Bleauz

I wouldn’t mind running out of the tunnel with the USC players and coaches onto the field wearing my “Scott Wolf Bleauz” T-shirt……….The crowd would likely go crazy with support…

    • gotroy22

Watching you run would be more entertaining that the game itself…Keeping up with the players without getting trampled might be problematic though.

  • rusoviet

Come to think of it how much does ucla charge to take that tour of the ‘woodie shrine’? They have a ‘docent’ there – maybe one of the non-attendees at bel-air tech knows – that’s their church.

Good for USC! As an outsider but lifelong follower of the team, I don’t view or think of Petros or SW when I think of SC. I do think of a great institution and the best football team around.(I do respect UCLA’s team but got tired of being Charlie Browned in the 90s).
