Player Spotlight: Jim Sears

Jim Sears was a halfback and safety at USC but in 1952 he led the  Trojans in passing (48 completions, 712 yards), total offense (1,030 yards), scoring (36 points) and punt returns (478 yards). He also finished seventh in the 1952 Heisman Trophy results. He played pro football and also spent a year (1959) as an assistant coach at USC. He was also one of the nicest guys to play at USC as anyone who met him would tell you, including me.

  1. Curious no mention of the fellow teammate of Sears who got drafted in 1952 – has the name Frank Gifford.

  2. GIFFORD was on the ’51 team, drafted by Giants in ’52…Sears was injured on the kickoff of ’53 Rose Bowl vs Wisconsin,he did not return to the game;that was my first Rose Bowl and PCC first win over big 10…I enjoy these flashbacks, very much.Rudy Bukich took over as q/b and threw td pass to Al Carmichael for GAMES only score

    • That’s why I noted Gifford was chosen by the NY Giants in the 1952 NFL draft.

Again where is any recognition of Gifford
