Picture Of The Day

Notre Dame USC Football

Here is USC linebacker Greg Slough and All-American tackle John Vella pursuing Notre Dame quarterback Joe Theismann at the Coliseum in 1970. A reader reports that Slough attended San Diego City College and then became a Green Beret during the Vietnam War before he enrolled at USC.

This game is notable because USC upset No. 2-ranked Notre Dame, 38-28. The Irish were 9-0 at the time but lost to the 5-4-1 Trojans despite Theismann passing for 526 yards.

public school owns nothing. they act like they won the Super Bowl the last two years, and in a way they did…..when you beat USC it is a huge deal, because USC is the top dog and always will be. public school won half of a championship 60 years ago, hasn’t won a Rose Bowl in 28 years, and they have ZERO BCS bowls victories in the 15 year period of the BCS even though most PAC12 teams won at least one…..a futile and impotent football history…..But beat USC 2 years in a row and BOOOOM!!! The total absence of any credible football program becomes “we own L.A”. I have always said it to anyone that would listen…..our true rival is Notre Dame (a real team with a real tradition). public school does not deserve to be viewed as our rival.

So Pete Carroll won 1/2 a championship in 2003?

Are you still posing as a USC fan?

You should consider a costume change to Queen Padmé Amidala for the big “When Nerds Attack” Star Wars convention this week.

          • FIGHTONtoVICTORY

You call everyone Star Wars nerds yet seem to know every character from the series. Strange.

        • Porsche018

public school has a 1/2 of 1 championship, and it was about 60 years ago. That’s what I’m saying. I’m also saying I have never been to or posted on any of public school’s blogs, but you on the other hand, frequent USC blogs, created a fake screen name to pretend you’re a USC fan, and post regularly on a USC blog. …..ever notice Notre Dame fans don’t come on here, but public school fans do? Envy makes you do strange things.

          • gotroy22

So our championships in 1939, 1974 and 1978 only count half? See how we lose with that kind of argument, you brainless rah rah?

          • Porsche018

you’re a public school fan, and created the name “gotroy” for yourself……and the brainless award goes to…….

          • Porsche018

not only brainless, but completely delusional too.
UCLA 1939 record of 6-0-4, ranked 7th in the AP poll.
UCLA 1974 record of 8-3-2, finished tied for 3rd in PAC8.
UCLA 1978 record of 8-3-1, ranked 14th in the AP poll.

What kind of championships are those??

That’s why the UGLY trolls come around this blog so much, they’re jealous that they’re not even our biggest rival. Heck, they’re nobody’s main rival. It’s probably how Oregon St. and WSU feel.

Flamer On is on fore with the “Win Nerds Attack Comic Con Convention only days away. This year she wins for best Princess Leia contest for sure!

“Win Nerds Attack Comic Con Convention only days away. is not a proper sentence. Did you mean when? Also, you didn’t close your quotations. Did you graduate high school?

You are so right Yugo, nobody listens to you, ever – for good reason. SUCC’s moldy old FB history will not line up at the Rose Bowl this year against UCLA. SUCC will line a FB team whose #1 offense could not score A TD on a short 60 yard field during their own two-hand touch spring game. SUCCster’s, you just Rah-Rah on to SUCC’s 7-5 2014 season.

    • Go Tama

The Mexicant’s stayed in Mexico back then.

    • UCLA owns LA Football

Rah-Rah history doesn’t win FB games ballyhoo movement. Because last year, UCLA, at the new and modern SUCC mausoleum, slapped SUCC all around their own field, and snapped SUCC’s Hollywood prop sword 35 – 14. It wasn’t even close as the score doesn’t indicate. I hope the two lineman who broke their ankles are healing satisfactorily. Cheers – SUCC goes 7 – 5 this year. LOL.

      • Porsche018

Well at least it was closer than the 50 to 0 score of 3 years ago where public school looked like a junior high school team……I mean 35 to 14 is a 21 point differential, while 50 to 0 is a 50 point differential right? If you are going to bring up how bad of a loss it was, you should also look at the 50 to 0 score, right? Not to mention the fact that 12 of the last 15 years, USC has come out on top. And I will bet you money and take the over on your 7 win prediction for USC. Care to take the wager, or do you have to ask your mommy first?

        • gotroy22

How pathetic, trying to rationalize our losing to the ruins 2 years straight. You give USC fans a bad name, you brainless rah rah.

          • FIGHTONtoVICTORY

how do the ruins lose to the ruins?

          • Porsche018

No rationalizing……public school fan brings up 35 to 14….then 50 to 0 has to be brought up too. I know you want history to start from 2 years ago, and abolish anything that happened before then, but you must remember how bad you felt when you took it 50 to 0…..it was real, it happened. The 12 of the last 15 years happened too.

          • Trogan Fan

Bruin fans need only bring up the current. Triggers MUStT live in the past, because there’s nothing but pain in the now! Remember ON!

My tribute to Olivia newton John….

“I love you….I honestly love you…” (man someone better love this clown before he goes out and ‘dutch acts’ himself).

  • rusoviet

That was the game that blew Parseghian’s gaskets out – he’d come west undefeated and bought into Theismann new way to pronounce his last name ‘Thighsman’.

In the rain too – a lot of rain!

It’s what makes THIS game the most watched and remembered of any intersectional game played year after year – Tom Kelly voice over ‘Godfather part II’ Michael Corelone and Hyman Roth November 1958 with the USC – Notre Dame game on the tv.

Francis Ford Cuppola, a UCLA graduate ‘knew’ what event would bring true authenticity to that moment in time. NFL was still two levels above professional wrestling and the Braves-Yankee WS ended in October – this was the event that the characters and the rest of the USA was watching.

It is so telling how empty ucla’s football legacy is – so let’s pump woodie up….

    • UCLA owns LA Football

Yawn. Too much free volka Putain.

      • rusoviet

I love it man! You’re so screwed up with your hate towards USC it’s breathtaking! Man you could give Cub fans lessons in how far they need to go to reach your level of inferiority.

Go go boyo – worship ‘woodie’ …. that’s the sole relevance you have and the last ‘move’ (with Gilbert) is now approaching 40 years.

        • UCLA owns LA Football

          “Breathtaking,” LOL.

  • Go Tama

Didn’t Theismann throw 7 int’s that day as well ? It did rain like he!! that day.

  • Yale O. Leftwich

Ara’s gaskets blew out and he retired after ND leading 24-0… and the one and only Anthony Davis and SC reeled off 55 points…great game if a trojan fan

    • rusoviet

No amigo that was the 1974 game

      • Yale O. Leftwich

        yes…1974…ND led 24-0…I was there…

        • UCLA owns LA Football

          At the half SUCCster’s, it was 24 – 6 ND. Doh-dee-oat-doh!

          • Yale O. Leftwich

THAT IS CORRECT..AD scored a TD just before the 1/2 ended, and began 2nd 1/2 with a kickoff return for a TD…SC scored 55 unanswered points after ND built a 24-0 lead;it was a very tough game for ND…reminded me of sitting through the 1966 wipeout game, that day my brother and I could not believe what happened.

  • gotroy22

Wait a minute, Garry Bleauz says the ruins are our big rival.

  • TrojanLights

I was soak and wet at that game. It was worth it in the end however.

  • rusoviet

I brought this green/white tarpaulin and when the rain broke in the 2nd half four of us huddled under it – Vella was on fire that day. It made the year bearable after the dominating loss to ucla the week before and the earlier loss to Plunkett and Vataha at the old Stanford Stadium.

Heavy heavy underdogs that day and went out and took it to them – total victory.
