USC Morning Buzz: An Ad Campaign That Makes No Sense

VILLARAIGOSA

Gary Leonard/LA Observed

I was driving through downtown Los Angeles a couple days ago when I saw this billboard. I didn’t know whether to circle back and look again or just wonder what marketing genius came up with this idea?

Why? Because it makes no sense to promote that you are the official bank of USC Athletics with a picture of UCLA graduate Antonio Villaraigosa. The former mayor of Los Angeles did speak to the USC football team once after practice when it was fashionable during the Pete Carroll era, So maybe that balances it out

Neither Banc of California nor USC did much research on this ad campaign obviously. And they don’t want anyone to know about this either.

Nice picture of Villaraigosa’s Little Crack House on the Prairie …….did they turn down your application, Scottie?

    • gotroy22

But no picture of his reporter girlfriend, what gives?

      • UCLA Bleauz

Great point…..That may have been their love shack…….

        • gotroy22

Who has failed the state bar exam more times, Tony Villar or Mike Garrett?

  • UCLA Bleauz

So Wolf… Why isn’t there any outcry from Wang on his blog about this billboard?…Wouldn’t Villaraigosa be viewed as a turncoat by the the folks over at Westwood High?

    • VB

No, we’re just too busy preparing kick your a$$es hard again this year.
speaking of which, how many rushing touchdowns will Hundley score against pUSC this year? 3? 4?

      • UCLA Bleauz

Let’s just worry about the first game of the season, and then go from there, shall we?…….there’s way too much time between now and then, and injuries may play a factor, so lighten up, Vaginal Boi….

      • Jack B

It’ll be fun watching ucla stumble again this year and fail, AGAIN, to even win the Pac-12 championship. Ah, The Rose Bowl in January, where the bruins and Hundley aren’t allowed.

  • john wolcott

I like it. Let the bruins stew in their brew over this if anybody gives a rat’s behind

  • Trogan Fan

Sorry to hear of another life taken at SC.

    • TrojanFan3.0

What’s a “Trogan”, is it dementia related

PS….tell gotroy be can come up for some air

      • gotroy22

        Another dementia rerun by CowPolyFan3.0!

        • TrojanFan3.0

          What a skill set!

          • gotroy22

What a Cow Poly SLO grad!

          • UCLA Bleauz

There’s no shame in graduating from Cal Poly SLO……

          • gotroy22

There is when you pretend to be a SC Fan.

          • FIGHTONtoVICTORY

If only alumni were allowed to be fans, college football would be a very small sport.

          • gotroy22

If only viewers of Star Wars were allowed to go to the “When Nerds Attack” Comic Con Convention in San Diego you would have a better chance of winning as Princess Amidala, FlamerOn.

          • Trogan Fan

In fact, there’s less shame that being a Trogan, yet 3.0 pretends to be a Trojie anyway.

      • Sally Cushing

According to Wookieepedia, “Trogan was a planet located within the Trogan system of the Outer Rim Territories, known for its strong tides, natural beauty, terrible weather, and lush vegetation springing from desolate wasteland. The planet’s residents hoped to turn it into a tourist attraction, in order to compete with rival Berchest, but despite spectacular oceanic activity, the hoped-for tourism never materialized, and the planet’s economy stagnated at a subsistence level.” Does Trogan remind anyone of UCLA football over the years? Trolls, your screen-names and posts are a reflection of who you are in real life.

        • gotroy22

          Golly-Nerd would know about Wookieepedia.

    • gotroy22

Do you have any info on this?

      • Trogan Fan

The guy that came up with this billboard is a USC graduate. Nice crotch kick, dude!

I also said it last night, yesterday and Monday. I’m sure your wife(husband) would disapprove of you stalking someone

        • gotroy22

So why do you recycle the same tired cliches over and over and over again, CowPolyFan3.0? Your harpy wife who actually did graduate from USC could not approve of your juvenile antics. Certainly a graduate of Alan Hancock Junior College can do better.

          • UCLA Bleauz

            So, are you anti-recycling?

          • gotroy22

            How did you guess?

          • UCLA Bleauz

The styrofoam coffee cups on your desk were a dead giveaway……

  • TrojanLights

I wouldnt jump to conclusions Scott. Villaraigosa is employed by Banc of California and the Bank is actually a sponsor of USC Athletics. I wouldnt place a negative spin on the matter. Why not take the high road. Why does everything have to be USC vs UCLA?

Banc of California, announced today a focus on financial literacy in cooperation with the University of Southern California (USC) Athletics department as the company was named the “Official Bank of USC Athletics.” To launch the relationship, Banc of California employees and USC Athletics staff hosted a Trojan’s Kid Corner event at Brittingham Field on the USC campus which engaged more than 100 children from USC partner programs with financial literacy classes, pep talks and sports workstations with USC coaches, as well as the announcement of a 20,000-ticket giveaway to low-income students in the neighborhoods surrounding the campus.

“At USC, we are pleased to partner with a company like Banc of California, that places a significant value on giving back to the communities it serves,” said Pat Haden, USC Athletic Director. “By teaming with Banc of California employees, we will be working together to improve financial literacy for thousands of young people.”

    • UCLA Bleauz

Scottie has a rather myopic view of the world…..thank you for sharing the bigger picture with us and enlightening the masses……

      • gotroy22

You can’t even admit putting a ruin alum on a billboard ad for “the official bank of USC athletics” was stupid? Talk about a myopian.

  • Helen

You’re confused Scottie because you don’t understand marketing. “The Official Bank of USC Athletics” is an endorsement and does not mean all of the Bank’s customers nor advertisement models have to graduate from USC. In fact, the Banc of California paid a pretty penny to USC to obtain that exclusive endorsement. This is how the business world works son.

    • TrojanLights

Exactly Helen. the partnership builds bridges with the surrounding community.

There was a thread last week where a UCLA supporter was bashing USC for not doing enough for the disadvantage in the community. I pointed out to him a number of programs. This is one additional one to add to that list.

On another positive take. One could look at this as another Bruin (Villaraigosa) coming over to the USC side in what we are accomplishing in Downtown and Central Los Angeles. We had already taken the popular L.A. TImes Festival of Books from Westwood.

      • grave soul

I read the article below earlier this week. “This is one additional one to add to that list.”

Yeah…ah, no. I seriously question what trolljans were taught at the university level. I have seen several other examples from sc grads on this blog touting the charity model (i.e. throw donations at the problem, hope it goes away, get a tax write-off) to solve “social ills.”

        That’s so 1950s.

No, seriously, usc will never lay claim to elite status as a university until its grads show some critical thinking skills. Yet, retarded (as in held back) by the fact that so many sc grads are born with a silver spoon in their mouth and have a myopic view of the world, I’m not holding my breath for critical thinking to take hold at the campus down in South LA.

        http://www.scprdotorg/blogs/multiamerican/2014/07/22/17042/banc-of-california-banco-popular-banking/

Now, let’s see what ignorant replies about “disadvantaged” folks come about by sc grads after my post.

        • TrojanLights

No one is throwing crumbs at a problem hoping it will go away. Take the sour grapes out of your mouth. USC has partnered with minority groups in the surrounding community with various programs over the past generation. You have a 1950s mentality. Maybe you need to come down to South L.A. to get a birds eye update on whats happening here. BTW – I have lived in the area all my life and if anything was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth.

The article link you posted represents the normal fears of individuals when a larger owner or bank takes over the lending in an area once serviced by smaller mom and pop banks so to speak. No where in the article have the bank expressed that they would not care for their constituents as Popular Bank had in the past.

Why the need to take the positive gesture that the bank and USC have extended and see it as a bribe or throwing crumbs at minorities?

          • Jethro G Sabbath

Because he is a troll and he is here to provoke.
If USC introduced a new program to greatly benefit orphanages, the first thing the troll(s) would do is try to find the negative in it.

          • gotroy22

No matter what SC does you would support it.

          • Jethro G Sabbath

Is that the criticism you throw at everyone now?

          • gotroy22

No just rah rahs. I had hoped you had a smidgen of discernment. Nope.

Mike, why would you of all people support a man like Tony Villar, who was a leader of the racist, separatist group MECHA that wants to return “Alta California” to Mexico? Because Nikias likes him?

    • Mike 70

Scott has no business sense or understanding of real a world business climate. He is a third rate, hack writer for a fourth rate paper.

  • gouxtroy22

Why didn’t you pull my head up instead of making me wait to see it on your blog?

    • gotroy22

Golly-Nerd is having a massive hangover after a night of frivolity and free drinks in the VIP lounge at the “When Nerds Attack” Comic Con Convention in San Diego. Will this be the year you end your losing streak and win Best Star Wars Costume” 50 and Over, Golly-Nerd?

      • timtrojan

You have way to many battles and very little weapons.

        • gotroy22

You have a big night ahead of you tonight, competing for the Best Star Wars Costume.

      • B.Miller

More Copy and Paste technique I see.. Once the Comic Con is over.. what are you going to use?

        • gotroy22

Once your Miralax loses it’s effectiveness on your IBS what are you going to use, BM?

  • Jack B

Scottie, Research isn’t you strong suit. Stick to what you know, like what shoes should be on statues.

  • Pasadena Trojan

My question is, why is USC banking at a place where they can’t spell the word “Bank” correctly? It must have been a ruin who flunked spelling that came up with the idea for the name of the bank. Silly ruins.

  • Brad Hutchings

Tony Villar is just taking a page out of the Donald Sterling publicity manual. You get your picture associated with good things. It makes up for being a racist scumbag in Sterling’s case. Or an insufferable stuttering and stammering moron in Villar’s case. Tony is hoping to be the first governor of West California.

    • gotroy22

Tony hates white people so that counts. He’s MECHA through and through.

      • Brad Hutchings

I put the call out on Twitter for someone to “Dirty Sanchez” his mug.

  • Toejam For Life

The home of the Trojan slush fund and the official mortgage holder of Reggie Bush’s parents house! Didn’t you just get off a pretty severe probation?

  • WEB_Dupree

If I owned a bank, my advertising would feature a talking dog, bikini girls, a rapping Ronald Reagan lookalike, a dollar bill legally marrying another dollar bill, you name it. We would also pass out free Neuheisel Nickels.

  • CheattheSystem

Kind of like using a player from your crosstown rival in your intro video?

(ucla using John Wayne at the RB…)

  • Violet

That house the mayor owned is in deplorable condition. I wonder who listed the property? Lee & Associates, perhaps?

  • Trogan Fan

laughing at all the trogie angst. Bruins see this for nothing more than what it is – another successful Bruin making some coin. What’s lost here on you fools is that the bank couldn’t even find 2 reputable trogies to grace the billboard. OJ must have been too busy!
