USC assistant coach Berry Shumpert, who coached the jumps, left after only one season to go to Tennessee. His departure shows the growing pains the track program is going through as it tries to demonstrate it can be more than a sprint program.

    Having gone to track meets starting in the early 50’s ,and seeing the great field event athletes and world record holders that were in the SC program,it is hard to watch the demise brought about by the so called ‘equality’ movement by the ncaa;scholarship limitations which ended athletes preferences to attend the school of their choice,SC;there is a direct correlation.Private schools are punished and athletes free choice to attend schools that would offer them a scholarship are a restricted by the ncaa idea of ‘fair’ for public schools,it is another fact, and result of so called political correctness.
