1953 Rose Bowl On Pac-12 Network

KOCH

The Pac-12 Network will air the show “Varsity Days” on Monday at 9 p.m., which is newsreel footage of the 1953 Rose Bowl between the Trojans and Wisconsin. And it’s in color. Here’s USC coach Jess Hill (seated) and the great USC punter, Des Koch, who had a Rose Bowl-record 72-yard punt in the game.

Scott, what type of shoes did Coach Hill wear during the games?

let’s stop with these throwback entries… nobody cares.

Wolfie’s like our TV Guide now.

Very strange because I thought Wolfie wasn’t getting the Pac-12 Network because of carrier contract squabbles. Plus, he doesn’t like Larry, who makes too much money for Wolfie’s taste. Now, Wolfie’s actually promoting the Network. Something’s amiss.

Stop butchering the Germán language if you don’t speak it, beeuch.

I like Wolf’s journey through USC’s history. But if the most memorable play you can reference is a punt, you probably ought to move on to the next game. (Unless of course you are Rick Neuheisel).

Wow! Dissing the significance of a legendary Trojan. I’m sure that dumb-ass punting was not a factor in a 7-0 ball game.

A lot of people don’t remember Jess Hill…I do…and this game…it was a defensive struggle, and I really remember Rudy Bukich taking over for all american Jimmy Sears and throwing the games only td to to Al Carmichael, who remembers the name of the kicker?;I went to all the home games in 1952,and this Rose Bowl,as a 9 yr old…these posts may mean nothing to some, even most, but they mean a lot to me.Wish I could get Pac 12 tv,but comcast does not offer it here. I moved to Va. 10 yrs ago,but of course we get all the others, naturally….thanks again…

    • Tom Oday

You may be in luck soon…Comcast is trying to buy Time-Warner Cable. Sam Tsagalakis was the USC place kicker and Koch the punter (avg. over 51 yds. on 8 punts in ’53 RB). Koch also won the bronze medal (discus) in the 1956 Olympics.

      • Yale O. Leftwich

you even spelled Sam’s name correctly;I forgot about the ’56 olympic discus…I do remember Perry O’Brien winning the shot;Charlie Dumas won the high jump…thanks…
