Nelson Agholor Critical Of His Fresno State Performance

I’ve said that I believe Juju Smith is USC’s No. 1 receiver and Nelson Agholor reinforced it during his own evaluation of his performance against Fresno State.

“I definitly could have done a better job,” Agholor said.

What about his catch after the ball hit his shoulder pad? “I should have caught it the first time,” Agholor said.

  1. Nelson Agholor is the Trojans #1 reciever !
    That is obvious !!

JuJu is a phenom (Add Adoree to the picture) and his “Sky” is the limit. He just might be the best USC “freshman” wide receiver in many years. His size, talent and maturity is unprecedented !!!

But it takes “more” than 1 game to be the Trojan best, both of Agholor’s touchdown receptions were skilled and amazing, he is USC’s most capable and talented reciever until someone else “takes” that away !

And I don’t see that happening this year…

  2. Nelson should have also caught that pass the went through his hands when he leaped high over the defender……no criticism over the bubble screens, Scottie?

  3. Wolfie… he reinforced that he could have done a better job… he admitted he should have caught the ball the first time…. he did NOT “reinforce” to you that JuJu Smith is USC’s No. 1 receiver, even though I agree that he is……

    • It’s very early for anyone to rank a Smith over Agholor.

Hypothetically, you’re DeRuyter. You’re game planning for USC. Agholor is a preseason All-America. You don’t expect Smith to start at all, maybe not to play much at all. What’s your game plan for covering the WRs?

      • You really can’t predict who will be getting the ball from Kessler…10 different players for USC had a reception in the Fresno State game…..Smiths YAC was crazy….4 receptions… 30 yards per touch…..and Cody slightly overthrew him, and he was held by the defender, on a ball thrown to the end zone….

        • Remember, my hypothetical was posed to be answered before the game, not after the game. I don’t think DeRuyter thought: “Sark and his QB (Agholor’s roommate) have no preference where to throw or to whom to throw. I think I’ll position our all-league CB and the second-line-of-defense safety randomly, because that’s as good as any other method.”

It’s possible that’s how it happened. I don’t think it’s the most probable explanation, although I can’t say for sure.

I do think that Stanford may approach things differently from DeRuyter’s approach, having observed how these WRs were used, and having observed Smith with only a smaller CB in front of him. Smith is big and strong like Rogers, but probably a little faster and quicker, among other things.

Sark explicitly said that Agholor lost some effectiveness when tired, suggesting that Agholor will be pulled out on more series, or won’t play special teams, or something of that nature. It sort of fits with Sark stating that he want’s Jackson to log more plays on offense, and that Harris would play more.

Agholor made some errors, mostly around catching the ball cleanly. Lee did that. Woods did that his junior year.

It’s just early to crown the new king.

I don’t think that Farmer had his season-best day.

I don’t think that Telfer had his, either.

Without a doubt, Stanford will put a full-court press on Kessler. What clearly won’t work is letting Kessler get comfortable when he sets to pass.

          • I didn’t completely grasp the context of your original post to be before the game, but after re-reading it, I can better appreciate what you were trying to say….The drop off from our top 2 receivers to the rest appears to be minimal, unlike in recent years…It will take a few games for the team, both the new and older players, to adjust to the up tempo pace of the game, and it was interesting to see the OL rotate in and out of the FS game like bringing in a new line in hockey…..Stanford will be a whole different experience, especially for both the OL and DL…no constant chop blocks at the knees of our DL, just plain old fashioned man-on-man smash mouth football….and their DL won’t always try to simply dance around our OL and finesse their way to the QB..we’ll be able to see just how physical our OL will be, going forward..There will be far few plays in the game, but it will be a physically draining game on both sides of the ball….

    • I’ve got to admit Snarf, there isn’t much a SUCCster won’t stoop too in defense of SUCC FB. Thanks for being truthful.

      • While we’re being truthful, you should admit that your handle doesn’t make any sense when your school has only won the inter-city rivalry game 3 times in the last 14 years, hasn’t won a conference title since 1998, and hasn’t won a Rose Bowl since 1985.

  4. It was only Fresno State, a school not good enough for the Pac-12, who took Colorado….
