“All gas and no breaks, that’s basically how we need to come out and play.”

— USC cornerback Adoree Jackson on what defense needs to do

  1. Scotty, I think it is spelled “brakes” in the context it was spoken. Now, maybe SC didn’t get any “breaks” during the game. Did you really get a journalism degree from SC?

  2. BC exposed the USC defense. USC is lacking Speed from side to side, USC managed well against Stanford and Fresno st, because both those teams run the ball between the tackles. The front seven look clunky and slow..
    where are the blitz packages?
What did sark get rid of Pendergast?

    • A lot of their big outside run plays were the result of mis-direction. SC didn’t necessarily lack speed, they were completely fooled and caught out of position in most cases. They didn’t do a great job of wrapping up either.

  3. Sorry, but Sark has all the makings of the long list of recent failed USC coaches, Tollner, Smith, Hackett, Kiffin. He has a lot of their “qualities”, no halftime adjustments, poor assistants, no plan B if plan A isn’t working, but he can schmooze the media, has USC ties and he knows the local recruiting area, which seems to be the most pressing requirement for USC head coaches these days.

    • First, I just don’t think that is correct about the assistants. The OL coach just left the same position on the 49ers, the DL coach has long experience in that job in the SEC, the DC oversaw sharp improvement at both UW and in his DC job before coming to UW (it was somewhere in the South, I believe), Tee Martin coached Woods, Lee, Agholor, and now Smith/Jackson/Harris. And so on. By what criteria are these “poor assistants”?

Second, I think it’s pretty clear that the most pressing requirement for USC head coaches is to win. Sark oversaw one poor performance, and fans are calling for his head. What leads you to believe that good local recruiting and media savvy will be sufficient? As Kiffin stated, in the end, it’s all about the W’s.

I agree that the strategy, play-calling, and adjustments have been unsatisfactory versus Stanford and BC. Maybe Sark and his assistants can straighten that out, and maybe they can’t. Maybe there is no way to win almost all the games in 2014, even if the coaching is flawless, because of roster issues of one kind or another. Or maybe Sark can’t do it at all, because he hasn’t got the right skill set.

It’s very early to render final judgment. At the moment, I think your assessment is pretty exaggerated, and about some things, kind of incorrect.

      • The poor criteria is giving up 452 yards rushing and gaining only 20 yards rushing to a team that lost badly to Pitt.

    • Classic troll statement. USC can be faulted on many fronts in light of the BC game, but Kessler isn’t one of them. Even “Heisman hopeful” Hundley would be envious of Kessler’s stat line in a losing effort. Elbow On!
