Steve Sarkisian On State Of Program

USC coach Steve Sarkisian was asked today about the identity of his football team.

“We’re three games into this thing. This is a process,” he said. “We knew it was going to be journey. It wasn’t going to happen overnight.”

  1. Here’s the process I’d like to see. Hire a play caller, aka an OC who can call plays better than Sark, who just called one of the worst games in the history of Trojan football.

Since that will never happen, at least stop calling the Trojans a “run first” team. In Sark’s dreams only. The strength of the team is the passing game and great WRs. Our RBs are average. Our OL is below average. Pass to set up the occasional run. Had this been the plan against BC, USC would have won despite its horrible D.

    • How about hiring assistants that are actually good at what they do ? Sark is no different tha Kiffin in this regard, he can’t get quality people to work for him

      • You could be right. I’m told that the USC staff isn’t bad, it’s just not especially good. Kind of like Sark’s rep. He’s not viewed inside coaching circles as a bad coach. He’s viewed as average-to-good, but certainly not a great coach by any means.

        • Don’t we have at least one assistant whose previous job was to be the assistant to the assistant ? Tollner had poor staffs. Smith had a decent staff in the beginning, lost his OC Stobart and we all know how Smith’s term ended. Hackett had crap, Robo wasn’t allowed to spend money for decent assistants. PC had a very good staff and then filled full of adolescent yes men.

And the fact that Sark is viewed as an average to good HC speaks volumes about Haden and his ” search ” for a coach.

          • You’re assuming there were any other guaranteed “great” hires out there. I don’t assume that. I would have liked to see Sumlin come aboard, but I’m glad we said no to Petersen. L.A. is very hard on coaches. Few can make it here. History bears this out. Haden may go down with this ship. And if he does, the chances of USC hiring a “great” coach after Sark aren’t any better than they were pre-Sark. It’s not that easy. Frankly, there are only a handful of great college coaches out there, and 90% of them don’t want to (or simply can’t) coach the USC Trojans for one reason or another.

          • Stinky, occasionally you post a perceptive comment.

Earlier this year, Sark hired an OL coach, who, after six days on the job, abandoned SUCC for a similar job a Alabama.

In addition, SUCC lost a prize SUCC recruit, because the recruit chose to commit to DUKE!

          • When a program like USC loses a big-timer to Duke, you can be sure there wasn’t a damn thing they, or anybody else, could do about it. They’ll fill the gap and are lucky they lost early. That’s one reason why there’s so much pressure on Sark. At USC, you can and are always expected to fill the gap, and everyone, all the fans and all the coaches, know it.

          • What a weirdo. Why would I tell an idiot like you who my sources are? Just because you don’t have any doesn’t mean we’re all in the dark. If you were connected, you wouldn’t be making yourself look stupid.

Any guy who thinks Sark is viewed highly in the coaching community is like you – uninformed.

          • Nice way to avoid my questions with smoke and mirrors. And it’s all because you have no real sources. I post stuff when I hear it. You…you just write in generalities and bs your way through. Who said I think Sarky is viewed highly? He’s skating on thin ice and if he loses today against an inferior osu, he’s gonna feel the heat from the donors. You are a fake.

            #theemperorhasnopanties

          • So the answer is simple: you have have no real sources…you are just a hack. Your reading comprehension leaves much to be desired — I clearly mentioned that he’s already on thin ice.

      • By then Carroll had won a NC or two. Big difference.

And Pete’s team’s always made adjustments in the second half until he filled his staff with people like his son.

Interesting you’re comparing Sark with Pete, when in reality Sark universally reminds people of Kiffin, not Carroll. I’ve got to laugh at that.

    • Plus, it was the DEFENSE that was largely at fault for the debacle at BC – I don’t recall Sark calling those plays. He scored 31 pts, with his calls, last I checked, should have been enough to get a W – get a hold of yourself

      • Ya, USC (supposedly a run first team) gained only 20 yds on the ground, suffered five sacks and should have won. Sure. One of the reasons USC’s D was so bad was because the offense was always punting and our D was gassed.

You sound like Sark. I heard him bragging publicly about the points his offense scored too. Then I heard the opposing winning coach call him confused. I think it was Wolfie who harped on that.

      • Jack doesn’t need to get hold of himself…but U??

** I don’t recall Sark calling those plays. He scored 31 pts, with his calls, last I checked, should have been enough to get a W – get a hold of yourself**

31 points should have been enough to get a W?
Did ;you watch any part of the game?
With 7’42” remaining in the game, we were down by 13 points, having scored only 17 points. At that point in time we began a drive. We threw 9 passes and ran the ball once as we drove for a TD. That’s 7 points of our 31 during panic time. When we got the ball back there were only 3’30” left in the game. We drove for a TD with 9 straight passes and nary a run. Now that is 14 points of our 31 during panic time…a time during which we threw 18 passes and ran only once. Read my lips…”It was too late!” Sark can take his 31 points and stick it where the sun don’t shine. There is a context to the comments of Jack B. Yours and the lame bragging by Kiff, not so much.
Jack B does not need to sit back and enjoy the show. At least he understands the show, such that it is. You owe him an abject apology

        • Thanks for the history lesson Lar, but here’s the deal – I don’t need you to explain the game to me, I have two eyes and don’t need big ol bifocals to help me out, all I am saying is you can’t judge a story in the first three pages, try to LIGHTEN UP – u sound like a Ruin to me.

  2. UCLA is projected to lose this weekend by the experts – I predict PAIN.

UW faces it’s first real test and is projected to lose also.

  3. How about playing to your teams strengths ? You cannot get into a run and gun game with your shorthanded defensive squad, your defense will be run over game after game.

  4. I’m not happy with so many jumping ship but I know that will change …or at least I hope it will. I am not happy with the one jumping two floors, but hey he made a mistake. I am really not happy with the ego calling his own plays, but if he keeps it up he’ll be working in the SEC soon.

  5. Sarkisian is probably wondering what all the heat is about…He is on pace to 7 games easily this season. He is missing the northwest right about now… Southern Cal needs a national caliber coach not some regional retread like Sarkisian…

  6. To have a successful team it’s not about “Pass” or “Run” it’s about BALANCE, both Offensive and Defense !

First of all, try getting an early insight to the style/scope of the OS Defense, how close are the Corners and how wide and/deep are the Linebackers, 4 man line or 3 ? Go at the “weekness’s” early and be ready for a shift !

That says when to Pass, when to Run, or when for a play-action play !!

Either way, get a “Real” feel (Not LaLa-Land Dream-World Instinct) for the game and be ready for your own “Game-Shift” (Half Time adjustments happen for a reason ! ?)

Take your book and flush it, the Game is your book, READ IT…
