George Farmer’s Role In Spotlight

"USC Trojans vs Arizona State Sun Devils Football"

Wide receiver George Farmer was asked today about his role after he failed to catch a pass against Arizona.

“It wasn’t my game,” he said. “I just have to be prepared for when my number is called.”

Farmer was asked if he was ideal for deep passes because he is supposed to be one of the fastest players.

“I know where my game stands,” he said.

USC coach Steve Sarkisian said Farmer “is in the mix.”

“We called a couple of shots from him,” Sarkisian said.

  1. “Farmer was asked if he was ideal for deep passes because he is supposed to be one of the fastest players.”….another leading question by a lame reporter…..so was this YOUR question, Wolfie?…..please be truthful……

  2. Pure & simple, Sarkisian’s game plan was short passes & running plays to control the ball as best they could and keep Arizona’s offense off the field. It took Arizona about 3-quarters to realize Sark was not going to stretch the field offensively which then led to Rich-Rod feeling confident to move everyone closer to the line of scrimmage and stuff the running plays the last 2-times USC had the ball. And Sark did absolutely nothing to counter it and almost lost a 2nd straight game. When is Sark going to put some guts in his playcalling when the game is on the line at the end? He better work on his inhibitions by the time Notre Dame & UCLA comes around!

    • David,

It sure looks as though USC is going to fade on D in Q4. The offense has to keep scoring and/or hold the ball for long periods. Sark probably knows that, but is he managing it well? I agree with you–no. Is improvement possible here? I would think so, and I would think it’s mostly a coaching problem.

Does it seem like Sark reacts effectively to defenses loading the box? I agree with you–no. Is improvement possible here? I would think so, and I would think it’s mostly a coaching problem.

Do an awful lot of passes revolve around catch a short pass and run? Yes. Is that the plan? I don’t know. Is Sark happy with Kessler’s choices on all those passes? I don’t know, but I suspect not.

Is Kessler sometimes missing opportunities to throw longer? I don’t know, but possibly-to-probably.

Is Kessler a good thrower? Despite Sark’s statements, I don’t think Kessler distinguishes himself in that area. But his toughness and maneuverability has won my respect.
On what percent of pass plays do the TEs run routes? I, at least, don’t know, but I wonder.

Does Agholor get targeted when he shouldn’t? I don’t know, but possibly-to-probably.

Does it seem like there is too little use of “series”–plays that start the same, but develop differently? I think so, and I think it’s a coaching problem.

Is Sark stubborn and foolish not to back away from play calling for a couple of games, just to see what happens? I have very little doubt about that, and if I were Haden, I would abandon my tolerant management style to make that happen.

      • Ben, is Sark the game manager he needs to be? If you look at the top programs winning today, their headcoach makes the necessary moves at the right times to make sure his team is within striking distance of winning the game at the end no matter how well or poorly their team is playing. Like you, I think the coaching apsect in game managerment, game communication and even some weak tackling need to be addressed for this team to improve.

        • I thought Haden was too laissez-faire with Kiffin, and things haven’t changed. What has Sark shown to deserve such a free hand? I don’t get the sense that Haden is thrilled. Do you think he speaks candidly with Sark?

It’s as much for Sark’s good as anyone’s. He has tons of media and booster duties, he is under a microscope in L.A., and extra challenges because of the short roster, and he is a self-described non-workaholic. It’s is counter-intuitive to think that Sark Is in the right situation to give full attention to being OC and HC.

Haden should help Sark to help himself.
If Sark doesn’t last at USC, I don’t think he will be in great demand anymore as an HC. There weren’t many tears in Seattle when he left.

    • With his current ranking of the top 25 teams, he is the laughing stock of the media….He passive-aggressively treats USC like garbage by voting inferior teams like North Dakota State and Marshall ahead of them, and even ahead of UCLA, just because they are undefeated and he enjoys being a contrarian, at the expense of his journalistic integrity….

      • Scotty is a tool and neither USC or UCLA is anything but mediocre this year. Tough to keep the interest going.

        • I don’t think either is mediocre. I think the Pac 12 is actually really good and balanced but terrible with PR. Show me another conference that has from top to bottom the QB play that Pac 12 has? With exception of Boston Massacre, Pac 12 has been very good in out of conference play.
