USC Morning Buzz: How Much Difference Would Ed Orgeron Make If He Returned?

I doubt there are many USC fans against the return of Ed Orgeron as an assistant coach. But how much influence would Orgeron have if the defensive scheme remains the same? Can his defensive line make a huge impact if Justin Wilcox’s game plan is to protect the secondary and not blitz much? Or does he need to be defensive coordinator if he returns, which is a position he never held before.

  1. Why would Ed Orgeron return to USC to be dictated to by the likes of a Justin Wilcox ? He probably knows more about defense then anybody else on that staff. I would love to see him return, but a Man of his caliber has a sense of pride, and I’m sure will be in great demand once the season is over.

    • We’ll see about just how much demand there is for a guy who can’t control his temper (proven numerous times), has never in all his years been a DC (wonder why?), was a poor HC at Ole Miss, mostly famous for ripping his shirt off and doing “Wild Boy” imitations, couldn’t beat his two biggest rivals as USC interim HC and is now lobbying to go back to a school at a lesser position and work for a much younger guy who took his dream job away. The only reason Ed is doing this is because of a lack of other great opportunities.

      • I’m sure someone at SC told him this was the way to come back. He wouldnt go this route unless it was a shoe-in.

        • Seems like very bad timing, to announce you’d like to be headed back in L.A. paper shortly before rivalry games. Nice to know some USC coach has to start looking for another job during the holidays. Must make him a real happy camper!

SC can’t stay out of public controversy even during bye weeks and coming off easy wins. Just wait ’till the Josh Shaw shoe drops.

          • We should be thankful Jack that this was unloaded this week and not next or the week after – unlike the old H-E the Times has historically favored bel-air tech for decades

that’s the reason Simers was such a breath of fresh air – he didn’t care who he ragged on (save his twin demi-gpds wooden and scully) everyone was fair game.

          • Agree about the rivalry games.

I do think Ed will get a good job with or without USC.

I don’t think Sark was particularly an improvement.

Despite public remarks, I don’t think Sark will allow it, given Sark’s dwindling fan club. He’d be foolish to do so.

    • Interesting with his wife and 3 sons and a big house in Louisiana, he doesn’t get a job close to home. Maybe when everybody talks like a cajun, it’s not so charming in Nawlins as it is in LA. Still would make a good recruiting coord. and D line coach.

    • Fred Sampson, Trojans terminate Justin Wilcox and BAM, room for Coach O and DC-Pendergast and suddenly the Trojans are formidable again !

But Sark lacks the “brain-cells” to make intelligent adjustments !!

Or any adjustments for that matter…

      FightOn

  2. I’ve stated this from the get go. If Coach O was in charge USC would be 8-1 or 7-2 at the least. Another factor is that aside from Marcus Martin, none of the juniors who left after last season would have. How much better would the defense be with Clancy P. running things along with Uko and Dion Bailey?

    • Martin is now a starter for the 49ers… kids will leave if they believe there is a chance to play at the next level.

    • I love CEO, but you are mistaken. Cookies and bravado are good motivators for a team that is prepared, but CEO showed he wasn’t ready for preparing for elite teams week after week. USC would be 5-4 with CEO at the helm.

But he is the best DL coach in CFB… And he knows how to motivate talent.

      • Problem is, how does Sark coach looking over his shoulder after every loss with people saying, “Get Sark out, put in O.”

As I’m an older guy, I’ve seen this circumstance, relatively speaking, in the work place and it’s never good. Big distraction, often poisonous.

Two other things: Sark has to fire at least one person to make this happen. That doesn’t help his rep among coaches. Also, Orgeron is not the best DL coach in the game, at least not any longer. He’s not as valuable as he used to be. Lots of young people have come up the ranks and would love to take a wack at USC.

O’s position is weaker. Nobody wants him as a HC. Duh.

        • While you’re at it look at the NYJ today – two consecutive years Mark Sanchez took them to the AFC CG – followed by two more years of mediocrity – their former GM decides to bring in Tebow as a publicity stunt is fired – next GM brings in Vick trading Sanchez to the Eagles.

Coach O’s greatest moment was before the ucla game last year – seems Sanchez’s are on the rise after escaping the hapless NYJ

          .

  3. Super sweet move by LA Times and O to seed division in the locker room and nervousness in the coaching staff for the final three games.

He should have just said he’ll be head coach at SCCC after the season Sark puts in.

    • That’s historically always been their m.o. – never a single word nor any investigative effort during the corrupt Wooden years. Plaschke been a ucla flak since he arrived at the Times. I remember the comical outrage by Peter Dalis over Jim Harrick back in the late 90’s for an expense report – contrast that with what was known and ignored in the late 60’s and 70’s but there was no protection offered whatsoever for Tarkanian – the Times is a friend of:

      ucla, NFL, Dodgers and Lakers

BTW – latest rumor has that proposed build of an NFL stadium in Inglewood as moving forward – don’t think the Times is going to like that Farmers Field going down the drain.

    • Seems Kiffin is doing rather well in the job he is well suited for – offensive coordinator for AL.

      • Yes, he can look good at times. All it took was three #1 classes, one #3 class, a full roster, a muzzle, and no say-so about team or game management.

He’s Peter Drucker’s “The Effective Executive.”

        • Yeah but if he’d screwed up at AL everyone would be aware of it – he hasn’t and that’s all Sabin wanted – his skill and nothing more.

  4. It would be fun to invite this guy back so we can kick him to the curb again. Second times a charm.

    • Sometimes you are right – the one person that was most troubled and angry with Orgeron getting the ‘heave ho’ was Jimmah – Mora was so hoping Orgeron would be given the USC HC slot – it meant a minimum of three more years of beat downs for USC

    • Isn’t there a game against Cal in a few days?….and no word about Plattenburg being carted off the field yesterday?….oh, I forgot…. you have to actually ATTEND practice to get this sort of information… or just wait for another beat writer, like Gary Klein, to report it, then copy and paste it….

    • You called your shot…..ask, and you shall receive…… the blessed POLL has now been posted…..

  5. I would love to see Coach O back with the program. But Coach Chris Wilson is no slouch. He came from the SEC (Georgia & Ole Miss) and played at Oklahoma. Where would Coach O fit in now unless it was as D-coordinator?
