USC Morning Buzz: Quick Thought

Does a victory over Notre Dame make up for the UCLA loss? Can a victory over Notre Dame and bowl victory make up for the UCLA loss?

  1. Great question, wolfman!

A: for some schools yes, it would. But with the trOXans delusional self image, some probably still think they are in the playoff race!

The Southern Cal program reminds me of a fat old bag lady prancing around wearing a Miss America tiara on her noggin.

    • ***The Southern Cal program reminds me of a fat old bag lady prancing around wearing a Miss America tiara on her noggin.***

Got’ta admit, at times you are a funny guy who do hava’ way with words.

  2. I also had a quick thought – I recall Trogies suggesting Hundley was a “wanted man” and that the Trogan players were going to lay him out. So, what happened, Trogies?

    • It’s all good – Hundley played very well, he’s a bRuin classic.
You should make him into a statue right at the gates of your 80 yard practice field – think of all of his accomplishments against the Trojans at the peak of unfair sanctions (it’s like beating up your bigger brother while he’s recovering) – it’s something to be remember for bRuins from around the globe.
SC will be back – we are committed to football greatness, as will be a whole slew of incoming talent this recruiting season.
This team needs some presence at Safety and Linebacker positions, which they are seriously lacking.

      • didn’t your pappy ever tell you excuses are for sissies? obviously not, so take from the CADRE, your real daddys!!

GAWD!! you should work for O’Hadden the way you spit out non-stop excuses!! prototypical trOXan!!

        #UnivofShoulddaCouldda!!

        • I really hope Ucla moves on from this win and really does something with this season, not only beat SC – buuuuut, no way to get past Ducks, or even Stanford for that matter, and Mariota looks to be a lock on the Heisman – sooo we are back to the only thing for the boys in baby blue to hang their hat on… it’s ok, I don’t really know how that must feel, but it’s ok.

      • I know, it’s true, SC is committed to great football, as evidenced by the hires of Kiffin and then Siete! Remember on!

      • The 80 yard practice field realy hurt f ucla. Perhaps you Sunshine Pumpers should retire that old chestnut.

    • The plan was to attempt to stop him. Nobody said to ‘lay him out’. That would be a Westwood Hi mantra. Just ask ‘Owns’, the sicko who gleefully revels in injuries to opposing players.

  3. Would two victories in a row make up for UCLA? Depends on the scores. A pair of fifty to nothings wouldn’t be bad.

    • Crushing Fresno State certainly helped raise spirits last year leading into Signing Day in Feb.

      • Yeah, I think we score big on Maryland or Penn State in our bowl game. And who knows, maybe on Notre Dame too. That should leave us looking a lot better to potential recruits than we look today.
(By the way, Marv, one bright spot nobody’s talking about with regard to our safeties constantly being 10 yards out of position against UCLA—-it really cut down on the # of interference calls against us)!

  4. Troll answers put aside, the answer is NO. First it isn’t going to happen the coaching is so predictable even Notre Dame’s coaches can figure a game plan.
My guess is they wait until the soft practice team poops out (late 2nd quarter) by then the card readers will have sufficient knowledge to be able to decode the plays being sent in from the sidelines.
Sark will keep sending predictable plays and be surprised to see the defense at the ready.
Keep Sark and keep losing games we should win.

  5. Considering the fact that Seven Win Sark would finally beat his average and get USC an 8th win, I’d say “sure.”

  6. Speaking of the ongoing “scholarship reductions” excuse, this from Ryan Abraham, a noted Trogie wonk:

Thanks to a few of you who pointed me to ProFootballFocus who has some interesting numbers to look at.

USC only played 6 offensive linemen against UCLA. Damien Mama came in for Khaliel Rodgers for 32 of the 74 plays at left guard. No one else subbed in. We saw Aundrey Walker get 1st team reps this week in practice, but he never played.

Josh Shaw got 27 reps on defense. J.R. Tavai got 16.

Hayes Pullard and Su’a Cravens played all 76 snaps on defense.

Soma Vainuku played only one play in the game. And he got the carry, a critical 3rd and 2 in the first quarter with USC down 14-7.It was stuffed for zero yards.

JD in DC also wrote this in:

twice as many Ucla defenders (6) played 70+ snaps than USC defenders (3). That would seem to undermine the rhetoric that SC’s defenders are forced to play an abnormal number of snaps. Pullard, Cravens, and Jackson played all 76 snaps.

Also, both USC and Ucla had 11 defenders who played 30+ snaps. The difference was that Ucla had eight defenders who played 15 snaps or less, while USC had none on defense.

    Oddly low snap counts:
    Allen- 47
    Shaw- 27
    Pelon- 22
    Tavai- 16
    Pinner- 5
    Vainuku- 1
    Walker- 0
    Lockett- 0
    Hawkins- 0
    Powell-0

    Oddly high snap counts:
    McQuay- 69

    • Does the play where Cravens stood transfixed like a statue while Hundley ran past him for an easy score count as a snap?

    • So your point is UCLA is wasting money on ten/twelve football scholarships each year that could be used on women’s sports?

  7. No. Getting wiped out by the bruins can’t be cured with a simple win over a mediocre Irish team playing cross country away from home. But another Sark loss in the Coliseum to our biggest rival will just cement his “Seven Win” anchor.

The clock’s officially ticking on Sark now. He seems pretty mediocre to a lot of us, though he certainly has his die-hard supporters, who blame it all on USC’s numbers. They’ll also blame a ND loss all on numbers.

Sark’s a very polarizing coach to Trojan fans. He’s obviously getting a pass this season even though he’s basically Kiffin II with a nicer personality. Next year, the heat will be on Sark to show he’s not Mr. Mediocre. If he’s still calling all the plays next year at this time with the same DC, get ready for a major fan revolt unless he’s won 10 games and taken down at least one rival,

    • Agreed. rusoviet wants to brush off the importance of the ucla rivalry but we know that one is personal. The ND rivalry is important but more of a professional one. UCLA is local and personal and it sucks losing three. The only victory we can claim is tagging their bear. At least there is that…

      • Good call. We’ve been officially reduced to Bear Tagging…Can’t remember when I’ve seen USC look worse than last weekend. Of course, I have a very short memory.

      • Regarding the bear tagging, I’m about 70-30 that it was self inflicted. What was written looked like it came from a middle school kid. A little spray paint that can quickly be cleaned up? Previous attacks on the bear have been much more devastating ..OK, not as rad as the ucla copter dumping paint on TT some years ago, but much more than the equivalent of a hasty spray painting of viva la raza on a wall. I usually poo poo most conspiracy theories, but this seems to me to have merit.
If it actually was done by some juvenile supporter of USC, then I have two things to say.
        1) You are bush league for your actions.
        2) You are incompetent!!!!
In both cases you embarrass the university.
Whomever the person(s) in question are, they exhibit zip creativity. Cal Tech would not not allow them within 10 miles of their University. Definitely not up-to-snuff.
It appears to me that the whole incident was nothing more than a weak attempt to give Fig Tech bad PR.

  8. If USC wins Saturday over Notre Dame, it takes a significant amount of pain away because it is Notre Dame our greatest opponent – if we lose whoops! It increases the anger exponentially because of how bad Notre Dame is this year.

Should ucla lose to Stanford that will be equally damning to Mora – not likely but who knows?

    • They are used to being punked by the Indians. We on the other hand are used to a great rivalry with the Irish and should win.

  9. wolfman, you KNOW i love you like a twin brother from another mother…..but why aren’t you covering the huge story about how our injured walk on prevented AARP Bartner and this band thugs from defacing the UCLA logo before the game???

LAT has a great pic of ARRP Bartner crying in protest as our guy blocks him and Timmy trOXan…..so Sugary SWEEEEEEET!!!!

    #TotalDomination

  10. Both Usc and ND are in the same dismal situation- fans upset and frustrated. Sark and Kelly searching for answers.

This is a great made for tv drama on the Lifetime Channel

  11. we Trojan fans know that we are stuck with Sark for 3 years….it sad but we are just going to have to fight on through it. I see no way a Sark coached team will ever get into a Rosebowl….and the sooner he is gone the sooner we can have a chance at building a real team. A scattered win against ND or UCLA might keep Sark around for a 4th year. I will never root for a USC loss…..but I am indifferent either way right now.

  12. UCLA out played us, out coached us and whipped us. It hurt and it stings. But the ones that took the beating were the players. The seniors, and those that will declare for draft, that was it for them and the rivalry.Winnig out will end their college football days with pride and respect. As Kessler said its about the seniors!!Nothing can make up for the bitter loss, and winning out will allow these players to finish the year heads held high.

    • Feel bad for the players. they seem like good , talented hard working guys…..they just deserve better coaching. Really sad for the frosh who will have at least 2 more years of Sark. Recruiting will take a hit too….lots of kids want to come to USC…can’t see any serious player wanting to come play for Sark.

      • Sad for the guys who chose to play for Sark even though they had other options? LOL – not even Mr. T has pity for those poor fools.

  13. It won’t take the sting away of having lost to UCLA for the 3rd year in a row. However, we win against ND and the bowl game and we finish at 9-4 and have some momentum going into next year. If most of the players return next season including the juniors who are draft eligible, we should be favorites to win the Pac-12 South next season.

So yes, it is important to finish strong.

    • Hope you are right, but I’m afraid it will take another year after next for that to come to fruition.

  14. When you go through this thread and bypass the crap from the little kids the trojan fans are pretty united, a win against ND is a big deal, they are our greatest rival. sucla is the crosstown school and they are just there.

  15. NO…one other thing…if you have eligibility to come back and right this ship, and do not..you are not a true trojan…period

  16. Steve Sarkisian’s job is safe for the next couple of years, because Pat Haden actually believes in that scholarship reduction excuse. But I’m sure at some point in time Haden will insist that Sarkisian hires a couple of coordinators before he completely blows him out, but only because he wants to save face.
