USC Morning Buzz: Anthony Davis Remembers Greatest Comeback

It is the 40th anniversary of college football’s most celebrated comeback, the 1974 USC-Notre Dame when the Trojans trailed 24-0 and scored 55 straight points in about 19 minutes.

Tailback Anthony Davis returned the second-half kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown, the most famous play of the game and his career.

“It doesn’t feel like 40 years ago because people keep talking about it,” Davis said. “It’s fresh to me. It’s ironic I go places now at 62 and people still talk about it.”

  1. So, Trogies sitting around today praying UCLA loses. How does it feel to be that sad, Trogies?

    • I am not;bruins earned this title shot ,unlike last time where they back door’ed in…I hope they beat Oregon if they earn that opportunity…it is true I don’t like anything about ucla, except friends who went there, but wasting a good prayer they lose…no way…enjoy the game.

    • Bruin Fan

Well here we go again (though it doesn’t happen often, like every 20 years or so) !

The UCLA Bruins have a chance (slight chance, I mean right now they’re in the Top-16 going after the Final-4, but don’t hold your breath (Unless you’ve held your breath for 20 years before)) to play Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship, winner plays in the Playoff !!

But for UCLA fans that’s about as close as it gets ?

Tell you what, when things do go your way (Because your never makes it to when!) We here at USC will send you pictures of the 2003 and 2004 National Championship Trophies for You to hold, and DREAM, and WONDER about what it would be like to be the Best-in-the-Land and looked up too (Remember, don’t hold your Breath) !!!

If not, I’m “sure” that a picture of the Coaches Trophy from way back in 1954 exists somewhere (If the “camera” had been invented waaaay back in 1954, oops to be more specific, that was 60 years ago, about the time of the Television invention) and can still be used as some kind/sort of consolation ??

So despite y “60” YEARS of depression there’s always hope !

      But again, “Don’t-hold-your-Breath” !!

I won’t, 2003 and 2004 are still fresh in “Everyone’s” mind, at least for those who watch College Football…

  2. That is a game we will always remember;still trying to forget the 1966 one, sitting in the big ‘ol coliseum…and THERE WAS NOTHING THAT WENT RIGHT

    • New Haven – I too was at the Cannae in 1966 – a mere week after Norman Dow took Troy down – Parshegian was crucified in the national media for sitting on the ball against MI St. in that famous 10 – 10 tie and chose to boost his NC claim by annihiliating USC. McKay vowed he’d never lose to Notre Dame (he did actually 1973 but that was the only loss). It was the cold slap of losing both these two games two years in a row that forced him to prepare for the great season 1967 truly was.

  3. Scott, thanks for refreshing us of that great game and season. Sc beat Ara P and Woody Hayes! For the hell of it I you tubed that 1974 game. Let me tell you, those guys were fundementally sound in every aspect; play calling, tackling, hitting, speed, and passing. Just reckless hitting. Now that is what I call a half time adjustment!!!

AD, Ricky Bell, Digs, Haden, JK, and Mosi are the guys I remembered.

AD and Bell are the original lightening and thunder.

Do you guys think this was the best Sc team??

Fellas after Scott’s reminder of 74. Yes we better win.

You tube it guys. It’ll make ya feel better

Enjoy Saturdays game and today’s Ucla game

    • 72 team was better
Bell was a back up to Dave Farmer at fb. Mosi Taputu was a 3rd teamer … how’s that for depth

      • I just googled the 1972 team. I don’t remember much I was 10 living at south firgueroa about 2 miles south of the Coliseum.

What a season!! In 72 they were college footballs “demolition team”. They were way ahead of any other team. I remember at church some young kid said they can beat an NFL team. Yes being 10 I did believe him.

Can’t forget Lynn Swann. My favorite receiver in the NFL.

Let me rephrase- AD and Cunningham: Lightening and Earth Quake.

Can we run the “I” formation against ND? Just one time
