Coach Of The Year

TCU coach Gary Patterson won the Home Depot Coach of the Year Award today and receives it tonight on ESPN’s College Football Awards show. So why didn’t he at least get an interview with USC last year?

  1. Because USC has never gone for the sure thing, the School has a long history of hiring horrible football coaches. They actually think it’s just a plug in position just because they are SC. Minus Pete Carroll, who have they had over the last 30 years ? John Robinson’s first go around is the only one I can think of. Ted Tollner could recruit but had no leadership skills, Larry Smith could coach, but couldn’t recruit, and after he used up Tollner’s players the Team was horrible. And I’m not sure what the issues were during Robinson’s second term, but the Paul Hackett hire after that was also HORRIBLE! ….. he was a control freak, that couldn’t coach or recruit. Ed Orgeron told a story of how he had to practically beg Hackett to give Mike Patterson a scholarship, because he thought he was too short for a DT, Really ? well Patterson ended up being a #1 draft pick for the Eagles. And the jury is still out on Steve Sarkisian, but I’m already seeing signs of a Tollner type of coach(Recruiter without Leadership Skills) . Where does the Athletic administration find these CLOWNS ? UNBELIEVABLE !!!!!

    • How many “sure things” are there out there? Now, you’ve got only two: Saban and Meyer.

Where are all these sure things and how to you get them to leave other big-time programs they love who are paying them very well already?

We took Sark because there were no sure things. Patterson certainly isn’t a sure thing in the Pac-12 and for all we know, he would never even consider coaching in Calif.

I’m simply saying you make it sound like it’s a no-brainer to locate, then sign up a sure thing. If that’s the case, then why has every program in the U.S. gone through horrible experiences with coaches who can’t come close to getting it done?

      • The point last year was they didn’t have to hire a new coach. Coach O did a great job and deserved his shot this year, being the loyal soldier that he was. If he blew it then hire somebody else. This year was not a NC year. This would’ve also given Sark one more year @ Udub to prove that he isn’t 7-win Sark. There was no urgent need to hire unless, as you say Saban or Meyer were mysteriously available.

        • The only mystery about your post is why you want a so-called “loyal soldier” who couldn’t beat ND or ucla to become your HC. I seriously doubt he’ll get a decent HC offer. He’s a good recruiter who’s good with the DLs. That’s it. Never even been a DC. There’s a reason for that. If Sark doesn’t turn out, we’ll move on from him. Same as with Orgeron – who has a more edgy rep and Haden had to be wary of that.

          • The ND game was at the beginning of his “term” and if I remember, they should’ve won. No excuse for the UCLA game. But all things considered, given that he took the team over mid-year, I’d bring him back. There was no urgency to hire a coach last year. Especially as you say, there were no sure things.

          • ND literally tried to give us the game but we wouldn’t take it. Bad sign. Had Haden brought Orgeron back, he’d be stuck with him and his big salary for at least three years. Just ask his agent. Orgeron has always been more of a cheerleader. You know…he thinks feeding ’em cookies is a stroke of genius. Bottom line is, there are no sure things. Outside of Saban and Meyer, I don’t think any coach is a sure thing. If Orgeron had beat ucla, he might have had a shot. But when they crushed him, his candle went straight out, opening the door for Seven Win Sark. Clock’s ticking on Sark now.

    • And Robinson’s first stint was basically riding the wave of John Mckay. From 1980 to the end, not that special.

  2. Wolfian logic again. USC should have hired the following coach of the year just like USC should have hired the assistant coach of the year runner up

  3. Does Wolf remember Patterson’s record in 2013? It was 4-8. Maybe that had something to do with it.

Listen, Scott, we KNOW you hate Sark. Let’s move on…

  4. Because the Rhodes scholar is out of his league when it comes to football. He can’t manage USC and now he’s part of the group of twelve that let in OSU and their pathetic [for this year at least] Big 10 wins into the final 4. If OSU played in the SEC, BIG 12 or PAC 12, they would’ve had more than 1 loss.
Resign already and take your seat at the NCAA. It sure looks like that was your plan all along.

  5. Probably a better question for the university of Texas. I mean Patterson is a better fit there and yet they hired Strong.
