USC Morning Buzz: Marcus Who?

Marcus Mariota

Last week I mentioned how Lombardi Award winner Scooby Wright and All-American center Hroniss Grasu were not offered scholarships by USC. Neither was Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota of Oregon.

But USC was hardly alone on Mariota. Most schools did not offer him (including Washington). And if you need an example of performing under pressure, consider that Mariota had 12 touchdown passes and no interceptions in games against Michigan State, UCLA, Arizona (twice) and Utah.

Remember the knock on USC QB Cody Kessler was only four touchdown passes and three interceptions in four games against ranked teams.

  1. This is definitely one of the more glass half empty posts. Did USC offer James Winston or Johnny Manziel?

  2. Football is not a one man sport and neither is the position of quarterback. If the O line allows nearly instantaneous penetration by the defense, which is what happened in the game against UCLA and other strong opponents, the QB and the flanker and ends can do very little and the QB is prone to interceptions. If the O line is performing well and the ends are open and the QB is missing his targets and throwing intercepts then the rap is on the QB. USC didn’t have the O-line experience nor the depth in physical games. Kessler performed well but at times threw balls a tad too late or too softly trying to make the ball easy to catch for his receivers. I don”t see where Kessler was the reason for the 4 losses in big games.

  3. FYI: Scooby Wright didn’t win the Butkus Award. Eric Kendricks from UCLA won. Wow, Scott, you Trojans are funny. Just rewrite history when you don’t like the facts. Let me guess, the trojans beat the Greeks? LOL.

    • Fact: only one little gutty split NC in football in ’54. No Rose Bowl wins in 30 years. Bridesmaid U can’t win the conference. USC, Stanford or Oregon is always better. Mora’s so-called best team crapped the bed again but the little gutties beat USC and that’s always good enough for Bridesmaid U, the team that never accomplishes anything on the national stage.

      • Says a little about Wolf that he just posts stuff without checking his stuff. A lot of great LB’ers in PAC12 this year. I think that even as a Trojan, you respected Kendricks. At least it seemed that way the other day. He also just won the Lott.

The South will be brutal next year. SC and UCLA look like they each may end up with Top 10 recruiting classes. We will see what the next few years brings. It promises to be interesting. I wish we really were the “little gutties”, because those guys had heart and beat good teams. They wouldn’t have thrown up against Stanford.

        • Wolfie is renowned for making mistakes. Nothing new there. The weird Trolls still love him. Kendricks is very deserving. Yet Hundley doesn’t even look like he’s an NFL guy anymore. Strange turn of events for him. Seems to have really dropped, ala Barkley. Also weird that Mora keeps saying Hundley is a goner, like he’s speaking on his behalf.

        • Old news. Let’s stick with yet another little gutty failure – three losses, Hundley drooping, no conference clout, even Stanford killed you at home. We’re you guys just afraid to get on the field with the Ducks? That’s what I thought.

Problem with Bridesmaid U is you NEVER finish the job. They don’t even let you on your home field in January – only the big dogs can play at the RB then.

          #USC owns the Rose Bowl

          • LOL. 3 losses in a row to the poor little Bruins must really sting ol’ Jackie! Sad part is that it will be 4 next year and there’s nothing Sark can do about it!

          • Ya sure. I’m really hurt by three losses to the also-ran bruins. We had no expectations this year. Depleted team, new marginal coach, lots of frosh starters. Bruins only claim to fame is three wins over USC. Your world always revolves around the Trojans every year. Get ready for Kansas State to kick aorund the Bridesmaid Uers again. little gutties are headed for another crappy bowl experience – that’s your bowl tradition. Yah!

          • I stopped at “new, marginal coach”. Do you somehow think that things will change going forward with that marginal coach? Even you must now understand that SC’s past is WAY in the rear view mirror! LOL.

        • Yet you come back here every day to snore and yawn. The life of an old Troll.

Too bad we’ve hurt you so bad Mr. Troll. May as well bring your blankee over here with you since you’re always snoring. Get a life.

  4. Scottie: so your point is USC should offer every player coming out of high school and see what sticks?

  5. Scott is floundering looking for something to write about. He would rather sit at his desk and peck away as opposed to going to practice and actually find out something new. You can’t offer a scholarship to everyone Scott. I’d say USC does a darn good job on the recruiting trail. Much better at their job than you are at yours.

  6. So USC has elite talent that every coach in PAC 12 would trade with but they do an awful job of recruiting? Scotty logic 101. Also, nothing like taking a shot at Kessler with a story about Mariota winning the Heisman.

    • That’s Wolfian logic at work. I could be wrong, but I think it’s a sign he has a hidden agenda.

      • Didn’t you say Kessler was 4th in the Heisman voting? What happened with that…his name was not even on the list of top 6…

  7. As so often we are “told remember”for Scott has written before…….Marcus, like Scooby are what make sports so great, where once unknown young people excel to great levels, beyond what most believe their potential to be .Marcus was a 3 star out of St Louis HS Hawaii, Washington did recruit him. (Rainbows didn’t) USC the same year had a freshman Matt Barkley returning, and signed a young QB,Kessler. (Who if returns will be one of the Heisman favorite’s)….Congratulations to these and all the players that rose from the ranks of unknown to become great leaders and players in this great sport. And to you Scott for all the two and three start players each year you tell us that we should be looking to sign.

  8. Wow. Talk about thin-skinned and super defensive! Wolf simply makes a FACTUAL comment, and the Trojans swarm like ants, posting dozens of rebuts in a matter of minutes!

What an easy job Wolf has with these traumatized Trojans! He says the sky is blue and watch the ants swarm in rebuttal! NO! It’s Cloudy in Vernon!

    • Why can’t the little gutties win any football conference championships? I know. It’s because you’re Bridesmaid U, the queen of the also-rans.

  9. USC wasn’t perfect in its offers you say? I’m shocked they have gambling in this establishment, Scottie. I guess re: Leonard Williams & Adoree, a blind squirrel sometimes finds a nut, huh?

    • And, to clarify: Sark “recruited the hell” out of Marcus in high school, he said this weekend. So you can blame Kiffin OR give credit to Sark. Can’t go negatively both ways.

  10. why so modest, wolfman, i recall you PREDICTING Mariotta would win the Heisman in your epic pre-season interview with Jim Hill!!!

    classic wolfman, ALWAYS RIGHT!!!

    #WolfLogic

  11. You all are hilarious. Scott is simply saying that several schools in the P12 did not offer Mariota a scholie.
