USC Morning Buzz: How Good Is The Pac-12?

Is the Pac-12 about to have its best season?

If USC, Utah and Washington win their bowl games, the Pac-12 will have seven teams with nine-or-more-wins this season. The Pac-12 had eight wins in 2014 vs. Big 5 conference opponents/Notre Dame.

The Pac-12 is favored in seven of its eight bowl games so it is hardly a stretch to get seven teams with nine victories.

  1. Well USC has elite talent that any coach in PAC 12 would trade with and they had a so so season, so not sure PAC 12 is that good.

  2. Let’s just hope the PAC-12 coaches take these bowl games seriously and not…. like some in the past, feel entitled with little effort on the field but much partying on the sidelines!

    • Josh Rosen, the 2015 #1 QB recruit has early enrolled at UCLA. and will participate in spring FB practice. That looks and sounds to me like a solid, line drive double.

SUCC flipping Duke recruits timmy sounds like a cheap, SUCC 9th inning bunt attempt to break up a UCLA no hitter.

    • Meanwhile, Tim and Scott, in the real world of facts, here’s how recruiting shakes out (caveat–NSD is 6 weeks away):

The SEC now has 5 of the top 10 spots, and 9 of the top 20. This slightly exceeds the SEC’s “average dominance” over the last five years. We have MS and MS State to thank for that, I guess.

The supposedly weak ACC matches the Pac-12 with three spots, although its three average higher rankings.

The old Big 10 has its 2 spots (If Jim Harbaugh were to go to UM, that would be 3 going forward).

The Big 12 has exactly two spots (yet it feels victimized by the NC Playoff Committee).

And for UCLA bashers, AS WAS TRUE ON NSD LAST YEAR, USC is not far ahead at all. (I hate when trolls get anything right. They’re so boring as a rule.)

      SO, what did we learn?

      1. In terms of talent, the SEC continues to dominate CFB. Complain all you want. If any conference merits 2 playoff teams, it’s got to be the SEC.

      2. The Big 12 schools are unjustified whiners. They let UT push everyone around, until it drove A&M, MO, and NB out. As a result, more Texas talent now plays in the SEC, along with the best players from St. Louis and KC.

      3. The Pac-12 has delusions of grandeur.

      4. Those pesky Bruins ain’t goin’ away anytime soon. (And why would they? Good coaches, good TV money, good geographic location, good school, pretty campus. Sorry, you alums, those are all hard, cold facts. It’s not UCLA’s fault that Haden chose pliability/ affability over excellence.)

      • The one factor you miss is there is bias in recruiting services rating guys on east coast and south higher than west coast. Im not a UCLA basher only do it on this site because of all the turds that hang on here relentlessly bashing all things USC. Mora has done a good job turning UCLA around but he should have with USC on sanctions. The next 6 weeks will be interesting to see if USC gets the next 7-8 guys in 2015 class to really close things out and bring in a top 5 class in recruiting.

        • Tim, bias should be provable via statistics. When I read statistical evidence that fewer 4-star and 5-star players from the East and South become successful CFB players, then I’ll believe it. Until then, it’s just an excuse to me, like the excuses of the Big 12 schools.

A lot of people pooh pooh the recruiting services altogether, i.e., rating stars don’t matter. Well, the statistics put together by Matt Hinton showed that to be false.

Maybe some West Coast writer will follow up on the bias you perceive. So far, none has.

  3. Impressive. By the way, I”m sure this has been discussed, but how the hell did U-dub have 3 AP first team all-americans and not do better in the conference? I know it’s only 3 dudes, but geez, that’s some real talent.

    • The three all play defense (I think). How was UW’s offense?

There are a lot of complaints about Peterson. I don’t know the details of the complaints–unlike my complaints about Sark. But Peterson’s results did give me pause…maybe it’s harder to install a new staff and system than I acknowledge. I see stubborn adherence to preconceived ideas that aren’t working, errors in game/clock planning, lack of adjustments, and dubious preparation of players to understand “down/distance/game situation” priorities. I infer that Sark’s a weak coach. But the Peterson results/complaints raise the question whether my inference is entirely reasonable? Hmmm?

  4. As I recall the Pac-10 was 5-0 in the 2008-09 Bowl season. That was the year USC was kept out of playing for the NC by BCS/SEC/ESPN, because they couldn’t deal with the fact that USC would’ve kicked the crap out of little Timmy Tebow and Florida. Hopefully, this year will have the same amount of success.

      • Not an excuse. It’s a fact. Speaking of excuses, what’s UCLA’s excuse for being in one big time BCS Bowl game since the 1999 Rose Bowl?

          • Neither is 50-0! Were you dreaming during that game or was it a NIGHTMARE! Hahaha
            #LMAO

          • Just one game BFD, and since then, SUCC, mighty SUCC, has suffered three consecutive, humiliating dbl. digit defeats to UCLA. Tsk, tsk.

That’s why UCLA owns LA Football.

          • Yea you’re right but a least we’re not a ZERO!! AND YOU? Maybe you should change your name to the UCLA ZEROS!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
            #LMAO

    • I agree with you SCgrad! Predominantly the Sec has always tried to play the Big 10 in post season, and the Pac 12 has been kicking their butts for decades! Sure we lose every now and then but predominantly, we’ve owned the Big 10.

  5. No in fact, a SUCC Men’s BB team has not competed in a NCAA final four since 1954. SUCC tradition crawls on.
