Player Spotlight: USC Quarterback Ambrose `Amby’ Schindler

SCHINDLERWith USC playing in San Diego, it’s a good time to recognize former USC great and San Diego High School graduate, Ambrose Schindler. He led USC in rushing, scoring and total offense and was named all-conference in 1937. Schindler also led the Trojans in 1939, and was named MVP of the 1940 Rose Bowl. The 1939 team was eventually recognized by USC as national champions.

Perhaps Schindler’s greatest role was to serve as the stunt double for actor Jack Haley (the Tin Man) in the Wizard of Oz. Schindler, who was born in 1917, is still alive today.

          • Not sure. But it doesn’t matter, because the whole fake 1939 NC award/vote/selection was produced, directed, written, staged and celebrated by Mike Garrett, SUCC AD, for the unmitigated self-glory of SUCC FB, circa 2003- 04.

            Mr. Garrett is now a Jr. College AD in bum f**k Oklahoma.

          • I just googled SC football record and they were 8-0-2 that year and played Tennessee in the Rose Bowl! SC won the game by a score of 14-0 and it was the only points given up all year by the Volunteers. It wasn’t recognized until 2004 as “AP” Co- Champions.

            If SUCC wasn’t issued a Library Card NC in 1939, why was SUCC suddenly worthy of a SUCC issued Library Card 1939 NC, 63 years after it wasn’t.

          • SC was ranked prior to the Rose Bowl game against Tennessee #3. They kicked Tennessee’s
            a$$! It was 2 1/2 years that Tennessee hadn’t lost a game! The only points given up all year by Tennessee! As far as I know the “AP” is the associated press!

NICE article on a great trojan football player…the uclans hate SC won BIG bowl games for decades before they did,they waited decades and decades and decades to finally win a BIG one;in fact it was in the mid 60’s they won first Rose Bowl…not sure why they spew such jealous hatred,something about their mentality I guess;glad they are not all that way.

      You whine I’m this and that, I’m jealous of SUCC success etc., etc., etc. But you fail to refute the essential fact, SUCC claims a FB NC it awarded itself. SUCC was so starved for an atta boy and a pat on the head, SUCC’s gentry AD invented a 1939 FB NC in 2004.

      SUCC FB tradition is a mediocre Hollywood invention. If you say something enough times, half wits believe what’s said not what’s true. SUCC FB tradition reminds me of Kobe Bryrant – a legend in his own mind.

      • thanks for making my point,since I made no comment on your idea of 1939,even more clear…if SC is mediocre what is ucla based on your type of logic,which contains zero logic,just emotional spewing of hatred??? by the way,I also compliment many ucla football teams and coaches,including the current one,all the way back to the Red Sanders teams…but you wouldn’t be able to discern any of this…ucla still never won any big bowl game for decades,decades and decades,let alone any national anything…hope you had a merry christmas and happy bowl watching…
