When Does Recruiting Reflect Record?

"0806_SPO_LDN-L-USC-PRACTICE-JM"

USC will probably end up with a No. 1-ranked recruiting class. So how long will it take for the Trojans on-field performance to match the recruiting ranking? Next year? Two years? Three?

Recruiting rankings are subjective and then you need to deal with other factors, like players turning pro early. So how many years does/will it take?

  1. Wolfie, did you just start following college football? And where’s your crystal ball? Two years.

    • Concur, one year of D-1 conditioning and coaching up, break out as sophomores, hopefully stick around for 2 more and dominate as seniors. Only a few Adoree Jacksons that are competitive as freshmen.

  2. Don’t blame yourself for taking some time to reflect on your first point. A number 1 recruiting class? How can that be? Urban Meyer and Nick Saban are college football coaches…. And they were in the playoff while Sark lost to UCLA and failed to finish games. And a number 1 recruiting class for Sark? I don’t get it. It just doesn’t make sense. Wait…. Sark can recruit? Is that the missing piece in this story?? Sark can recruit! I remember this same position about mid-way through the 2000 campaign.. Pete started with his first top 5 class…. Success on the field eventually comes, but you have to develop the players. Success comes, of course, unless you’re Tennessee. They always used to get top 5 classes and never won… I think we need to give this team a chance. Things are building at ol SC….

  3. SBNation cites AL as the Top # 1 regardless of what shakes out two weeks hence with USC a strong candidate but a bit of a distant # 2.

My hope is as the rest hold – a banner breakout next season (7 home and 5 road games). Enough big leads to give Browne or whomever time to play beside Kessler to learn the game. A team finishing in the Top 5 nationally and preparing for the full full year 2016 against AL.

    • Starting with Arkansas Backwood’s and Idaho. So actually Otis, SUCC will playing a 10 game cupcake schedule.

      • Nice job against Oregon today. Guess you planning on UCLA Wining out for that 9-4 record.
        #welcometobottomofpac12

        • marvgoux1 has it right – you’re such a moron – next time check who is playing who boyo – your ‘legacy’ got waxed by 18 pts. by OR we lost by 4 @ OR St..

Now you and the other back end of horses that defecate here because you also seat with that same end enjoy your moment – next year is back to the wood shed for you clowns.

          • So now Clown U losses are so prevalent, Otis has decided to compare Clown U’s BB losses vs UCLA’s by “number of points game lost by” (NPGLB).

What ‘s your problem Otis, Alcohol is much higher at the Bottom of a Barrel. Drink up and black out faster.

          • See below the idiocy of a life this ex-SEIU disability recipient?

woodie the peckerhead – oh come let us adore him for he alone was a coward for he alone got a pass from the entire 4th estate…woodie the peckerhead

          • Can’t operate sober, hence back to dipsomaniac hallucinations and impotent rage. Drink up, Black out Otis.

          • Wow, you just said things you should hear from someone sober. How’d you do it, SUCCee? You amaze yourself, don’t ya? LMFAO!!!

          • woodie the peckerhead….just a lyin’ in that grave with a beeeg smile on his puss – TJ Simers ripped everyone else but sure fell in love with ‘woodrow’s’ ‘corn pone’ demeanor – man the con worked for woodie…oh come let us adore him.

All the respect for Gene Bartow for confronting a monster

        • timmy, andyain’twinning has solidified Clown U’s 1 – 6) stranglehold on the Pac-12 BB hole. Clown U right on bottom of the barrel schedule. Choke on Clownster’s – 71 years and counting – Zero NCAA BB NC.

          • SUCLA FB has ALWAYS been irrelevant. Now SUCLA BB is just as irrelevant. What are you gonna do, SUCCer? Anything? LOL!!!

          • So irrelevant that you appear nightly after your dishwashing gig, and remind me.

That spitball, sounds like you suffer from multiple neurosis’ – maybe excessive anxiety, and a compulsive need to prove you’re other personalities are just as ignorant as the basic petty Spitball simpleton that stutter’s on Wolf’s blog.

          • Hey ugly rents the rosebowl, what are the excuses for the cheating that went on at thug U or 8 Crap U or ugly when Johnny cheetin’ Wooden coached. He was a joke to the house of cards he wrote and probably plagarized from someone else. You, Thug U. and Johnny Cheetin’ Wooden are a sham.

      • Virginia, UNLV, BYU, and no Oregon and Washington. How will you guys ever make it through the season without extra face paint?

      • Will playing??? Is that how SUCLA SUCCsters talk among themselves? Nice goin’, SUCCer!!!

  4. It depends on the QB, so 3 years. Cody will play next year, and then (probably) Max Browne can lead the team to the championship in his Senior Season .

  5. Whoa whoa whoa Scott wolf, how do you know USC will end up #1 in recruiting? Do you know something we don’t, like where most of the undeclared top athletes are committing to? That is pretty much what it will take to overcome Alabama, Florida & Tennessee?

  6. Will Gustin, Marshall, Houston, or Green be announcing before signing day? Any others under consideration if someone flips?

  7. So, all it takes to run this blog is to ask inane questions? Really Scott? This is a post in your blog? Wow.

    • Don’t forget poor grammar/spelling/syntax and no inclination and/or ability to edit/proof read…

  8. Their on field performance will match their recruiting? So like when is USC going to win the National Championship every year like during Pete’s glory run? Uhhhhh, that was a pretty remarkable run that only Alabama has come close to. I mean 3 Heismans in 4 years, 8 straight conference championships, 2 national championships, how many Rose Bowls and Orange Bowls? I’m pretty sure when USC is only down 10 players instead of 20 like next year, they’ll be doing pretty good on the field. Fred Sampsons head is going to explode when USC wins the Pac-12 next year and gets a berth in the Final Four, and I’ve already got my plastic bag ready to pick up all the little pieces of brain and skull. Can’t wait.

    • Half an AP 2003 – 04 FB NC – no more, no less. Tell the truth underpants; or, does truth sting too much?

      • Full AP 2003, Full AP 2004. That’s the longest held national championship naming entitiy in College Football. Does the truth sting? Or burn?

  9. When the coaching matches that of prior great years which means practices that make an offense beat a great defense in practice, and a practice that makes a defense beat a great offense;that way you know you can beat the team you are going to play because they are not as good as those you practice hard against;you will not play better than you practice, for an entire 4 quarters;recruiting matters, coaching matters more.

    • How could the numbers not affect practice? Kessler agreed in one of his interviews.

These sanctions-hampered teams definitely have a number of additional vulnerabilities. It would be nice if Sark accepted that, and his own additional vulnerabilities. He’s a young head coach with the added problem of a weakened team. Both of those facts suggest the need for special attention to head coaching–probably not consistent with personally handling the details of the offense.

The man needs some humility. And he may. I don’t think he’s as insular as Kiffin. He wants to relate to people. I think that’s a large factor in why he’s such a good recruiter.

      The verdict is still out.

      • the question was ,when does recruiting record match coaching record,I answered that accurately…your reply is on a different topic,ie…does being punished(unjustly in this case) by having less quality athletes hamper coaching…it was a good answer to that question;he made, admittedly, too many errors that cost the team wins ,and lacked game time adjustments ,admittedly ,that cost the team wins…his defensive coach was the worst, offense 2nd worst in these errors, and they did not improve…they have 3 full football teams in todays terms,6 teams from my day when you played both ways all game;I hope things improve and people learn from mistakes…ucla is where they are because of their coach, they do not have as good of athletes as SC and then there is Ohio State who manhandled Oregon and their spread option as SC should have ucla…being physical at the point of attack on the line is football,COACHING MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

        • No real disagreement.

Sark is very fortunate to be at a school where your cross-town rivals can crush you three years running, and you still can out-recruit them.

However, I don’t think UCLA has markedly lesser athletes at this time. It lost most battles for the brightest stars, but its recruiting class “averages” have been very close to USC’s for several years. However, it’s fair to state that ASU, AZ, and UT have markedly lesser athletes. Stanford, too. Which reinforces your point: COACHING MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

          So, Sark, make a difference!

          • I know ucla gets good athletes, but they have not consistently been mostly 4-5 stars the last 12 or so years…the ucla coach is superior, like when we went up against Red Sanders in the 50’s;Jess Hill was a great SC athlete and a decent/good coach, but Sanders like Mora a cut above.Maybe Sark will rise and shine,I hope so…this class deserves a great coach.

  10. 2015 will be close, very exciting season. 2016 could be when all hell breaks loose and the Trojans return. When that happens, ALL the little guys from across town will be gone. Your days are numbered. 2015 will be terribly humbling for f ucla. Even the Mex will say nice things. HAWR!!

    • Not all. This Bruin fan is happy to have a good coach for the first time in forever, and a team that doesn’t automatically suck every year. Disappointing year this year to finish #10 without a shot at the playoff, but again, things are looking up in Westwood.

      • You have every reason to be happy about the direction of things. I think Mora will close with at least a few MAJOR national prospects (players that Sark would trade for), and it wouldn’t surprise me if my thinking turned out to be too conservative.

People criticize him for being wound too tight, but it’s typically over things that matter (in life), and I think his players feel his concern for them, and really appreciate that.

        • You nailed it, Ben, especially on the
“being wound too tight” perspective. I love the guy. The players love him. He’s off to the best start of any coach in UCLA’s history (9, 10, 10 wins in first three years).

  11. Player development would be the biggest factor here, because some coaches think their job is done after the recruit arrives on campus. Former UCLA Basketball coach, Steve Lavin is a perfect example , because he would sign top rated classes, but would get knocked out of the tournament in the first round on a regular basis . And his teams would underachieve, and he would win just enough games not to get fired. And with one of the worst football coaching staffs in the Pac 12, I’m hoping this doesn’t happen at USC.

    • Lavin is an excellent comparison to Sarkisian. Great guy, could recruit to heck out of SoCal, but never brought home any banners for Bruin basketball.

      • Time will tell, but I don’t see the leadership skills, and I hope that I’m wrong.

  12. To say the Trojans “will probably end up with a No. 1 recruiting class” is irrationally exuberant, Wolf. Sark and Co. are certainly killing it in SoCal especially, and will most likely finish in the top 5. But right now they are ranked #6 on ESPN, and passing Alabama, who is putting together a class for the ages, will be a tough hurdle to clear. Bama has an unheard of 20 Top 300 players, 3 five-stars, and 24 out of 27 recruits at four-star or better. That’s compared to SC’s 12 Top 300 guys, 0 five-stars, and 14 four-stars.
