USC Morning Buzz: Could Ed Orgeron Ever Return?

Ed Orgeron, Silas Redd

Let’s take a moment to consider USC’s history of hiring head coaches.

Don Clark (1957) was a USC assistant. John McKay (1960) was a USC assistant . John Robinson (1976) was a former USC assistant. Ted Tollner (1983) was a USC assistant. Larry Smith (1987) was a fellow Pac-10 coach at Arizona. Robinson (1994) again. Paul Hackett (1998) a former USC assistant. Pete Carroll (2001) an out of work former NFL coach. Lane Kiffin (2010) a former USC assistant. Steve Sarkisian (2014) a former USC assistant.

So that seems to suggest Ed Orgeron could be a strong candidate the next time USC hires a coach. But would he be considered if he were a position coach at LSU? Does he need to be a head coach somewhere else first? Will he be a hired somewhere else? There didn’t seem to be much buzz for him getting offered a head-coaching job other than some talk about Kansas being interested.

  1. How about we wish CEO well in his new job at LSU.let him continue to enjoy being close to home and family…..And that the word EVER is a long time.
Then with only 5 days left before signing day,we focus on the ever changing recruiting landscape. With Gustin being totally undecided,Marshall a question,Who else are possible surprise recruits? Use those credentials of yours SW,put on your investigative reporter disguise and GET us some good Inside USC info.
OR maybe a new Poll question on what to rename this Blog…….

  2. Another inane post. If Wolfie knew anything about Inside SC, he’d know ED O would never even be considered for a future HC position.

    • Ed O can recruit, but the guy has a very low iq. To be a good head coach you have to have some intelligence.

      • Ed’s a great point man – a fearless, experienced, inspirational recruiter supreme who scores with both parents and potential signees. Also a strong evaluator and DL coach. That’s his gig. Not a coordinator and not a HC. You’re right, but I think he’s smarter than you do.

    • Jack, I am getting concerned about Scott’s brain function.
It’s one non sequitor after the next. Yesterday was Klemm (who declined last year, and extended his UCLA contract). Today is Ed O (hired by LSU 10 days ago).

Not infrequently, I think Scott has a worthwhile point to make. But lately, he is elevating irrelevance to a major motif of his blog. He needs some time off, or an editor.

  3. As much as I wanted Orgeron back in some capacity I don’t think he will be a Trojan again for while. Or when Haden is gone maybe. It’s just not the right fit for him or USC right now. I was a little thrown off how he didn’t finish the season after he didn’t get the head coaching gig. I also understand his feelings were hurt. Still one of the all time great Trojans! But I think we need to move on.

  4. Kiff keeps getting plum jobs because he has the big names backing him up all the time…..wolfman, for the Agin’ Cajun to get back to Southern Cal, it will take a real HEAVYWEIGHT to back his play!! the Cadre feels YOU are probably the only one with the considerable HEFT to make this happen!!!

wolfman, you have held the fate of so many coaches in the palm of you hands…Caesar (you made him who he is), Kiff (you were forced to destroy him), Ocho (jury is still out…but frankly it’s not looking good) and, in the future– the Agin’ Cajun????

    #WhatSayYouWolfman?

  5. He had the makings of being Marv Goux II but Ed chose emotion over practicality. Wish him all the best but if he is a credible HC he would have been selected. His 3 yr. stint @ MS was telling. If he truly wants to be a HC he should take a lower division HC job i.e. being the DC @ LSU is probably his highest possibility at this time. Might come in handy next year when the Tigers face AL and Kiffin.

  6. Wolf, really?? Everyone else is focusing on what’s really happening now and here you are lost in a fog.

  7. What kind of inane logic is this? Maybe Brennan Carroll will be the next HC? If Ed O was not hired at the end of 2013, he is not going to be hired years from now. Sheesh. Another inane Wolf post.

  8. Pat Haden will never get it right, because he has no idea of what to look for in a talented Football Coach, and if you look at the history of the athletic department as USC , it indicates that they have not gotten it correct since the hiring of Johh Robinson the first time around. And prior to that, it was John McKay…Shameful that an institution like SC can never get it right. And it took UCLA close to 20 years to get it right, also , Unbelievable !!!!!!!
