USC Defeats Washington!

A big crowd of 5,529 showed up tonight ($1 hot dogs, popcorn) and USC beat Washington, 70-55, at the Galen Center.

“We should have more conference wins right now,” Coach Andy Enfield said. “We’re competing. We’re getting better.”

The current measure of improvement is that USC has won three conference games (3-14). Last year the Trojans won two (2-16) so I guess Enfield is right that USC is better.

Point guard Jordan McLaughlin underwent surgery on his right shoulder. Once it recovers, he is scheduled to have a similar operation on his left shoulder. McLaughlin’s shoulders repeatedly popped out of the sockets this season.

USC Quote Of The Week

"1227_SPT_LDN_L-USC-NEBRASKA-WL"

USC coach Steve Sarkisian was on the Rich Eisen radio show this week: “I just don’t want to stub our toe anymore. We stubbed our toe a couple times last year. We didn’t play our best football. Most notably, against UCLA. We didn’t play a very good football game. We didn’t play to our capability.”

USC Quarterback Pete Beathard Shows How Tough Position Was

USC vs Wisconsin Rose Bowl 1963

Can you recall the big deal made in games whenever a quarterback throws a block today? Well, that’s USC QB Pete Beathard attempting the goal-line tackle of Wisconsin fullback Ralph Kurek (34) in the 1963 Rose Bowl. And that’s College Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Hal Bedsole (19) also trying to stop Kurek. Players were required to go two ways in those days because of limited subtitution rules and Beathard often started at quarterback because he was athletic and not a defensive liability.

Rev. Hesburgh’s USC Moment

The Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, who served 35 years as president of the University of Notre Dame, died late Thursday night. He was 97. Hesburgh was a national figure and he gave the commencement address at USC in 1968. Also receiving honorary degrees that day were a couple other legends, actor John Wayne and film director George Cukor.

The speech took place the day after Robert Kennedy was assassinated at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Perhaps Hesburgh mentioned it in his speech.

Song Girls History

SONG.GIRLS.1970Here’s an interesting story I heard from a former basketball player: When Bob Boyd was USC’s basketball coach, he said he wanted to have song girls at basketball games. Athletic director John McKay initially resisted but said OK. The song girls turned out to be such a hit that McKay then added them to football games.
