USC Recruiting Class Breakdown

Here are my five immediate impact recruits:

IMAN MARSHALL

Position: CB

High school: Long Beach Poly

Ht./Wt.: 6-2/200

Rivals.com ranking: Five stars, 1 (position, cornerback), 3 (national)

Why he will help: Marshall is a big, physical cornerback who should be able to start at nickel back but could win a position outright once he gets comfortable. He should make a similar impact to Adoree Jackson in the secondary.

ISAAC WHITNEY

Position: WR

Junior college: Riverside City College

Ht./Wt.: 6-4/205

Rivals.com ranking: Three stars, no rankings

Why he will help: Whitney does not have a lot of publicity because he is a junior-college transfer but USC needs to replace Nelson Agholor and Steve Sarkisian wants a tall receiver that fits the mold of former USC All-American Mike Williams.

RONALD JONES

Position: RB

High school: North (McKinney, Texas)

Ht./Wt.: 6-2/220

Rivals.com ranking: Four stars, 8 (position, tailback), 63 (national)

Why he will help: USC is thin at tailback with Buck Allen turning pro. Justin Davis and Tre Madden are the only returning tailbacks, which means a huge chance for Jones to assert himself during training camp.

YKILI ROSS

Position: DB-WR

High school: Riverside Poly

Ht./Wt.: 6-2/185

Rivals.com ranking: Four stars, no position rating, 38 (national)

Why he will help: Ross is extremely athletic and he could start at safety with Su’a Cravens moving to linebacker full time next season. He would also like to play some receiver so he has several ways to get on the field next season.

PORTER GUSTIN

Position: LB

High school: Salem Hills (Utah)

Ht./Wt.: 6-5/250

Rivals.com ranking: Five stars, 1 (position, inside linebacker), 25 (national)

Why he will help: USC might not have openings at inside linebacker but if Gustin is even half as good as the hype, he will get playing time. He probably should wear No. 55 with all the attention he got during his recruitment.

  1. Attention during recruitment does not earn the right to wear No. 55. And, in case you forgot, Lamar Dawson currently wears No. 55. Plus Gustin will most likely be a DE not LB.

    • What makes you think he will go as DE? What I read he has a whole lot of talent. Could be Kesslers replacement too.

      • Gustin could be a “hybrid” Linebacker his 1st year but he is definitely headed towards a Defensive End !

There’s “Kevin Green” written all over Him !!!

        Great Pickup…

        FightOn

  2. HOLY CAT TURDS! Scotty is giving an opinion that is not a complete backhanded shot at one of the coaches, players, administration or anybody that has been associated with the the program. Keep hope alive!

  3. Ugh, I really don’t want to see Cravens at linebacker again. I know he’s great at rushing the passer and creating disruptions in the backfield, but he’s also maybe the best ballhawk we have. Seems like a waste of talent to not have him covering guys, with the occasional safety blitz.

    • Start the three freshmen linebackers, have adoree and iman at corners, and put sua and mcquay at safety – should be good to go!

      • I really like that idea and hope Sark is thinking about moving Su’a back to safety. Of course he needs to get the new kids in camp to see how good they really are.

  4. The math Wolf. You say we have 24. By position we total 23. By state we total 22. By Rankings we total 26. WTF!!

    • It’s that new math, common core, the numbers don’t have to add up, it’s how you feel about it, the emotional process.

  5. Football is becoming like college basketball where you have to reload with freshmen and JC transfers to compete at t the elite level. With so many top players leaving after 3 years we will always be able to lure top talent with the opportunity to play immediately.

  6. Back in the day we would not know who was even on the SC starting team until the first game opening kickoff

Is it possible this whole “up-to-the-minute” system is a little “much?”

    Naah, I am only venting

    • Times have definitely changed. Your #1 recruit has a professionally made commitment video set to music. He hasn’t even suited up yet. Cordell Broadus had his own ESPN show and he probably won’t see much playing time at UCLA.

I hope they can find a helmet big enough to fit their heads.

  7. Helen,
What number is the guy that jumped off the balcony to save his nephew? Is he 86?

    • Your number is 0, it equates to your level of character – now go back to Wang you filthy lowlife

    • Your number is .5 which is:
      – Total number of football national championships UGLY has won.
      – Your IQ
      – Your hourly wage.

  8. coming from Scottie, I don’t believe anything. Unless he is promoting a bar in WEST HOLLYWOOD.
