Radio Rant

A reader alerted me to a blistering rant of a USC fan/booster named Bob Case, who apparently holds the title of IBA boxing vice president, on this podcast, and includes this comment: “I talk to a lot of players around there and people that worked there for years and they said they’ve never heard players complaining around there (like this) about assistant coaches.” The interview begins around the 35-minute mark.

  1. Sounds like an old school guy who thinks things should be done the same old way. That may not work in this day.

    • Is it true that Pat Haden has a Napolean complex and rudely confronts alumni for not supporting Lane Kiffin?

      • Telling Fat Cat Boosters this ain’t 1965, that isn’t rude it’s the facts and they can’t go throwing their money around to athletes. Just because Kiffin didn’t win a NC while on probation some dopes think he’s a lousy coach.

        • To be honest (and I was going to overlook this part because the Bruin trolls who didn’t listen yet will click on it and have a field day, no one has said Pat had a problem with the boosters who were throwing money around to athletes. The issues raised by Pat seem to be that Pat doesn’t like his hires to be criticized (even when they are incompetent and he’s forced to fire them).

As far as his references to throwing money to athletes, we all know that this is part of college athletics. People from PH’s team have went on the record extensively talking about how those teams were being given money.

But I would warn Bruins not to act high and mighty when it wasn’t more than two years ago a booster/agent admitted to pouring money into the pockets of Bruin football players. So they can keep those stones in their pockets.

  2. buhhhhh-BAM!!!!

    he buh-BAM’d O’Hadden something FIERCE!!!

    #ClownCollege

    #LoveThisGuey

  3. I don’t use this phrase but a MUST Listen. Bob Case was about as honest and straight forward as you can get about the issues with Pat Haden.

  4. I like Sark, I don’t like Haden, I like Coach O, I don’t like Lane Kiffin, I like Lindsay Thierry, don’t like Wolf… who cares when you have the #1 Recruiting Class? NOT a SINGLE one of these nobs plays football! Move on, nothing to see here

    • RahRah 4SC is upset that Pat Haden was exposed as a sub six tyrant. You short guys stick together.

      • How do you know Haden wasn’t looking out for the best interest of SC with this dramatic basketball episode amongst friends? You know nothing, period, so how could somebody like even say anything? This guy sounds about as clean as a whale slick

  5. What is this comment about Brian Kennedy paying USC players (39 minute mark)? What’s that all about (hush! hush!) and why is Bob Case mentioning this on the podcast. We all know Kennedy is a big booster, my god they renamed the practice field in his honor.
    STFU!

But the points about Haden…right on the mark.

    • Case said that in a podcast, huh?

There was an article about six months ago in which an anonymous alleged booster an an undisclosed university explained the details of how it’s done, and its impact on college programs. I suspect it’s more prevalent than not at ALL major programs.

John Wooden was as good a coach, teacher, and mentor as ever existed (that’s sure how his players tell it). Yet Sam Gilbert (?) did a lot for many of Wooden’s BB players. I doubt that Wooden was naive about it; he was a smart guy, and had been an athlete himself (the same is true of Haden, no doubt).

Personally, I find nothing wrong with it–another victimless crime targeted by our modern Puritans. But setting the “moral” issue aside, booster subsidies are pretty inevitable, given that most college athletes lack many resources, and want all the good things in life, as most of us do.

It’s surprising that Case, who presents himself as a great friend to USC, would be so indiscreet about it in a podcast.

    • Boosters paying players made me think of an old Jackie Mason joke: “80% of married men cheat in America. The rest cheat in Europe.”

  6. Disgruntled employees, disgruntled players, disgruntled boosters, a power hungry unprofessional unqualified AD, and former players feeling disrespected. Sounds like the basis for an exhaustive , thorough, objective fact gathering journalistic investigation. With a high profile and history laden program like USC I would suspect that at least one of the hundreds of legitimate reporters, local/ or national would love to break such a story. If this is a legitimate story why doesn’t Mr. Wolf go to his editor and pitch the story & acquire the support and resources needed to pursue such an explosive story? Probable answer: the issues present at USC are no greater or no worse than at any major university. So in the absence of seeking out verifiable, supportable and objective findings Mr Wolf will continue to dispense tid bits of innuendo and out of context “facts” in hopes of generating clicks for this blog. Even though this blog rarely delivers any items of value I will continue to come here as my 4th or 5th source of USC news—with any luck I may one day learn something new.

  7. Who is ‘Bob Case’? An official with the ‘IBA’? Man I sure am glad he made Wolf’s list of meaningful sources of commentary….any news from Steve Grady as to what he knows? Point?

Who is ‘Bob Case’? Some pain in the a%% back end of a horse that has no life outside of hanging out and ‘listening’ in to football players that are (what?) 40 years younger than he?

Tell you what all you naysayers of Haden that ‘know’ viscerally they could do a better job – which is what Wolf encourages – what is your point? Garrett was better? Mike McGee? Who? Jo’ Momma strikes back?….I know and we all know – it’s ‘you’ you and your experience as well as insight….you…..you alone…..

The Coliseum is in our thrall – we are primed to host a returning NFL team for two years (anyone but those thieving filthy Rams) at the Coliseum and should a 2nd team come in-bound then the Rose Bowl has a shot.

Bluntly ‘if’ ucla had any influence on the LA Memorial Coliseum the deal would have already been bankrupted and corrupted through gender and ‘sexual preferences’ politics because, after all, the left controls CA and proof of that is the hue and cry in the South Bay over the Exxon-Mobil accident last Wednesday – watch gas prices rise quickly as >10% of local refining capacity is now ‘scotched’.

How I loathe the left and public employee labor unions in particular those worthless fat a%% clowns that haven’t put out a fire in 40+ years but sure know how to run interference for an ambulance or better yet make sure Goodhew Ambulance was wrecked because they wouldn’t ‘pony; up to the bloated corrupt Torrance FD.

Get lost Wolf or better yet go and have dinner with that fat a%% Case

  8. Just more CHEATIN’ from the CLOWN School. Send in the NCAA to take a look at illegal payments by boosters. Time for The Death Penalty?
    fite On!

    • What’s so sweet is as the years go on that gutless fraud queen woodie the peckerhead’s relevance continues to bluntly show the only time bel-air tech had any national prominence is when this white bread clown was the mens bb coach – the gutless peckerhead is the sole point of relevance – there is no ‘there there’ in westwood save the adoration of woodie the peckerhead….whitebread….pieces of melba toast on the top of the basketball rim with some ‘lucky quarters’ a gift of largesse from the ‘wizard’….nellie….woodrow…..jd morgan…..the cover-up…..the stench of cowardice…always the gutless craven leader

      • Only a REAL COWARD picks on a dead guy (lemme know when when some S.c. Brain surgeon has a PUBLIC Elementary School, Post Office and a sports most valuable player trophy named after him). Brian Kennedy (“beek’s” to his friends) gets insulted by the bulbous nosed a.d. for saying the basketball team stinks???? Bob Case says he thinks Phayden has made a couple of questionable hires??? Case says the way Goat Boy was fired (on the tarmac) was classless? Case has a problem with your CLOWN COACH boasting about last season being a tremendous success??? Case went on to say he thought last seasons Soso Cal roster was as good or better than any team in the PAC 12….yet… you drunk incoherent blabbermouth have a problem with the comments by Mr. Case?
Have another drink….this one’s on me.
        IDIOT.

      • Oh, Please, if your going to talk about real cowards then mention the all time champions Super MarioDenelllo and Junior Boom Seau!
With a Boom! and Splat! they took the cowards way out. You can’t beat that! GAME OVER!
I remember Pete’s Missing Coward formation? So Touching. Now he could be two cowards missing! But by honoring the cowards, more will take the coward way. hahahahahhahahah!

  9. Wolfie….this is not a junior program like UCLA. I don’t know who bob case is or where he gets his info. I have never in my life of following USC football heard of bob case. I don’t like Sark but he can say whatever he wants.

  10. To summarize, Bob Case is a USC fan, not alumni, that’s fine. I don’t get people being so involved with a college athletics program if they didn’t even go there. He doesn’t like Pat Haden and blames him for firing Coach O, Pendergast and Ken Polamalu. First, Orgeron quit when he didn’t get the HC job. Pendergast wasn’t retained by Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin fired Ken Polamalu, so he’s misplacing blame altogether. Next Case really likes Lendale White, don’t know why. Seems butt-hurt that Haden asked Lendale to leave the Coliseum floor (with some friendly security guards) for trashing SC in public, which indicates Haden doesn’t want to hear Trojans trashing the program in public. Case claims USC got the #1 recruit class because of the USC brand, not because of coaches or AD. Who does he think is selling the brand to the recruits, a hotline? Sark recruited big time players to Washington when he was there, so he’s good at that job, not to suggest that USC isn’t a much easier sell than UW, but give some credit.

Case is miffed that Pat Haden asked a donor to stop talking iSh about Coach Kiffin while he was still HC, which is not a negative, it’s not a good look to have top supporters of the school trash the program in public. I’m glad Haden isn’t afraid to stand up for the program he is a part of, no matter how rich the guy talking crap is. Haden did the right thing regarding Kiffin, when the time came. Haden made the right decision regarding Orgeron as well, if he were HC material he’d have a HC SOMEWHERE 2 years after leaving SC before their bowl game.

    • I don’t agree and I think that was a mischaracterization of the events and accusations.

People have every right to criticize bad coaching and bad work by the AD. It is obvious that what Pat Haden doesn’t like is criticism that will relate to his job failings. Criticizing is not “trashing SC”. I’m an alum and I don’t “trash SC” when I said Kiffin or Hackett weren’t not coaching well.

It might be mentioned that Hackett and Kiffin brought in top classes to SC too. So it is the brand. And the boosters money that Case was alluding to, truth be told.

Anyway, Haden trying to bully people (and that wasn’t a friendly escort of Lendale nor was it reported to be friendly chat with Kennedy, etc.) is a lack of class. It also fractures a program and makes USC look like it lacks class especially when it is done so publicly.

Re Orgeron, none of know the details but it was clear that he was not offered any position by Pat Haden without having to go through Sarkisian first, and Sarkisian is no fan or Orgeron.

The way Haden let the hiring and firing of Kennedy Polamalu go down was trashing SC, if we really want to use the phrase. The fact that Haden had to fire Kiffin says a lot and the way that it was done looked trashy as well.

The fake convo with Reggie Bush, the slights at Mike Garrett and the way that ouster was handled, the fake pretext of “It pains me to have to take a million dollar year job and I’ll quit ASAP when sanctions come to a close” bull$hit…

Basketball has been handled like it is the afterthought of an afterthought.

But why disagree with a Trojan on a Bruin plagued comment section? I hope Sark takes that stockpile of talent we have and lets it play to its ability. If so, you, me, Haden, Case and everyone else will be happy.

      • 1) Kiffin was hired by Mike Garrett, so that wasn’t a failing of Haden, if you think he’s just covering his own butt by sticking up for the then HC. 2) Haden didn’t have Lendale escorted from the coliseum. Lendale was trying to get into Sark’s post game press conference and security doesn’t allow just anybody to get in and hang out, so they took him out. This happened long after White’s heated words in Pat Haden’s face on the field. 3) Haden doesn’t facilitate the decisions of his head athletic coaches firings of their own staff members. I don’t know how Polamalu was fired by Kiffin, but if it was classless it’s on Kiffin. I know it was stupid, because Polamalu is a great coach. 4) It’s well known that Orgeron heard the announcement that Sark would be the new SC head coach and he went bananas and quit and left. 5) I tried to research the claim that Hackett had great recruiting classes, but I don’t think anyway cared about recruiting then like they do now. I know Kiffin has always been an excellent recruiter as an OC, assistant, and HC. 6) USC basketball? Really? That would make a funny t-shirt. I tried to buy an Emerald Bowl championship T-shirt back in the day, but “USC basketball” could be an even funnier one.

        • Kiffin wasn’t hired by Garrett. Garrett was a lame duck and the committee consisted of Pat Haden, Ed Roski and Jerry Buss. It was reported both here and the OC Register.

And you are also wrong about LenDale trying to get into the post game press conference. The issue, said by both parties was that LenDale had spoken negatively of the coach. But Haden denies that it was him, suggesting that it was someone else (Tessalone) but that he did come over to tell LenDale who by all accounts was in good spirits, fan friendly and enjoying himself, to shut up with his criticism in twitter or not to come to the Coliseum. So you are just winging it here.

I will leave it to anyone reading this and who followed the thing to determine if after Haden came out in a hissy fit (which also happened to the boosters in this very post) that it was anyone else but Haden who had him escorted out. We saw it, it was not near the media room and no one has said he tried to get into the media room.

I’ve already written on the rest. You’re trying to put perfume on Haden’s rump because it stinks but that won’t help. All that can help is that Sark wins some games and makes us forget about all of Haden’s other failures as an AD.

    • So free speech doesn’t apply to the Klownster’s FB program, because emperor Haden thinks it’s in bad form. LOL.

  11. In summary, Bob Case has sketched in a another anecdote or two, perhaps inside detail (or not), regarding what many here have already commented: Haden had no experience in athletic administration, surrounded himself with pals and not pros, and has made plenty of mistakes.

For those who needed Bob Case to point this out, they weren’t watching closely.

Sark will spend at least a couple more years in the job, and we’ll see. Haden is not micro-managing Sark (as best we know), so Sark and his hand-picked assistants will or won’t coach up the talented incoming classes.

Whatever else there is to say would require a lot more investigation than I expect Scott to do, and in fact, no writer is really pressing hard to synthesize a supportable analysis of how things are “really” going, and/or likely to turn out.
