Song Girls History

SONG.GIRLS.1970Here’s an interesting story I heard from a former basketball player: When Bob Boyd was USC’s basketball coach, he said he wanted to have song girls at basketball games. Athletic director John McKay initially resisted but said OK. The song girls turned out to be such a hit that McKay then added them to football games.

  1. When I started coaching at UCLA I complain to administration that the baby blue color made our players look like cheerleaders. I was told there was no budget to consider a color change.

    • John, I know you had 10 National Championships and are to this day the greatest basketball coach of all time, but I forget how many times you beat SC.
      30? 40? 50?

      • Your god lost in 1969 and again in 1970 to the Bob Boyd Trojans, probably the greatest college basketball coach of all time;

        Wooden simply had Alcindor, Walton, Wicks and others.

        You or I could have won big time with those animals

        • YOU???? You couldn’t have done it, because at that time…you still believed in segregation….separate but equal and all that icky stuff.

          a big fight on shout out to you Paralegal.

          • dang it, Thai, whenever you buh-BAM the paralegal, he craps his diaper!!

            where’s that idiot T-Fail??? what the helll are we paying him for?? T-Fail, change that damn diaper!!! we won’t let Goo-Goo brutalize you (if you hurry)

        • First off, they weren’t animals. They were great basketball players. Alcindor and Walton were also Academic All-Americans, FYI. Hardly the definition of an animal.

          Secondly, nobody wins titles without talent. Some coaches can’t win WITH talent, but nobody wins without it. Do you think the Houston team with Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler should have been able to win a title? Did McKay win at SC without talent?

          Thirdly, Wooden’s teams won 5 Titles with Alcindor and Walton leading the way and 5 without a dominant player. The first team did not have a starter over 6’5″ tall. His last team in 1975 was an underdog to a talented Kentucky team. So, you may want to look back a bit.

          Regarding Bob Boyd. He was a fine basketball coach. Upsetting UCLA in 1969 and 1970 was a huge accomplishment. He was the best SC coach in my lifetime.

        • And McKay and JRob had Mike Garrett, OJ, Clarence Davis, Ricky Bell, Charles White and Marcus Allen. What’s your point?

  2. pretty much true…there were no song girls or female cheer leaders ,as I recall, from 1951(first games for me) well into the 60’s or early 70’s…it was considered to not be dignified, back in my dads days at SC,the late 30’s and up until McKay and powers ok’d it…things have changed

  3. Scott, whatever happened to Song Girl Gate. You used to make the Song Girls a regular feature of your blog, just like Pete Carroll. What happened? Were you told by the Administration to layoff the girls after all those scandals?

  4. So Porky, lets talk about the #8 and how you lied about George Farmer leaving because he would have to compete against Whitney for it. The numbers have been issued to mid year enrollees and Whitney Is #15. #wolfsaliar
