USC Quarterback Pete Beathard Shows How Tough Position Was

USC vs Wisconsin Rose Bowl 1963

Can you recall the big deal made in games whenever a quarterback throws a block today? Well, that’s USC QB Pete Beathard attempting the goal-line tackle of Wisconsin fullback Ralph Kurek (34) in the 1963 Rose Bowl. And that’s College Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Hal Bedsole (19) also trying to stop Kurek. Players were required to go two ways in those days because of limited subtitution rules and Beathard often started at quarterback because he was athletic and not a defensive liability.

  1. Hey wolf, bucket would enjoy it if you could post a little about the history of the leather helmet, please

  2. How come none of those guys are wearing NIKE’S???? Plenty of Ridell and Brooks…but no NIKE? Must have been McKay’s little secret.
It could only happen at a place called CLOWN U !!!!!

  3. Kessler played safety at his high school…maybe if he was in there ASU would not have scored on the hail mary.

  4. Scottie paints the past with such positive strokes. He paints the present like it’s Doomsday at USC, everyday. Pathetic.

    • Do you actually think the last 5 years of USC football, basketball, track and baseball have been positive?

  5. Beatherd also teamed up with Bill Nelsen to win the NC in 1962. The length of the game was what prompted the Rose Bowl Committee to install lights as the end was already approaching twlight with WI’s dramatic but failed comeback – USC 42 WI 37

  6. I really enjoy the memories, and that ’63 Rose Bowl also had fog rolling in problems…these were great all around athletes in those days, probably between 45-55 players on the team,do not believe frosh were counted as varsity, they played other traveling frosh teams prior to regular season games…but for an end of season Bowl games some may have been allowed,I don’t recall.
