New offensive line coach Bob Connelly said he wants all three true freshmen starters from last season (Toa Lobendahn, Damien Mama, Viane Talamaivao) to lose weight.
“We’re going to work on leaning them up,” Connelly said.

How about leaning up Scott?
Mama yes, Talamaivao maybe, Lobendahn I don’t think needs to lose weight. This guy better know WTF he’s doing. To be continued!
He did great with UCLA under Karl Dorrell.
I’ve heard that. But he has obviously been to a lot of teams since then. And his last few stops haven’t been popular ones. His line at Oklahoma St. gave up more than 40 sacks.
That was a bit of sarcasm on my part sas. The Dorrell years weren’t exactly full of highlights or decent linemen. I don’t think the Bruins even had one lineman drafted.
I too was being nice. Although some of chumps say he was descent at UGLY.
I am a rabid Bruin fan…but a realist as well. Try to call ’em like I see ’em, even when painful. Overall, I think our staff is better than yours, but it has to be, because SC will usually attract a better recruiting class.
I can’t argue with you at this point in time. A 3 game winning streak surely allows you to think your staff is better. But our staff is pretty good. Now with better players for them to coach up our team and staff will be stronger.
SC has a built in recruiting advantage. We will see how it plays out. SC looks to have the tougher league schedule with the Oregon/Washington combo instead of the OSU/WSU combo, but a lot of questions around Oregon w/o Mariota and UCLA w/o Hundley. Even if SC doesn’t perform as well this year as fans think, it will take another year or two to be fully stocked with players. I am not a guy that thinks Sark is a great coach but we will see how that pans out.
Mora has elevated the UCLA program from where it was but he has yet to get past Oregon or Stanford, so a lot left to prove. You have to at least acknowledge, even with sanctions, that to come back from 50-0 in 2011 to a win in 2012 was unexpected. Certainly, a guy could have made a lot of money betting that at the start of the season. So, a lot to prove yet for both coaches and both staffs.
Very good observation on both teams. We expect to win this season. We can win this season. But truthfully. We are still a year or 2 away from hitting on all cylinders. I think our team can be a playoff team or very well finish with 4 losses. Kiffin lost the locker room that season in 2012. Barkley blamed Kiffin, it was a wreck. Barkley lost some of the locker room as well. Our program has a whole new feel right now. I don’t think that’s the homer in me believing that. But it will be interesting on both teams. Moras done a good job. You being a die hard bruin probably knows that beating SC isn’t enough. Sark is more of a players coach than Kiffin. Ucla has had trouble with Oregon and Stanford. It’s a crosstown rivalry. Both fan bases should be concerned with the whole Pac 12. I honestly believe if Mora has success this year against SC, Oregon, Stanford he will most likely get an NFL job and leave. Still I believe both coaches and teams have much to prove.
No, beating SC alone is not enough. However, after the repeated beatings since the the turn of the century, beating SC felt really good…just a lot more to prove. It is always better to win that game than to lose it. It just isn’t everything.
You’re assuming Scottie accurately quoted Connelly – based on history that’s a bad assumption.
I heard you broke a nail when you heard the Hillary e-mail news, Rachel Maddow of Inside USC.
Cyber Stalker
He is a good coach, He will do a good job !
Is that why he gets fired every year ?
A former High School O line coach slims down Mama. Not likely.
Why is that?….yo Mama have a thyroid problem?
I love fat mama jokes, especically when they are about ugly rents the rosebowls mom. LMAO
Why because people make fun of your family? Monkey see, monkey do.
You got a thing for mamas. I bet if Mama sat on your face 8 Krap, you couldn’t hear the music. Think of it KRAP your very own rosebud.
Scottie: so what was the answer to the question you were going to ask Connelly today (re Tuerk’s ball grip)?
Connelly said he wasn’t going to change Tuerk’s snap. He explained he’s not a “my way or the highway” guy, based on what he learned long ago in his career. Is extremely impressed with Tuerk. Will allow kids to play to their strengths and isn’t used to playing true frosh OLs – likes to redshirt them. Seems relaxed, comfortable and like a good communicator. He never specified who he wants to see slim down. Obviously, way too early to judge how Connelly will turn out. I sense USC’s OLs will like this guy. We’ll just have to see how they progress.
For those of you wondering if Scott reads these posts…he does. He deleted a post of mine on the David Petraeus thread that was up a good six hours. In the post I basically called out Scottie for digging up the tiniest morsal of dirt on USC and being a hack “journalist” along with being allergic to doing research. I also called him a sociopath because only a sociopath would fill his own blog with half truths, misspelled words, and anything remotely negative and feel good about it. In short, Scottie can sure dish it out but he can’t take it. What a loser.
Might I direct your attention to the Comments Policy disclaimer to the right to this thread.
It’s is one large paragraph that even a rapid Gerbil, such as yourself, can understand. The sooner the moderators 86 you the better.
wolfman, is it a conflict of interest for you to put these kids through your Iron Man Boot Camp??
i read that last summer you put a team of Delta Force members through your camp and half of them were puking by the end of the first day, and rest were begging you to accept their DOR’s after the second day.
#IGotNoWhereElseToGo
Reading the stuff that Scott writes, readers here puke everyday. ….
How did the new Cadre recruits come out?
They slept using night lights……
their numbers were off the charts.
Thai broke the obstacle course record, despite the fact he stopped to help a fellow Cadre member get over the last obstacle (12 foot wall). Violet was very grateful, if you know what I MEAN!!
So, Scott…..since you attended practice yesterday, did you see Nelson Agholor, Buck Allen, Damian Williams and Tom Malone?
From another USC beat writer, Dan Weber…
12,000-calorie man ID’ed
As we’d have guessed, the Trojan eating 12,000 calories a day (remember how much they made of Olympian Michael Phelps’ 10,000-calories-a-day diet) is senior center Max Tuerk. And apparently it’s working. “I eat every two hours,” says Max, who has gained more than 10 pounds since the end of the season and should be able to play at the 295 he’s shooting for this season. “It’s an insane amount of eating,” he says. pretty much a full meal every couple of hours.
DON’T GET ANY IDEAS, SCOTT
Is that the Garry Bleauz Diet?
Why would he want Toa Lobendahn to lose weight when he’s barley 295 lbs? he was under size when he signed with USC, and he actually had to bulk up to play offensive tackle last season. It’s no wonder Bob Connelly can’t seem to keep a job, because he already sounds like he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.BTW…Oklahoma State got an upgrade when they replaced him..smh
I agree with everything you said. And Toa isn’t a true tackle as it is. He should definitely get bigger and stronger.
Obviously Connelly wants to repeat the mistake Fade and Cregg made when they had the OL guys slim down. Not surprisingly when it came to 3rd and 1 or 4th and inches they never seemed to convert because of a lack of bulk. Sark just picked up a lackey in Connelly and is following the pattern of Pete circa 2005-2009 in loading up his staff with cronies. This will doom Sark’s career. His only chance to succeed at SC ws having a top notch staff. He had one really good coach in Drevno who left for Michigan. Now he has a bunch of yes men.
