Former USC Assistant Shawn Slocum Returns To Pac-12

Arizona State hired Shawn Slocum to coach special teams and outside linebackers. Slocum was a USC assistant under Paul Hackett and his father, R.C. Slocum, was defensive coordinator at USC and head coach at Texas A&M. Slocum got fired by Green Bay after the botched onside kick recovery against the Seahawks.

Two interesting things here: ASU coach Todd Graham said he wants to improve his special teams, something many teams struggle with (including USC). And Graham does not hesitate to make changes. He moved defensive ends coach Paul Randolph into an administrative role when he hired Slocum and remember he fired current USC offensive line coach Bob Connelly two years ago.

  1. I don’t think that anyone on this blog would disagree that Graham is an excellent coach, despite his inability to stay in one place for more than a few years…….

    • Interestingly, while the Pac-12 has many good football coaches now, none are great. Everyone’s got their warts. Will be interesting to see if one or two can make the leap from good to Nick or Urban status. It’s that final jump that’s so hard to pull off.

      • I had higher expectations of Mike Leach, but it’s gotta be tough to recruit decent talent to Pullman, WA….Rich Rodriguez has done an admirable job, as well, but that final jump is an awfully big one, as you stated …..

        • Notice how Pete Carroll’s Trojans were the only PAC12 team unafraid of the big stage.

Oregon has had two chances to represent the conference like that recently and each time they failed.

          • Exactly…… teams tend to take on the personality of their head coach…. for better, or for worse…..

  2. I would guess that you had a very unhappy childhood Scott. Am I right? When I read your post that is the sense that I get.

  3. This calls Graham’s judgment into question, and makes me feel a lot better about the Bob Connelly hire.

  4. Oklahoma State actually got an upgrade when they replaced Bob Connelly, and is a matter of fact, I do believe Mike Gundy was going to show him the door.
