Andy Enfield Removes MVP Award From Basketball Banquet

SAM.BARRYOrdinarily, the basketball banquet awards would be a fairly uneventful list of award winners. Except Monday night’s banquet did not name an MVP. It’s actually known as the Sam Barry Award. Who is Barry? One of only three coaches in college sports history to lead teams to the Final Four and College World Series. He also coached USC’s football, basketball and baseball teams at the same time. And he created the center stripe and 10-second rule in basketball.

But he never led Florida Gulf Coast to the Sweet 16. So no Sam Barry Award in 2015. USC named an MVP last season when it had a worse record. The rest of the winners are after the jump:

  1. Wolf, Enfield had a bad season but maybe there wasn’t a player deserving of the MVP award. I know it’s your signature move of cracking on SC coaches, but the this was a team without a star player. We had streaky, inconsistent play all year. Why give an award because yo can?

    • are you telling me that on the team of young men, one person wasn’t the best? Every team has a most valuable player, even a terrible trogies team.

      • You obviously haven’t played on an actual team or even played sports. Maybe you have. But the best player isn’t always the MVP. Like saying Hundley is the greatest UGLY QB of all time because he was good enough to rip three off against SC. Why give or say something just because.

        • that doesn’t change the fact that unless each player was exactly equally valuable there was a most valuable player. Should I read the lack of an award to suggest that not a single player on the team had any value at all?

  3. There was no basketball MVP Wolfie. Why is that so hard for you to digest, when it’s an obvious conclusion for anyone who ever watched this wretched team play?

    • Scott also lobbied for participation ribbons for all of the players as to not offend anyone……

  4. Scott, do you really think that Enfield acted alone, without the consent of Pat Haden? Who would YOU have voted for MVP of this years team? And, rest assured, no matter who Enfield would have given the award to, you would have found a way to take the contrarian view, because it’s in your nature…….and the trolls love it

      • It’s kinda funny, actually… in all the YEARS that your beloved Wolfman has been covering USC sports, has he EVER mentioned Sam Barry before this?…it could be argued that if it the wasn’t for this decision not to name an MVP, we probably would have never even known who he was…..but now Scott is OUTRAGED…. this is hilarious….

  5. Even teams that struggle still have an MVP;it seems a little petty to take away something named after someone FOR A GOOD REASON,and traditional…I think it was, unwise, to say the least.

    you NAILED it, wolfman! very TRANSPARENT attempt by Enfield to make a statement! and the statement is clearly: “i got to a sweet 16, it’s these BUMS who can’t play ball….how can i be expected to win, when i don’t even have ONE player who is decent enough to even be CALLED an MVP??”

    oh, Enfield has learned from Ocho well! throw your players under the bus if it deflects attention way from the COACH’S underachievement!!!

  7. Ok Klownsters, SUCC/Andyain’twinning flunked men’s basketball in 2014 – 15. Let’s move on, I’m sick of pointing out the obvious.

        • With a 40 time of 4.35, I think Farmer will be fine…. Ellis McCarthy? Per the experts at the NFL Combine:

          BOTTOM LINE Came into UCLA as a heralded five-star recruit and is leaving school after three seasons with just eight starts including none this past season. McCarthy has size that will plant him on some draft boards, but he lacks skill as a pass rusher and hasn’t proved that he can venture from a phone booth to make plays. McCarthy’s knees will need to be checked closely, but the bigger concern could be his weight problems and whether or not he has the desire to do what it takes to be a player in the league.

          • Sam Bowie went ahead of Michael Jordan in the NBA draft… Tim Tebow was a first round draft pick…woop dee do, Bucket…it doesn’t matter in what round you’re drafted….it’s how your skill set fits in with the system of the team that drafts you and a heck of a lot of luck…….c’mon, Charlie… you’re smarter that that, aren’t you?

    But wolfman saw his dirty trick
    He tried to blame his players but
    wolfman knows that Andy’s the mutt!
    He thought: “if I just point the fingger
    My culpability will surely not linger!”
    But the wolfman was not tossed for a loop,
    He saw thru the ruse and published the scooop!!
