Why Couldn’t USC Run?

USC rushed for 3 yards in 21 carries. Now that includes sacks but if you take sacks away the Trojans rushed for 18 yards. And in goal-line things looked dire.

“We’re going to run the ball well,” Steve Sarkisian said. “That just wasn’t the emphasis today.”

Even if it was not emphasized, USC’s offensive line was mostly intact while the defensive line missed Antwaun Woods and Claude Pelon (not to mention Leonard Williams). It will be better in the fall when a lot more tailbacks are available but it should have been better today too.

  1. Why not ask “why is the USC run defense so good?” You are the one with all the inside info – but looked to me that they weren’t tackling, so why emphasize the run? That would be boring

  2. It was touch football you have to allow tackles to see a running back break them.

    • And Scott knows this. I surmise that he is just trying to instigate a puerile trade of insults between fans and trolls. Perhaps his bosses grade his work performance by the number of comments that he generates?

  3. In the meantime, SC 5 UGLY 0 in baseball today. But since SC won, Scotty isn’t reporting on it, he would rather find negatives in a SPRING football game.

  4. Boring pathetic game. Give it a D- overall. The practices during the week at Cromwell Field had more intensity than this waste of time.
Baseball came through tonight with big win for themselves.

  5. The blogger should know by now that the only thing more scripted than this annual PR event is the DN employed trolls populating the comment section here – cue Roy, Charles, Cerritos Rob et al…

    • Speaking of scripts Golly-Nerd, did My Little Pony script writer Katie Cook and Illustrator Andy Price give you and Jackie-Girl special insights Saturday night at the Megacon comic con convention in Orlando when they discussed their 2 year collaboration on the comic book series?

        • Some say your losing streak at Comic Con conventions is a broken record, Golly-Nerd, but I say you are just that much closer to breaking through with a victory.

  6. the running game failed last year at critical times, guess it is going to be a tough season, usually lots of passing success loosens up the defense for the run blocking ground game…fall camp better be a winner,if they are to have a good year…

  7. and yet the trojie fans here will continue to think they’re a great team because, well, 2005.

  8. Other programs run too much and throw little… in spring games. They tend to showcase their strengths. What Sarkisian is really saying (we will run well) he either has no run game at all right now or the O-line coach he hired hasn’t developed run blocking well enough to showcase it, as it clearly showed itself here.

  9. Steve Sarkisian’s philosophy has never been to run the ball, which is one of the reasons why he settled for an offensive line coach, that no other college team wanted. When Sarkisian was Pete Carrolls offensive coordinator, it was pass pass pass, but when Norm Chow was running the offense with those championship teams, he would always run first.
