Wild Bunch Defensive End Jimmy Gunn Dies At Age 66

GUNN

USC defensive end Jimmy Gunn, a consensus  All-American who was part of “The Wild Bunch” defensive line in 1969, died on Saturday in Los Angeles of heart failure.  He was 66. A service will be held on April 24 at 11 a.m. at Greater St. Luke Church of God in Christ (3195 L St., San Diego 92102).

Gunn was an All-American in 1969 and played six seasons with the Chicago Bears before he retired in 1976 and is a member of the USC Hall of Fame. The Wild Bunch, named after the landmark 1969 Western movie of the same name, consisted of Gunn, end Charles Weaver, tackles Al Cowlings and Tody Smith and middle guards Willard “Bubba” Scott and Tony Terry.

In the 1969 USC-UCLA game, they sacked Bruins quarterback Dennis Dummit 10 times and allowed 2.3 yards per carry that season.

    • FYI: Tomorrow another heavy trojan target is making his commitment Darian Owens from Fresno Clovis. An athlete. Thought I’d let u know since you follow everything SC. I can honestly say I dont know where he is going. Many believe SC, but I’m not to sure.

      • He seems to be leaning toward Westweird, if you read between the lines (he mentioned the abundance of WR’s at USC and his desire to play offense, instead of DB)…. most schools consider him to be a slot WR, but since he is still growing (his listed height has ranged from 5’11′”- 6’1″ and bulking up (190lbs – 200lbs), he may be a straight up outside WR, although USC has him projected as a safety…..

        • Exactly my thoughts. We wanted him at safety and that turned him off. There’s a buffet of WRs this year so we won’t be hurt by this one.

  1. Jimmy was a TROJAN and always will be known as a TROJAN. Rest in Peace and may God Bless you.

  2. The record of those teams was awesome, matched every bit the PC years…they were ‘the wild bunch’

    • Who can argue with you? NC’s in 1962, 1967, 1972 and 1974. Simpson graduated a year before Gunn’s last year. Am I right that Gunn was small for his position?

      • I watched those games,he was extremely quick and about 6′ and 220…not too small for then ,but smaller than average…it was some great football, the cardiac kids on offense and wild bunch on defense.
