USC Morning Buzz: So How Does The Spring Game Attendance Stack Up Nationwide?

USC announced it drew 22,788 at its spring game, which is currrently a respectable 12th among schools that conducted games so far. That is far below the above crowd of 99,391 at Ohio State last weekend. But more interesting is how USC sits right above South Carolina (22,580), which had its spring game a few hours before the Trojans. I’m sure no one in the athletic dept. was aware of this or wanted to best the other USC’s mark. Never.

Now, what will revitalized UCLA draw for its spring game? Can they best 15,000? The readers can debate that. Meanwhile, the current top 20 attendances are after the jump:

School Attendance

1 Ohio State 99,391
2 Nebraska 76,881
3 Penn State 68,000
4 Alabama 65,175
5 Auburn 62,143
6 Michigan 60,000
7 Georgia 46,815
8 Oklahoma 42,807
9 Clemson 37,000
10 Missouri 30,117
11 Louisville 23,187
12 USC 22,788
13 South Carolina 22,580
14 Florida 21,000
15 Florida State 17,250
16 Ole Miss 15,000
16 LSU 15,000
18 BYU 14,000
19 Mississippi State 13,004
20 North Carolina-Charlotte 11,469

  1. So what does this mean, Scott? Is it a reflection of the quality of the team? The loyalty of the respective fan base? Whether other options are available to fans in a given market on a Saturday afternoon? And why the conspiracy theories on USC (SoCal) doctoring the attendance numbers?

    • Clearly it means Urban Meyer is a better coach than Sark.

And note to Scottie: this is USC – what South Carolina does is of no interest.

    • If you look at locations of other schools and their weather that day you would see that it was bad beach day in Columbus and Lincoln,.. Heck even in Columbia SC. The wind blew out the surf…..When you are the ONLY attraction for hundreds of miles, you tend to draw…go Bama.

  2. Ever been to Columbus, Ohio?– The town consists of two dead-like streets and a dirty river running through it. Now, the Ohio State campus is keen and the team is very good, and that is the only thing going on in Columbus from January 1 to December 31.

And, yes, during a game the fans do not sit down and scream the entire time, so I would put them a cut above most other fans as far as maniacal behavior is concerned.

  3. Scott, places like Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Alabama etc, etc, etc, that is all they have going for them! Now let’s see, we have Disneyland , Knotts, and many amusement parks from San Diego to Valencia! We have theaters where you can see plays all over the south land! You can ski and surf in the same day if there is snow!
We that live in Southern Cal have a lot going on all the time! Full lives where we might not see an end of spring practice! Why do you even compare!

  4. In my time we always used the scoreboard to measure teams and not attendance.

    • Too bad the Spring Super Megafest Comic Con used a series of judges for the Best Costume Contest and you failed to win with your Wookie outfit once again, Golly-Nerd.

  5. wolfman, THIS is the REAL REASON HH trembles when you walk by….you MISS NOTHING!!

the visual estimate of the spring game attendance was 9-12,000. the announced number was CLEARLY a lame attempt to overshadow the REAL USC’s amazing show of fan support!!

when the ‘Ol Ball Coach talks, he speaks his mind and people listen.

when Ocho talks, he sweats bullets, says “quite honestly” a dozen times and no one listens.

  6. “revitalized UCLA”

With a head coach that is sniffing the NFL and other college jobs every chance he gets. With a history of coaches lying to recruits. With a new QB, one not recruited by Neuheisel, and probably a true freshman. I can’t wait to see this revitalized 6 win team!

  7. Another question to ponder: How does Wolf’s coverage of USC and sports in general compare nationally? I would suggest dead last in the nation.

    • I can’t think of anyone worse, at least not in a major media market…. but he is very good at what he is expected to do by DN… and that’s generate hits on this blog……

      • two gueys in line at a restaurant:
        “i hate the food here.”
        “me too.”
        “so what are you getting?”
        “The usual!”

        • Similar to Woody Allen’s line in his movie Annie Hall:

Two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of ’em says, “Boy, the food at this place is really terrible.” The other one says, “Yeah, I know; and such small portions.”

Woody: “Well, that’s essentially how I feel about life – full of loneliness, and misery, and suffering, and unhappiness, and it’s all over much too quickly……….”

      • Kraps, name at least 10 other blog writers you’re comparing to Wolf? Facts count Kraps.

  8. I too find it odd that USC can’t attract more people to its Spring Game. I mean, what else is going on? Coachella, Dodgers, Angels, Kings, Ducks, Lakers, Clippers, first beach weather weekend of the year vs watching a non-contact scrimmage . . .

    Hmmm, can’t figure it out.

  9. OOH OOH, I have a guess at how many for Ucla, Scott!!!
They will draw 1 fan, total – Bucket
    Mwwwaaahahahahaaaaa!!!

  10. UCLA fans have a life, usc fans don’t. Ucla fans rather see the Bruins beat the snot out of other schools.
