Here’s USC quarterback Troy Winslow gaining yardage in the 1966 USC-UCLA game at the Coliseum.

  1. TROLL alert!

ucla should have kept the khaki-colored pants. Great unis! They were truly unique in the world of college football, but they threw it away for everybody else’s common gold pants. The little gutties looked really good back then, even if they still could never win the big one, reinforcing their legacy as Bridesmaid U, forever.

    • We agree on something! I was at that game as a pre-teen. Norman Dow and the 14-7 upset and then the poor decision to send SC to the Rose Bowl instead of the Bruins. We probably don’t agree on that part. I also went to the Rose Bowl with my Trojan uncle and saw Bob Griese and Purdue beat SC.

      • Ya, I think a 51-0 loser to ND had no right being in the Rose Bowl. Your real problem was Beban. Due to his bad ankle, he was not expected to be ready for the Rose Bowl. Some think that’s why USC got the nod, but maybe it was because USC got snubbed in ’64 in favor of Oregon St., when Prothro was their coach. Everyone gets the lump of coal sooner or later.

      • Funny, I never see ucla get beat at the Rose Bowl because they never get to play in the game. For some reason, they can’t seem to ever win the conference. And in the old days when they infrequently got to the game, the little gutties usually lost.

        • Got to show a little balance here, Jack. Back in the day before I was exposed to the nasty SUCLA ways, I rooted for them in its great victories for its 1965 and 1975 teams over No. 1s in the Rose Bowl. I think too the 1984 team with Neuweasel beat an average Illinois team

          • Good clarification, JW. Jack has been around a long time and apparently is going back further. 66 Rose Bowl beat Mich. State. 76 Rose Bowl beat Ohio State. In the 80’s UCLA beat Michigan, Illinois and Iowa for 5 wins in a row. We lost 2 games to Wisconsin and were not competitive in the conference after the last Wisconsin loss. But, Jack likes to remind us of the glorious past, so let him enjoy it.

    • I still prefer the tan pants; tan provides a nice visual contrast with Bruin Blue.

      • Please divulge what so-called “bruin blue” is. Can’t wait to hear this. I’ve seen at least 50 shades of it over the years and it sure isn’t what Beban wore, even though “Prothro blue” was much better than what the little gutties wear now. In fact, little gutty blue has been through more skin changes than an old rattler.

        • For a Staunch Klownster, you do know quite a bit about Bruin Blue.

Tan goes best with any color blue value the Bruins chose to wear.

          • If that were true, why did the little gutties drop tan pants in the ’60’s? Are you just stupid or were you trying to copy all the other teams with gold pants?

  2. Norman Dow off the bench = this game and the loss the following week is what placed McKay into his own self-imposed isolation as he pondered if he was still able to be triumphant when it most mattered especially against Tommy Prothro and Ara Parseghian.

The loss to Purdue (Bob Griese) a mere 5+ weeks later (13-14) further ground McKay to prepare for the following year which he did and that magical 1967 NC.

Regardless of the preceding ‘following year’ this was a great victory hard fought by Prothro and UCLA but it also would lead to Tommy vacating before the 1970 season for the Rams.

  3. The most infamous run by Winslow was when SC led in 1965,
16-6 with 4 minutes to go, and instead of handing it off to Garrett he just had to run it himself, fumbled, SUCLA got the ball and scored 2 tds to win the game.

That is what I remember Winslow for.
