USC Morning Buzz: Trojans Need To Be Like Spartans

MICH.STATE

Besides his rant last week on how quarterbacks do not need take snaps under center at the NFL combine, Steve Sarkisian talked to Tim Brando about how much he admired senior leadership at Michigan State  . . .  basketball.

“I think about Michigan State basketball,” Sarkisian said. “Those teams they have, those senior leaders they have. It’s one thing to have young players, which we’re going to have, but when you have veteran leadership, it goes a long, long way.”

Sounds like a challenge to Cody Kessler, Antwaun Woods, Soma Vainuku, etc.

  1. sounds like staying in school to finish your commitment to the school, the program and your team…there are rewards in life that matter more than instant self centered gratification…aka…money, seniors used to dominate teams, that is another reason they had frosh teams…less injuries…

  2. Come don’t you all know any problem you know is because of the “unfair sanctions” When in doubt blame it on the sanctions!

  3. Scott, do you disagree about Sark’s statement and the value of veteran leaderships? Or do you just enjoy speculating at the hidden meaning behind things people say?

    • Clearly Scottie enjoys twisting the words of USC sports to fit his agenda. Now if a coach at another school had said the same thing then Scottie would have lambasted USC for not hiring him.

  4. It is great to see senior athletes who stay for their committment, graduate, and move on either in sports or other professions instead of grabbing as much money as they can immediately. It seems our society needs more givers and less takers.

    • Kind of like Scottie’s commitment to remain at the DN as a beat writer, spurning offers from the LAT and popular sports TV stations. Resisting the offers of Big Money to remain loyal to the art of journalism. But maybe the world can afford one more taker…

    • Why is it that we only talk about the player’s commitment? It’s a free market economy and many people in all fields move on for a better opportunity. Sark thought USC was a better opportunity than Washington and made the move. Football players have short careers and can lose millions because of an injury. The biggest problem is that many of them get bad advice and leave when they should stay. Leonard Williams is not a taker because he left early. He will be very well paid accepting a job making a lot of money doing what he loves. Good for him.

  5. Sark’s right – not only does it build team chemistry but the odds of getting to the pros and staying there for more than a few seasons are long at best – a degree is valuable forever.

If the NBA and NFL would adopt what MLB has – if you decline to stand for the amateur draft upon leaving high school or your 18th birthday you can’t stand for it for two more years.

    • A bigger problem in the NBA, Comrade. In the NFL, you have to be 3 years graduated from high school. Also, with all due respect, Sark is no Tom Izzo. Tom Izzo is one of the top 5 or 6 basketball coaches in the country, maybe higher.

      • Tom Izzo is a great coach, but he’s been at it for 20 years….In his first two years, his teams went 16-16 and 17-12, but his teams have shown improvement and his formula for success clearly works…….Sark is entering his 7th year as head coach, and his system hasn’t been fully implemented yet….but I agree, at this stage, Sark is no Izzo….and neither is Mora…

        • Both are true…Izzo is exceptional. I also think that in light of Sark’s marital situation, he may not be the best messenger to discuss commitment! Timing is everything. Kind of like Bill Clinton when he supported the Defense of Marriage Act.

          • I’ve known many couples committed to bad marriages. In the end by sticking it out, it often ends up worse for all involved, including the kids, who just wish their parents would move on. Leaving a bad marriage or poor partner is often much smarter than staying committed to a pile of crap.

          • You sound experienced. She dumped you like an expired credit card didn’t she. What really sticks in your craw Stinky is you had no clue.

I can see now, you come home from your job at Mickey’s Auto repair in Bell, and find your N. Long Beach apt empty, save for your 1:150 scale replica Hubris Hall, a 3′ plastic Tommy Trojan statue, and your priceless collection of Emperor Garrett’s Klown U pep rally speeches.

No wonder you’re so bitter. Your wife was too smart to stay committed to a pile of Krap.

          • Wow, you get angry much? Seek help Troll. I really do feel sorry for you. You should reach out to some other little gutties. On this board we only pity you. Sad.

          • I agree with all of that. I am just saying he is not the right guy at the right time to deliver the message. Today’s players have just as much right to leave school as he did to move from UW to USC.

          • It’s his job to deliver that exact message. Doesn’t matter whether he’s single, divorced, married or separated. He’s paid big to produce major results and senior leadership always helps.

And this isn’t about players’ rights to leave. USC loses more players early than most and it rarely matters how they are advised. They go if they want (often to their own peril) and Sark’s marital status has not and will not have a thing to do with their decisions.

You think Sark’s supposed to be quiet because he’s getting a divorce? If you really believe that, you’re as dumb as uclaownszilch, and that’s saying a lot.

          • In fairness to Sark, he didn’t discuss commitment or complain about. I stand corrected. Senior leadership will take some time for SC and may be more of a function of depth. It was in the comments of other posts on here talking about loyalty. I simply don’t believe that a kid leaving early is showing disloyalty. I don’t think that recent Masters Champion Jordan Spieth leaving the Univ. of Texas early was disloyal. He was and is pursuing his dream much like Leonard Williams.

          • PARODY: Bill Clinton’s Wife Condemns ‘Scourge Of Sexual Assault’ In First Big Speech.

        • Both are true…Izzo is exceptional. I also think that in light of Sark’s marital situation, he may not be the best messenger to discuss commitment! Timing is everything. Kind of like Bill Clinton when he supported the Defense of Marriage Act.

  6. What I find interesting is Klown U’s FB HC thinks about any other University team but his own. I thought SUCC (according to most Klownsters) was the ultimate role model. And now it turns out Sark thinks Mich. St. has a better model. Who knew.

This begs the question: Will Sark impose the Boston College offense scheme on the SUCC FB program?
