It’s Not Southern Cal

Jack Del Rio repeatedly referred to USC as “Southern Cal” yesterday. You would think he was from Florida instead of Heyward, Calif. Imagine if he had gotten the head-coaching job 18 months ago. The fans would be driven crazy by the Southern Cal references.

  1. Who initiated the “it’s not Southern Cal” disclosure in the media guide? Should be removed, it’s dumb – I don’t the “fans” care, I sure don’t – Southern Cal is awesome!

  2. I am sure had he been hired it would have been USC, unless Wolf was around, then it would have been Southern Cal, just to piss him off.

    • Yes the fool on plays on.Yet SW probably is using this gig to get a job with TMZ sports…Although the phrase he has a face for radio may not work for he has a voice suited to print… TMZ is his future

    • I’m sure that the fine people of Hayward are insulted by Scott’s “innocent” mistake…..he must have been thinking about Craig “Iron head” Heyward. …

        • Honestly, I don’t…..all I remember is that, at 280 lbs, he was a bruising back, like Earl Campbell, and he died way too young, at the age of 39 years old, of cancer……

  3. Breaking news – Daily News/Daily Breeze reporter Phil Collin…..

Sports Arena to be re-built by 2017 as the home of the LAFC MLS home field – seating capacity 25K. Est. cost $150 million. announcement tomorrow

  4. Personally, I don’t get this whole “Southern Cal” thing. I don’t see how it is an insult. Now calling Scotty a journalist could be an insult to a real one.

    • I believe it came into fashion to separate ‘USC’ from South Carolina due to those below the Mason-Dixon Line assuming the latter. I know whereof I speak as I phoned a sports line when I was in Charleston for my 1sdt year of college and when requesting updates on west coast scores they had a problem figuring out which ‘USC’ I meant.

      • I went to high school in the Midwest. When I told people I was going to USC, they would usually look confused and say “South Carolina?”

  5. oh, i can TESTIFY, wolfman, SOUTHERN CAL drives the DUMMIES CRAZY!!!!!!

but now, since the rampant disrespect has actually caused MORE people to call them that, they are now giving up on DEMANDING it, HAWR-HAWR!!!!

but DON’T take MY word for it…..let’s refer to the SOUTHERN CAL website!!!!! i found this to be MOST INSTRUCTIVE (and revealing):

The alternate name “Southern Cal” frequently appears in
sports-related news articles. USC discourages use of “Southern Cal” out of concern the name might suggest a foundational association to the University of California, Berkeley
(commonly known as “Cal” in the athletics context), even though the two institutions have no affiliation other than their Pac-12 membership. For several years, USC’s media guides
contained the following request: “Note to the media: In editorial
references to athletic teams of the University of Southern California, the following are preferred: USC, Southern California, So. California, Troy and Trojans for men’s or women’s teams, and Women of Troy for women’s teams. PLEASE do not use Southern Cal (it’s like calling San Francisco ‘Frisco’ or North Carolina ‘North Car.’). The usage of ‘Southern Cal’ on licensed apparel and merchandise is limited in scope and necessary to protect federal trademark rights.”

So, DUMMIES, the phrase “PLEASE do not use SOUTHERN CAL” seems to be at odds with your claims that it don’t matter!!!!!!

    • They should throw in the towel with that effort, waste of energy – please find out which regime started that, I need to know

    • If you can find out who started that waste of energy effort, I will buy you a kielbasa and a beer at the big game this year

    • Say hey, if there is a possible insult of USC, ol’ Ugly Bucket will find it and work it death.

He is a lovely human being, is he not?

  6. You’re probably the only one who cares, Scottie. Southern Cal is completely fine. Sounds good.

    • There’s even the “SoCal Spell-out” – PR really needs to reconsider

  7. “Jack Del Rio called em southern cal? I’ma call em southern cal” Get over it! Most everyone around the country knows USC as University of South Carolina! The regional private school is known as southern cal… For God sake, Keith Jackson, the authority of authorities of college football called them southern cal during his broadcasts!

  8. I think the Southern Cal thing sprung from Mike Garrett not liking the term (“It’s like calling San Francisco, Frisco”) hence Tim Tessalone expressed Garrett’s desire that USC not be called Southern Cal in the football media guide. Anyway, that’s my take. Garrett, the little dictator, got a bug up his fanny about it, and made a non-issue an issue.

You can cal me Jack or you can call me Ray or you can call me a Southern Cal grad. Southern Cal is fine and I’ve personally never heard an SC fan rag on it, probably because 99% of fans simply say SC or USC.

Wolfie’s way off here. He’s like a little kid trying to cause trouble.
