USC Picture Of The Day

WILLIE.BROWN.1963I’ve run many pictures of the 1963 Rose Bowl, an amazing game to those who watched it, as No. 1 USC defeated No. 2 Wisconsin, 42-37 to win the national championship. But this is the first photo I’ve run in in color.

And since we tend to think Adoree Jackson invented two-way play, let’s ponder what Willie Brown (26) did in the game: He had 108 yards receiving, returned kickoffs 41-and-31 yards and made perhaps the key play of the game with an interception in the end zone. USC wide receiver Hal Bedsole, who is in the College Football Hall of Fame and caught two touchdown passes in the game, told me Brown was the Trojans’ MVP that day.

That’s guard Pete Lubisich making the block in the center of the picture.

  1. “….since we tend to think Adoree Jackson invented two-way play.”???……..Who are “we”, Scott?…….

      • He was talking to Millennials like you who think the world began the day you were born.

        • Baby Boomer here boy. Dad was a a WW II combat vet. He taught me to respect women and call out punks like you who harass and stalk them. You should be ashamed of the way you stalk Helen. Your father fault with you.

    • Adoree invented the whiff block – that’s a blocking technique that involves crow hopping out of the way of opponent tacklers.

  2. Wolfie, you are simply beyond dumb. Willie Brown was my first Trojan football hero and yes, I did watch the 1963 Rose Bowl live, something you of course didn’t do.

None of us think Adoree Jackson invented two-way play. Are you really this stupid? You’re as bad as the Trolls, maybe worse, except for a few of them.

    • I was not at the game, but I watched it on t.v. with my dad, and that is a treasured memory.

What I recall most was how the game went long, and the lights were not very good, and it became pretty dark on the field

I also remember feeling cocky with the score 42-14, and then Vanderkelen kept coming, and coming, and coming. I believe he would have pulled that game out if there had been a few extra minutes.

      • So this “coulda, woulda shoulda” thing goes waayyyy back? That helps explain some things. I noticed you mentioned you mentioned “DAD” and used the word “COCKY” and the words “coming, coming, coming”. Did Daddy abuse you? No mention of “MOMMY”??? Daddy was your hero, wasn’t he?. Did you hate your mother? Did daddy bully her?
Helps explain your demeaning/sexist attitude toward women.
        sorry John….

      • For one of the few times Walnut you speak the truth. I also watched the game on TV and Klown U lucked out that time expired.

  3. All this time I thought the bruin trolls were the only ones who went both ways…….

    • Hey, Juan.. I have a little Trojan Fact for you:

One year after winning the NCAA singles championship in men’s tennis, USC’s Rafael Osuna claimed the 1963 U.S. Open singles title and became the first Mexican player to earn the world’s No. 1 ranking!……Viva Rafael …..

        • His nickname was “El Pelón”, like Scott’s……he was very young when he died…. Osuna was one of 79 people killed in the crash of Mexicana Flight 704 on June 4, 1969. He was only 30 years old….

      • Wan recently announced gleefully he wasn’t Mexican.

So Wan which is it are you or aren’t you?

        • I could care less about Juan’s nationality, or yours, for that matter…..If I made an incorrect assumption, based on a screen name, then I apologize….but it still doesn’t take away from the accomplishments of Rafael Osuna……

        • Great guess, but, despite his name, he wasn’t technically Mexican…….he was actually born in Los Angeles…..He was the World No. 1 tennis player for an all time record eight years from 1952 to 1960… still a very good guess, nonetheless……

  5. What an athletic family…all 3 brothers played professional sports. One brother, Ollie “downtown” Brown (who played for the Giants, Phillies and was the 1st Padre taken in the expansion draft) recently passed away. Ollie and his wife are my next door neighbors.

  6. Willie Brown, one of the best all around players;I watched him when he played for L.B.Poly,I think he avg about 15yds/carry…he left the Moore Lg in the dust, and at SC he was an ever present threat with Ben Wilson at f/b and Beathard/Nelson q/b’s…that was a great game to be at…Wisconsin never gave up…thanks for the great picture…
