USC Picture Of The Day

USC.BASEBALL.1972With the baseball team in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005, here’s a picture of the 1972 team, which was part of five straight NCAA title teams from 1970-75. USC won six out of seven titles from 1968-74.

  1. Nice.

But that is like SUCLA romancing the thought of winning basketball titles in the 60s and 70s, almost a half century ago.

History (sports, that is) is for rocking-chair memories. Memories of course are o.k., but nothing beats the pants off the present.

    • I agree – our victory in 1998 is no different than the one they won in 1995 (Mens BB). Winning is everything – just ask how Notre Dame feels facing their 27th year w.o. a title in football. Last line in “Patton” ‘….all glory is fleeting!’

    • I was attending USC when the Trojans won the baseball championship single every year and USC fielded the great ’72 football team. Great memories are pretty cool, actually, and we’re lucky to have ’em because the present will never be as good.

Truth is, neither ucla nor USC will ever be as dominant as they both used to be in basketball and baseball. Never. Not even close. They were both so out of control in those sports in the ’60s and 70s, it was ridiculous.

Now, either would take one simple NC in the next 10 years and be happy. So face it, the present for either the Trojans or the bruins doesn’t stand a chance of living up to the past in hoops and on the diamond. That’s reality.

      • However, as we all know, Ugly bought the 10 championships with Johnny Cheetin’ Wooden. So to say that ugly was out of control, yes you are correct but in a different light. They wrote the book on cheating.

  2. Wow, Wolfie, you actually reported something about USC, Not Pete Carroll, not UGLY, and not some other random factiod. I guess a broken clock is right twice a day!!

  3. It is amazing at the drop off of our Track and Field as well as Baseball programs after approximately 1974 when Title IX started to really kick in.
